is that a test on my friend request? 😄
Its a little hard to explain why... I loved Ryle and I felt sorry for him that he struggled so damn hard with his control (as far as I remember). I would've wished Lily & Ryle could've found a way to overcome his issues. With therapy maybe. But I was never in her shoes. Experiencing domestic abuse and watch your own mother suffer from it. So it's maybe easy for me to say she should've fought harder for her marriage and the man she loved. Isn't this what romance is about? And maybe I just didn't like Atlas very well. So I will def. not read It Starts with Us

hm, i must say i strongly disagree. "it ends with us" is intended to manipulate the reader into falling for ryle, and then forgiving him for the things that he does consciously and purposefully. the "control issues" is what is used to disguise his malintent. just a reminder that ryle
1: begged lily for sex and coerced her into it
2: raped lily with the excuse of wanting to "show he how much he loved her" as a fucking apology
3: traumatised her. he only cared about the fact that his abuse was unnacceptable when it was applied to his child; someone he seems to care much more about than lily. (and we see this often, for example, when men only care about women's rights and safety when it affects their mothers/sisters rather than girlfriends etc.)
4: atlas was fine. he was there for lily when she needed it so i can't really bring myself to dislike him, but to each their own on that particular opinion.
also, briefly, in this book we see the cycle of domestic abuse and certain commonalities. like, when lily gets hit the 3rd or 4th time, she's more willing to forgive the abuser and even be grateful, that the hit was less strong or less bad than the first. i think it wouldve been benificial for colleen to have included a chapter that clarifies all these things because unfortunately, i feel this book is often misinterpreted.

wow. you just blew my mind.
I can see why you stated that this book just is not a romance. And you are right. I obviously couldn't see all the things that were wrong when I read it 4 years ago. Maybe I should read it again to see the story with new eyes. So thank you that you took your time to tell me your thoughts.
