I think its based in romance. Just because it isn't all happy doesn't mean it isn't romance.

Not every love story has to be sunshine and rainbows, there are different kinds of romance books out there, some are just more realistic and heavier like this one.

lol honestly, I can’t even lie.. booktok did make me expect that this would be another one of those YA novels about falling in love & crying because they live happily after all their trials. So I think booktok is just very misleading with this one. It definitely is a lot heavier & in the end, there are a lot of good & helpful messages that can help people who have been in this situation.

definitely did not say this wasn’t realistic. i recognize that the relationships in the book reflect the situations that many women are going through. however, the marketing of a book that is literally centred on an abusive relationship as a romance is what perpetuates harmful notions of what a relationship should be. especially considering the fact that booktok’s audience are mainly teenagers, im sure you can see why it would be harmful.

So is a romance? Yes

Oh it's definitely romance just not with who you expect it to be. The real romance of this book was with Atlas.
