really liked it

4 bright and shining โญ for my first Jane Harper novel!!

This is a slow (and I mean slooowwww) burn, character driven mystery.

For me the best thing about this book is how realistic the characters are. Their actions and dialog are genuine and relatable. I enjoyed learning about all the townsfolk, both 12 years ago and at present time. It provided a lot of murder suspects and a lot of red herrings. Tons of fun!

Here is a strange (to me) quote

I have ๐™ฃ๐™š๐™ซ๐™š๐™ง seen a kitchen with a door leading to it! Is it an Australian thing? I'm so curious lol

Anyways, I highly recommend this fantastic, atmospheric book!

Michael David (on hiatus) Fantastic review, Farrah! Iโ€™ve seen the kitchen with a door in the U.S., but in older homes. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Christina I so agree, she is an amazing writer. I read all her books blurb unseen! Wonderful review. Still in the midst of my audiobook of this one.

Aristotle How did you get the book?
It's not available in the USA.
Conspiracy!

Jayme Terrific review! This will be my first Jane Harper as well! Coming up soon!

ย Great review! I loved her book, The Dry. Her writing is amazing. A lot of older homes in NZ have separate kitchen and dining/living areas so there are doors between. More modern homes are open plan. I imagine it's the same in Aus. I love the door between my kitchen and living area so when I cook highly fragranced foods the smells stay in the kitchen.

Farrah Michael wrote: "Fantastic review, Farrah! Iโ€™ve seen the kitchen with a door in the U.S., but in older homes. ๐Ÿ˜‚"

Thanks Michael!! I hope to one day see a kitchen with a door!! I need to be able to travel again lol

I want to read The Dry now because she impressed me so much ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ I cant wait to see your review!

Haha ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ Like most conspiracy theories there's a perfectly rational reason behind it ๐Ÿ˜‰

That is very interesting Claude!! I can definitely see the advantages to having a door to the kitchen but the idea is so foreign to me ๐Ÿ˜„

Sandysbookaday I can't wait to read this. Great review. A lot of older homes had separate kitchens, with doors leading to them off the hall. โค๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ“šโ˜•๐Ÿฅฎ

MarilynW I'm so looking forward to this one...thanks for the review, Farrah!

We lived in a 60 year old house that would be 90 years old now, and there was a full sized swinging door between the kitchen and the dining room...I thought that was weird, too.

Ceecee Great review Farrah- looking forward to reading this one!

Oscar I'm thinking of making this my first Harper novel too! Good review!

Pat Great review Farrah, Iโ€™m glad you enjoyed and I hope to read it eventually. I think kitchen doors are a feature of older homes.

Thanks Sandy ๐Ÿ™‚๐Ÿ™‚ Its very interesting to me to learn that so many homes actually do have a kitchen with a door lol

Thanks Marilyn, I think you'll enjoy this book ๐Ÿ™‚
And I love that you had a swinging kitchen door. It makes me think of gunslingers coming into a saloon in the Old West ๐Ÿค

Thanks Pat!! ๐Ÿ’ž Others are agreeing with you, kitchen doors were apparently a thing. I'm so used to seeing open kitchens that are the heart of a house that I cant even picture them as a closed off room ๐Ÿ˜‚

Beata Grand review, Farrah :)) Have high hopes for this book as I did enjoy Ms Harper's previous ones :)

Richard (on hiatus) Great review Farrah ....... love Jane Harperโ€™s writing :)

preoccupiedbybooks Great review Farrah! I haven't read this author, but think I should! How do you get into your kitchen, if there's no door?!

Brandice Iโ€™ve only read The Lost Man by JH so far but really liked it! Glad you enjoyed this one Farrah, great review! :)

Kremena Koleva Yes, I definitely agree with heaven - Jane Harper knows how to write and keep the reader interested. Through her books, I became acquainted with the Australian style of prose.

Bonnie In very old houses doors or even hallways blocked off kitchen so if fire in kitchen whole house didnโ€™t go with it

Actually my kitchen had two doors too! ๐Ÿ˜ That house is almost 100 years old now...none of our newer houses have kitchen doors.

Thank you, Farrah. Iโ€™m pleased you enjoyed it too, Jane Harper is a wonderful writer. I hope you enjoy her other books just as much.

Kitchen doors are common in older NZ houses.

Hopefully one day I'll be lucky enough to visit NZ. Then I'll admire the sea and beaches but also look for a house that has a kitchen with a door lol

I can show you around my place when you get here... you will flip out! Because I actually have THREE doors leading to the kitchen. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ One in the hallway, one leading outside, and one is a sliding door which can block the kitchen off from the lounge. ๐Ÿ˜‚
These doors stay open all the time btw, except for the one leading outside. Itโ€™s not my official front door though.... I guess I have two of those.
I have too many doors. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Sharron Omg. Kitchens and doors!! My parents had a old federation style home. There were 3 doors that opened into the kitchen. ๐Ÿ˜€

PattyMacDotComma Glad you enjoyed one of my favourite Aussie authors, Farrah. Yes, I had 3 doors into our farmhouse kitchen, and my husband grew up in NZ with a 2-door kitchen. It means you can keep one room in the house warm (my mother-in-law was a fantastic cook in a very cold house).

Without air conditioning, which many Aussie farms don't enjoy (or didn't until recently), it keeps the heat in the kitchen instead of adding to the burden in the rest of the house. It probably goes back to older times where the kitchen was actually in a separate, partly attached building, for fire reasons as suggested above.
