This is a slow (and I mean slooowwww) burn, character driven mystery.
For me the best thing about this book is how realistic the characters are. Their actions and dialog are genuine and relatable. I enjoyed learning about all the townsfolk, both 12 years ago and at present time. It provided a lot of murder suspects and a lot of red herrings. Tons of fun!

Anyways, I highly recommend this fantastic, atmospheric book!

ย Great review! I loved her book, The Dry. Her writing is amazing. A lot of older homes in NZ have separate kitchen and dining/living areas so there are doors between. More modern homes are open plan. I imagine it's the same in Aus. I love the door between my kitchen and living area so when I cook highly fragranced foods the smells stay in the kitchen.

Thanks Michael!! I hope to one day see a kitchen with a door!! I need to be able to travel again lol

I want to read The Dry now because she impressed me so much ๐ฉโ๐ I cant wait to see your review!

It's not available in the USA.
Conspiracy!"
Haha ๐คฃ๐คฃ Like most conspiracy theories there's a perfectly rational reason behind it ๐

Thanks Jayme, I really think you'll enjoy this!

That is very interesting Claude!! I can definitely see the advantages to having a door to the kitchen but the idea is so foreign to me ๐

We lived in a 60 year old house that would be 90 years old now, and there was a full sized swinging door between the kitchen and the dining room...I thought that was weird, too.

Thanks Sandy ๐๐ Its very interesting to me to learn that so many homes actually do have a kitchen with a door lol

Thanks Marilyn, I think you'll enjoy this book ๐
And I love that you had a swinging kitchen door. It makes me think of gunslingers coming into a saloon in the Old West ๐ค

Thanks Ceecee!! I cant wait to read your review ๐

Thats awesome Oscar! I want to read her others now ๐

Thanks Pat!! ๐ Others are agreeing with you, kitchen doors were apparently a thing. I'm so used to seeing open kitchens that are the heart of a house that I cant even picture them as a closed off room ๐

Thanks Beata!! I really think you'll love it โ

Thanks Richard! I'm a fan of hers now too ๐

Thanks tons! and lol..... I've never seen a kitchen with an actual door ๐๐ Just entryways or openings.

Thanks tons Brandice! ๐ I plan to read her older books now too ๐

I was so impressed with how effortless and real her writing was ๐

That makes sense!! ๐๐

Thanks Meredith! I loved your review of it!!

I'm planning to read all of her previous books now and am mad that I didnt do so sooner! ๐

Lol! I've never seen a single kitchen door and you have two!!? I'm glad you enjoyed the book Renee. Awesome review ๐๐

Actually my kitchen had two doors too! ๐ That house is almost 100 years old now...none of our newer houses have kitchen doors.

Thank you, Farrah. Iโm pleased you enjoyed it too, Jane Harper is a wonderful writer. I hope you enjoy her other books just as much.
Kitchen doors are common in older NZ houses.

Hopefully one day I'll be lucky enough to visit NZ. Then I'll admire the sea and beaches but also look for a house that has a kitchen with a door lol

I guess I'll just have to take a holiday in NZ and see for myself since I'm adding 'see a kitchen door' to my bucket list ๐

I can show you around my place when you get here... you will flip out! Because I actually have THREE doors leading to the kitchen. ๐ฑ One in the hallway, one leading outside, and one is a sliding door which can block the kitchen off from the lounge. ๐
These doors stay open all the time btw, except for the one leading outside. Itโs not my official front door though.... I guess I have two of those.
I have too many doors. ๐

Without air conditioning, which many Aussie farms don't enjoy (or didn't until recently), it keeps the heat in the kitchen instead of adding to the burden in the rest of the house. It probably goes back to older times where the kitchen was actually in a separate, partly attached building, for fire reasons as suggested above.
