Despair. That's what I felt after reading this book. The kind of despair that suffocates you, that makes you want to break things, or, at the very least, go out for a run so you can let out the agony bubbling inside you.

It's ironic, but Never Let Me Go is about three friends who are destined to let go of everything - their bodies, their dreams, their lives and the people they love. And there's NOTHING they can do to avoid that fate.

I hate what this book did to me. I hate the author for creating a semblance of hope, only to completely crush it later.

And that means I hate this book for all the right reasons.

“I keep thinking about this river somewhere, with the water moving really fast. And these two people in the water, trying to hold onto each other, holding on as hard as they can, but in the end it's just too much. The current's too strong. They've got to let go, drift apart. That's how it is with us. It's a shame, Kath, because we've loved each other all our lives. But in the end, we can't stay together forever.

Nandakishore Mridula This book affected me, too. Beautifully evocative writing. Have you read The Remains of the Day?

No...but I intend to read it asap. I've heard it's even better than this one.

Samadrita Whoa I missed this excellent review earlier.

It's more of a ramble than a review, Samadrita, but thanks! I love this book! You should read it soon. Which reminds me, I've still not read The Remains of the Day, even after promising Nandakishore sir that I'd do it "asap" :P

Samadrita TRotD is excellent. Possibly Ishiguro's best. Do read it. :)

Tiffany Completely agree with your review/ramble! I couldn't have said it better. :)

Roger "And that means I hate this book for all the right reasons." I'll second that.

Shelley Minden It's how I feel, I rushed it back to the library to get it out of my house. I see it as too hurtful and cruel to the reader. I don't think despair helps us to become better people, and it's not what I'm seeking out in my life, so I'm not going to read more books by this author.

Paula Love your review—that quote in the end wraps it up exquisitely. I second it all.

Marialyce Incredibly sad...

Caitlin Robert This is exactly how I felt at the end. The paragraph about the river gutted me.

Carolina Cadenazzi I've just finished reading the book and I couldn't agree more with your review!

anisah aisyah the way i relate to this review so much. and that particular quote!

Rhea Fox Yes, it’s a vile book. I guess I’d the point of art is to make you feel, then it did. It made me feel gross and many years later I can never forget it’s vileness.

message 20: by Cozy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cozy THIS right here. Describes exactly how I feel.

Hilda or Loli Exactly how i feel right now. I’m just at a loss for words

Regina Featherstone Your review sums up how I feel ie a deep sadness and despair I can’t really put into words. I have read some reviews where people have said this book is boring and after finishing it, I wish it was boring rather than elongated resignation of these characters and the acceptance of their fate.

Franklin Herman This is exactly how I felt after reading this book. Even up to the last few pages, I kept hoping that Kath would extricate herself from the nightmare, created by the author. I didn’t get much sleep that night after I finished the book as it left me in such a disturbed state.
And therefore I too, give you five stars.

Rachel That quote hit me so hard while reading this book 💔

Waleed Khan I am soo glad someone said it... The Books still is on my shelf, I can't even look at it

annanas ❁ I relate to this so much. I finished it yesterday, and I still can't stop thinking about it.

message 27: by í (new) - rated it 3 stars

í Díaz I wanted to feel this but I just don’t. The book didn’t hit me somehow. I was expecting something more
