3.5 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

“I can sense your need. Feel it. Taste it. You’re drowning in it. His eyes slammed shut. “I’m fucking drowning in it. A sharp dart of desire sliced through me.

“Then drown with me.

A Light in the Flame picks up where we left off in A Shadow in the Ember and despite loving the first book and giving it a 5⭐️ rating, I think the series started to lose its magic for me especially after TWOTQ.

Reminder: this review reflects my own reading experience and remember that readers will always have different experiences when it comes to reading a book. Quotes used in this review are out of context.

I had high hopes for ALITF because I immediately fell in love with Sera and Nyktos in ASITE and devoured that book in one sitting.

I think JLA conjured an intriguing fantastical world and that was one of my favorite elements about this series, but there are limits to how much world-building the series would continue to need. It can be overwhelming and hard to digest.

I had different expectations to how Sera and Nyktos's relationship would develop in the sequel but I was hoping the miscommunication between them wouldn't have been as present and that what mainly bothered me. Here it seemed they kept going through the same cycle at times.

The side characters always manage to provide the comic relief needed and it's always such joy to have our baby drakens around. I wish they were around more or played bigger roles in the story.

I did feel for Sera's despair and hopelessness and I loved that Nyktos was there most of the time to support her through this especially when her anxiety attacks strike. Sera's vulnerable side is more transparent not only to the readers but also the characters—and the anguish she feels is so acute because this is someone who lived her entire life as a weapon to be honed for one purpose only, and then realize she's not only a weapon but also a vessel whose death is inevitable. It's devastating for someone whose choice is always taken away and not considered. I think some readers might be bothered by Sera's edge softening a bit but for me I'm glad JLA did not shy away from showing that side of Sera and it doesn't take away from her charm as a heroine. It doesn't make her weak or boring.

This is something I truly miss about Poppy.

I'm glad that Sera and Nyktos maintain their individuality because that's the issue I had with Casteel's characterization being almost non-existent in TWOTQ and dependent on Poppy. Sera and Nyktos's arcs were balanced even though there was more focus on Sera's but that makes sense for the plot.

My heart does hurt for both of them. Their love story is somewhat tragic for two individuals who are not even familiar with the concept of love.

I just know that most readers, like me, ate up the spicy scenes between Sera and Nyktos. They were not only hot but also emotional and the tension just makes it more delicious.

“Fuck, Nyktos growled, his breath hot against my cheek. “You will be the death of me.

Also, my other issue with this book is that it seemed the plot was going in circles sometimes and unlike book one, this was more repetitive. And similar to the world-building issue, I'm trying to word this correctly, but there shouldn't be as many new reveals especially as we're heading towards the end of Flesh and Fire and Blood and Ash series because I'm trying to connect the dots and I'm struggling.

But in terms of which series is faring better, I definitely think Flesh and Fire is winning readers over Blood and Ash. I think it would have been better if the two series were seperate and not interconnected.

On another note, I too wish Nektas smiled whenever my name was mentioned.

It's release day! Let's see if this book will win me over after TWOTQ. I'll be reading it on the weekend but to everyone starting today: happy reading!

Here for my favorite draken dilf: Nektas 🐉

It sucks that the spin off is dependent on the main series though because I can't stomach FBAA after TWOTQ. Sorry for the rant but let's continue."

Lucie V. Draken dilf indeed! 😏

KateR. Really just hoping it connects some of the dots from the way TWOTQ ended! 🤞🏻

Tayah Young-Corniffe Hell yea!! 🐉🥵

Kaliah I have the book nowww and I can't wait to read it. Have to finishing reading what I'm reading now and then I'll read it :)

Niki Finished reading last night and I totally agree about the plot going in circles. I’m definitely struggling with connecting the dots and keeping up with all the changing definitions in the lore.

✩ Yaz ✩ @Niki yes! We already have a lot of unique fantastical elements but having more introduced in the lore is just overwhelming. It's hard to memorize all of it.

