Hehehehe! man, there's this guy Brian who did an incredible series of updike reviews. he either left goodreads or pulled me off his friends list, but they're well worth looking up.

Happened to notice this today, from the Widows of Eastwick:

Is all his sex writing that bad? It's got me in fits of giggles.

Yeah, makes me chuckle as well. Check Roth out for some more moments as well. I have to say, there is a very fine line between eroticism and smuttiness and I think both Updike and Roth often slip on to the wrong side.

That's from 'The Anatomy Lesson' by Philip Roth. (Didn't want to use the actual words but you get the idea). It really amazes me what some of these acclaimed writers can get away with putting down in the novels. I suppose they're just trying to be 'powerful' but yeah, gets a bit much sometimes. Sometimes I think the author just needs a cold shower and a lie down.

Having just read the review Paul directs us too, I have to say, if guys are like that, I want a very long stick in hand when I'm near by.

At first when seeing this review my brain resisted its truth- one year on I think I'm ready to return to Angstrom!

I didn't like the second one that much, but the third and fourth are brilliant...

On reconsideration, you and Heraclitus are right!

I thought it was an acknowledged fact that the author of The N-word of the Narcissus was a racist.

By the way, when we were at a restaurant in Marseille last year, I was amused to notice that they had a dessert named after it. (All the desserts had literary names, in fact). The French are so politically incorrect.

Wasn't that N-word character a symbol of resistance to colonialist coercion? A thorn in the foot of the other N-word in the title, Western Narcissism, Egotism and cultural arrogance?

I must re-read it, though unfamiliarity is no bar to an imperious opinion!

I always hoped Updike would keep writing Rabbit books and borrow the titles of some of the Biggles books he hadn't already used. He left a real hiatus. Woody Allen's take on sex and death involved too much guilt, and I'm damned if I'll put on a dress and call myself Dolores just to get laid.
