really liked it
bookshelves: greece, contemporary

Rachel Cusk’s intense analysis of the phases women often go through, her keen observations of the Greek landscape, and her discussion of story writing are encapsulated by some fantastic writing. There are a lot of themes Cusk tackles that could be laborious reading, but her smooth as glass writing is the glue that holds these stories together. I’m looking forward to #2 in this trilogy.

Barbara K I’ve seen references to this book many times, but none that prompted me to add it to my TBR until yours, Judith. Well done on the review.

Jenna ❤ ❀ ❤ I realise that's supposed to be water on the cover but now I'll always see it as glass, from your "smooth as glass writing" -- an excellent description, btw.

Candi I enjoyed this too, Judith! Great review!

Her writing is to be admired, Barbara.

Cusk has some skills!

It was heady stuff!

Violeta Judith, I liked your thoughts much more than the book - perhaps her writing was TOO smooth for me, to the point that it made me feel that there just wasn't enough substance. The landscape descriptions were great though, I give her that.

Delighted to see you have a greek shelf, off to see what lies there :)
Marvellous review!!

Beata Glad you found both great themes and writing combined, Judith :))

I think the themes in this book were cathartic for Cusk. They weren’t necessarily for me at this time. The 4 stars are purely for her writing, the structure of the novel, and the one very funny scene of her student who was afraid of what was in the pastry box:)

Thanks, Beata. Her themes will appeal to some more than others and not all of her thoughts were important to me. It sounds like the second in the trilogy is more relatable.

Mark Porton "Smooth as glass wirting" indeed Judith - nice review. Do you think the themes in this book particularly apply to women? I also read that on a book blurb somewhere - I think it can apply to both sexes. Thoughts?

Honestly, Mark, I can’t recall the precise points she was making. As I look back it seems to me this was a women trying to discover who she was and having a re-awakening at this point of her life? I do recall her writing was very polished along with the setting.