Carmen Thanks for your review. I finishe yesterday and enjoyed reading a lot. However, I agree with you that parts are repetitive. In sum, it felt as if the story was extended and extended in the first 75% of the book to finally reveal certain aspects not in this book but probably in the next. However, I particularly loved all dialogues between Sera and Ash opening up to one another and all pages with draken 💕

✩ Yaz ✩ @Carmen I am definitely enjoying the dynamic between Sera and Ash more than Poppy and Casteel at this point. I hope the miscommunication trope fades in the future especially at this stage. I think the story felt stagnant at times because we spent a lot of time in one location (unlike book 1).

Iremide Thanks for the review. I finished the book yesterday and I don’t understand the ending. The first half of the book was just repetition and it was tiring at some point. I’m more confused now than before I started this book and I’m struggling to understand the ending 🥴

Kanyin Ogunrinde I agree with your review. I still love the characters but it felt slow in some parts earlier on in the book prob due to repetition. I 100% agree on the new lore/new world building being too much almost. That new part of the prophecy was like wut? Not sure what it added to the plot and the overall prophecy itself is hard to read lol maybe I’m just a dumb dumb 😅

booksbymina I think I would enjoy Nyktos and Sera’s story more if I wasn't so disappointed in TWOTQ. It kind of ruined it for me. But I'm also just annoyed with something new being added or something being changed in every book. It's so confusing, like this whole new prophecy now (like really 🤦‍♀ again we have new things added. I‘m just tired.

Also thank you for your honest review. I feel like most of these reviews are from her ARC readers and I just don't trust them anymore after TWOTQ because not all of them are honest reviews!

Lilou82 Just finished and I thought too it was going on circles at time and repetitive. What I don't understand is why Nyktos didn't take the embers. Yes sera would have die but since he would have become the primal of life, he could have resuscitate her... So why all the fuss?

Samantha Leigh ♡ @lilou82 I had the SAME exact thoughts. like just bring her back?!?

Lilou82 @samanthaLeigh I'm glad I'm not the only one to wonder about that! But since English is not my first language, I wondered if I had missed something... So plothole?

.*•. ☾ sephia ☾ .•*. I agree that in twotq we didn’t really see Casteel as a character or developed as he was all about Poppy and it got boring after a while. And I do miss Poppy’s more vulnerable naive side I agree!

message 16: by Hope (new) - rated it 5 stars

Hope Griffin Diaz Is there supposed to be a book three? I thought two and done. It didn't seem to end.

Danielle She needs a better editor. It's giving money grab with how stretched and repetitive the story was for the first 75%. After ASITE I am so utterly disappointed. I have to disagree about the character dev I really feel like Sera took a step back in maturity here.

message 18: by Raven Wolfe (new)

Raven Wolfe Reads I was super pissed about ASITE because it was blood and ash recycled. I came to the ratings to see if this book was worth picking up. Your review convinced me to skip this one.

Funmilayo I agree with you. *spoilersahead* I finished this book and was like. Wait, we’re still on the same prophecy 🙄. Also, I felt like I enjoyed the 1st half of the book better than the last half. I still don’t understand why Nykos was more willing to let Sera hate him and change the whole dynamic of their relationship, than to tell her that Veses was extorting him. And why he kept saying he was worthy of her when he knew he didn’t do anything wrong. That part didn’t make a lick of sense to me.
Also, as someone mentioned above, why not drain her, let her die and bring her back to life as the Primal of life. I guess that’s how she’ll end up ending the story in book 3🤷🏽‍♀

Emilie Agreed with all points. Now I just want a Nektas novella. 😂

Luz zorzi Can somebody pls tell me if this spin-off is really worth reading? Because I read all the other books from Blood and Ash and got HIGHLY disappointed with the joining/threesome and all that. Can somebody please tell me if this couple is actually monogamous and will stay the way it's presented? I don't want to read it and later get disappointed again like with FBAA :(
