Gone Girl

Gone Girl has lived up to the hype that's been going on around it.
I've been putting off writing this review for a few weeks now. So much of the story is a spoiler, almost everything that I could talk about in this book would ruin something, and I think books should be enjoyed being unfolded at the pace the author has created and not be ruined by book reviewers who feel obligated to give book reports.
I'm just not sure what to really say about the book except that it is really good, that it is a lot of fun, that it is nice and dark and a mindfuck.
It is like a Kjaerstad-lite (only in that the scope is smaller and it's not roughly 1500 pages long to get to the end of the mystery), sans the magical penis.
A guy goes out on the morning of his wedding anniversary and he gets a call from a neighbor that his front door is wide open and his cat is wandering around on the stoop. He comes home to find signs of a struggle and his wife gone. The novel starts with the story being told in two voices, the husband's from the morning when he finds his wife gone and the resulting police investigation; and in alternating chapters from the wife's diary that starts when she and he met.
The pacing of the book is great, the relatively slow-reveal of the plot was right-on. Don't read this spoiler if you haven't read the book. Seriously. (view spoiler)
I don't know what to write. You know you want to give this a shot if you haven't because it's one of those books that everyone seems to be reading or you don't because you don't want to read the books that everyone seems to be reading, but this one is worth the hype surrounding it. It's not great literature but it is a great story with some very memorable characters.
