did not like it

This author doesn't have a clue about what Mormonism is about or how women are treated in the LDS church. Her "writing" sets Mormon women in the same stereotype as fundamental LDS women or even worse. Please see the following for further clarification:

My gripe with this is that people who know nothing about the LDS Church read this book they will get a very skewed and incorrect viewpoint about the LDS Church and LDS women.

BuffyBuggie I am in no way trying to start and argument. *eep* I am LDS and still active in the church. & I actually believe it gives and accurate portrayal of SOME Mormon homes and churches. I've seen LDS men, who are suppose to be head of the household and their wives be their partner, completely disregard their women and their female children. I've seen LDS parents kick their children out of their homes for not following the very strict guidelines set by the Church, I've personally experienced a Bishop (who my sister and I knew for our entire lives) tell a family member she "asked for it," in regards to rape. It's not all sunshine and daisies, %100 of the time. That is not to say all LDS men are chauvinistic pigs and that the church is horrible, but there are places and people that are like that.

Angela I think it was more common fifty years ago. Not saying nothing like this could ever happen today, but it's extreme and far from the norm.

I'm sure there are Christian homes that take the what Paul says about women always covering their heads and being submissive to their husbands literally as well, but how do you think the Christian community would have reacted had she made this story about a family of Evangelicals?

Evan I don't think she was necessarily trying to portray mormonism as this way. I think she was really trying to say, even the most devout Christians can be bad.

Joanne Even if you don't think she was necessarily trying to portray Mormonism as this way, I still maintain that people who know nothing about the LDS Church read this book they will get a very skewed and incorrect viewpoint about the LDS Church and LDS women.

Mia Lobato It's a book. Get over it. All religions have bad parts about them and if you can't handle it then you should read her books.

Joanne I got over in 2008, when I read it. However, inaccuracy bothers me, even when it is in a book.

Allison In all religions, there is always going to be at least one person who decides to take it too far. Definitely Pattyn's father.

Nikki B Joanne, it's just a "story". No one will generalize that extremely and assume all mormons act this way. Hopkins could have chosen any religious group to portray and the result could have the same outcome you're arguing. It's not all about YOU and the LDS. What goes on in this book happens everywhere, everyday, no matter the social/religious group. People are fucked up and disgusting, even if they are Mormon, evangelical, or atheist. If you think the LDS community is exempt you're blind.

Jane Corona it's FICTION
plus she's not saying its all like that just Payttns household
just saying

Joanne But all readers are unfortunately not as discerning as you ladies and may generalize based on this book.

Starla I just finished this book today. I can honestly say that I know nothing about Mormons or the LDS church. Reading this book didn't make or persuade me to think that all Mormons are like what they are portrayed in this book. I think the point was that no matter background or beliefs that violence, temptation, and any sort of abuse can happen.

Donna Rogers I have family in the Mormon church and I found it to be pretty accurate, at least in the stake where my family is.

Elisabeth Reilley I've been a member. I think she nailed it right on.

Yvonne Day I am a covert to the Church. I had one Bishop that actually told me that women had no place writing. (I was drafting a YA LDS story at the time.) I pointed out authors like Sherri Dew and other members that had been published.

That is not to say that all our Bishop's are that way.

I like the fact that this is a non member putting us out there and I believe that if this makes someone curious, then they will investigate and learn about the Church and not go by what is here.

mushroom "this doesn't match my personal experience so it's 100% inaccurate"
