This was pretty lovely.

At times, it was very lovely. My very favorite things are lovely things, and simple, wonderful magical realism is my favorite hard-to-find-done-well genre, and for a while it seemed like this could qualify as being both of those things.

But then...a severe damper arrives. My parade is rained on. Stormy weather comin' in. Insert other precipitation metaphors.

Unfortunately, I have to tuck away the thing that threatened to ruin it all in little ol' spoiler tags:
(view spoiler) It’s just not my cup of tea.

Or should I say coffee???

(Buh dum ch.)

Bottom line: This was almost very good, and then it wasn't, for me. But it was still good.

currently-reading updates

don't mind me, just adding more and more books to my currently reading because all of my library loans are coming in at once and making me into a juggler except with books.

so an even dorkier juggler.

The Smol Moth I checked out eight books at the start of December and proceeded to read only two of them. i'm a reading legend

so what I'm trying to say is, I feel you

±ô¾±³ú˳✧àϸ I have 20 overdue books that I’m panicking over and scrambling to read now. Past Mya overestimated herself

Erin Kercher Can wait to see your review of this! I loved it

lily That’s the most stressful time of the yearrrr. Currently sitting on 11 books from the library so I feel your juggle.

Oh wow. This book looks interesting!
Are they e-books? Does your app have the option to "deliver later"? I have a gazillion books on hold. When one comes up that I know I won't be able to read yet I ask them to deliver it later. I can specify between 7 and over 100 days later.

they are!! and they do have that option but i'm incredibly stubborn and also competitive with myself

How do you reply with the fancy italics? I'm sure there's a button somewhere I'm missing.
Anyway. I had nothing important to add. I just bust out laughing in public at your "but I'm incredibly stubborn and also competitive with myself." =D =D

Neo sits at the furthest table, quietly reading a book, giving the impression that fortune had passed him by

Eden I am the same way! I just finished finals and I am now studying for my GRE with 7 library books on my bedside table. Why do I do this to myself?!

I am confused why you hate what was in the spoiler tags so much. Like that is just life and I don't understand how it is offensive or anything. It is just a book and part of the story line and everything. And that is just a thing that happens in life

jackie absolutely adored the premise, but definitely agree with you on the portrayal of women - some male authors just write women in such a way that screams it’s written from a male perspective

s.penkevich Yeaaaa that final chapter was awful. I was raising my eyebrow at all the emotional labor stuff along the way but that part just put me over.

¸é²¹±ô³Ü³¦²¹ê§‚ Yes, the final chapter ruined it for me too!

message 27: by Grace Ann (new)

Grace Ann Yes to everything but especially yes to being a book juggler thanks to library loans all coming the same day 😂

you're deleted, but in case anyone else has this question: i think the way it was covered was gross. just one girl's opinion

bookworms of many talents

Austyn Could not agree more. I actually didn't realize this was written by a man until like page four and then I *knew*. The ending really ruined the book for me. I like my books without the dash of pro-birth nonsense.

message 34: by Sam (new) - rated it 3 stars

Sam I agree with your review so much. I was loving the book until the last story.

Shruti Same here. Felt like an okayish book until the last chapter. It absolutely enraged me.

habibaaa Yes I agree.I feel like the final chapter was rushed.

Kezia Ratna omg you put the words on why i'm so uncomfortable with the last story.

Sadie Downing Exactly how I felt about this book!!

Harlow Reading reviews. . .

Thinking about adding it to my WTR/TBR. A NYPL patron I met on a library walking tour had just started it.

message 46: by Vanessa (new) - added it

Vanessa Thank you for writing this review! I was about a quarter of the way into this book and not particularly liking it myself. But I don't mind spoilers and yours helped me know I absolutely do not want to read further. Or, if I did, I'd stop before the last story at least. That's definitely not something I want to read as a new mother with very strong opinions on women's health and rights in pregnancy.

message 47: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Idk if you’ve heard of it, but I think you’d really enjoy this one The Light of Eternal Springs

Kristy (bunnybooktok) Swift I totally agree. My personal feelings as a woman aside (and yes it did upset me to see pregnancy portrayed that way, and it felt obvious that this was a male author), I didn’t find it remotely convincing that they would all just resign themselves to Kei’s death. Doctors in the first world in the 21st century would explain the risks but they’d have her in bed in a hospital, then they’d do a C-section at the earliest safe moment. Heart patients can give birth this way, I thought?

Adriana Slijp What books are your top in the 'wonderful magical realism' genre

message 50: by Claire (new) - added it

Claire Aimée Gulliver Oh my goodness thank you so much I had NO idea. I am a new mom who had a rough pregnancy and am so triggered by this stuff. I find it awful how often death in childbirth or pregnancy is used as a plot device. It makes the whole process so terrifying.
