Rachel Cusk’s intense analysis of the phases women often go through, her keen observations of the Greek landscape, and her discussion of story writing are encapsulated by some fantastic writing. There are a lot of themes Cusk tackles that could be laborious reading, but her smooth as glass writing is the glue that holds these stories together. I’m looking forward to #2 in this trilogy.

Her writing is to be admired, Barbara.

Cusk has some skills!

Delighted to see you have a greek shelf, off to see what lies there :)
Marvellous review!!

I think the themes in this book were cathartic for Cusk. They weren’t necessarily for me at this time. The 4 stars are purely for her writing, the structure of the novel, and the one very funny scene of her student who was afraid of what was in the pastry box:)

Thanks, Beata. Her themes will appeal to some more than others and not all of her thoughts were important to me. It sounds like the second in the trilogy is more relatable.

Honestly, Mark, I can’t recall the precise points she was making. As I look back it seems to me this was a women trying to discover who she was and having a re-awakening at this point of her life? I do recall her writing was very polished along with the setting.
