Hey, I have a booktube channel (youtube for book reviews) and I do video reviews for books like this one, epic fantasy, science fiction, media related to them, and more.

I tried really hard, but wow this book was boring. I think it reminded me way too much of The Historian, which was the biggest waste of 900+ pages I've ever read. I think it's because I've done way too much academic research in my 20 years of schooling to ever find it remotely entertaining.

I think the part where the witches, vampires, demons, etc. do yoga together pretty much killed it for me.

(Okay, it's probably more of a calm indifference, but had I wasted any more time this would be more fitting.)

Mark Lawrence interesting! when PoT was discounted in the UK and got towards the top of the fantasy board only A Game of Thrones stopped it being #1 but much of the time this book pushed it down to #3 - I did wonder what it was like.

Abigail Haha, I can't believe you read it. I've heard from a few people that have read it and they were so excited for the topic but it was a struggle for them to make it through the book.

seak My step-father loves this series, but I couldn't take it. Harvard scholar/witch meets up with fellow Harvard scholar/professor/vampire. Lots of feelings, melodrama. Boredom. Snooze.

mark monday I think the part where the witches, vampires, demons, etc. do yoga together pretty much killed it for me.

same here.

Hah! I just thought that was so strange. I literally laughed out loud and not for a good reason. :)

mark monday i could not believe what i was reading. bizarre and funny but not in a good way. like seeing a doctor wearing flip flops and then he turns around and you see he's also in blackface. i have no idea where that analogy just came from.

message 7: by seak (new) - rated it 1 star

seak Haha, I had to look it up, but that totally works. :D

Kat Hooper Gosh, Bryce. You should have asked me. I could have saved you a lot of time! :)

Doh! I really gotta get with it. I check Fantasylit all the time too! What was I thinking? :)

Lee Reading this and considering I gave The Historian one star, I shall not be adding this to me TBR

Yes, saved yourself $25 and 25 hours.

Buffy Armstrong I feel the same way about this book. I wanted to like it, but I finished only 250 pages. I just couldn't take the two of them anymore.

Glad I'm not the only one. Sometimes I think maybe it's just me, like I didn't get what everyone else is getting, but I don't think that's happened here. :)

message 15: by Lee (new)

Lee This got me thinking about time and money wasted on The Historian, but then I realised that it wasn't too bad.
I picked it up for $2 at the Op Shop, it was my 'by the side of bed' book, (for nearly 6months) after a chapter I'd be so bored I'd put it down and go to sleep.

message 16: by seak (new) - rated it 1 star

seak Still paid way too much in both money and time!

message 17: by Lee (new)

Lee LOL, but then look at the benefits. It meant I got to have this fun discussion AND because of the reference i'll never read A discovery of Witches.
Maybe I should have a 'never agree to read' shelf in case I forget this discussion.

message 18: by seak (new) - rated it 1 star

seak That's a great idea, I'll have to implement that myself.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon I had to like this review for this line, if nothing else:

"I think it reminded me way too much of The Historian, which was the biggest waste of 900+ pages I've ever read. "

I so agree.

Think I'll definitely be passing on this one.

seak Glad to be of help. :)

isn't that the truth!? That's when you just knew it couldn't get any more dumb.

seak Carol wrote: "isn't that the truth!? That's when you just knew it couldn't get any more dumb."

That's exactly it! It was just like, I can't take this anymore, this got way too dumb. I tried to move on, but they kept referring back to it.

MillerBee yep the yoga did me in too, but the constant snippets of wine were right up there, boring -boring book.

You know what they say, great minds... :)

Pemberley Linden The yoga bit pretty much did me in too!

seak Pemberley wrote: "The yoga bit pretty much did me in too!"

Wasn't it just so hard to take it seriously anymore? I couldn't, just couldn't.

message 28: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn Haha, this review gave me a laugh!

message 29: by Kelly (new) - added it

Kelly I tried to read it, but didn't get very far in. The protagonist just kept wandering around to the library and working out. And if there's vampire yoga later, evidently that doesn't stop.

message 30: by Sarah (new) - rated it 1 star

Sarah Oh wow, I can't believe how I just saw my thoughts in this review.

message 31: by Charity (new)

Charity Haven't read this but -- total agreement on The Historian. What a mind-numbingly boring read.

Jenny (Reading Envy) I liked the Historian, but it was more the way the story was told that kept me interested. I wish I'd read it after reading Dracula. As far as this book, I'm still giggling about yoga....

Nicole "stupid" sums up a lot of what happened in this book.

Nicole A lot of wizard/vamp/daemon yoga talk, but can we talk about the pages upon pages of horseback riding and rowing for a minute? How do you make that much description of two of the most boring sports interesting? Don't ask Deborah Harkness...she's doesn't know either.

Jody Mena I liked the academia of it. But the whole yoga thing was indeed a bit too much deus ex machina, I stopped taking it seriously after that, but it was still pretty entertaining, even if it wasn't exactly a master piece.

message 36: by Lina (new) - rated it 1 star

Lina I have yet to finish it but this is exactly how I'm feeling. It's long and boring.

Diane C. Yes, Historian I couldn't even make past the first chapter. This one so far is kind of better. We'll see.

seak Diane C. wrote: "Yes, Historian I couldn't even make past the first chapter. This one so far is kind of better. We'll see."

You are much more perceptive than I. Well played. :)

message 39: by Sarah (new)

Sarah I was going to read this but I was also very bored with The Historian, so - no, I won't waste my time...

Candy Tiley Oddly, I liked "The Historian" better than this book.

♣ Spacey♣ Your gif made my day. I haven't read the book but it seems that sums up what a lot of reviewers have said.

message 42: by Rideaux (new)

Rideaux Wow! What a coincidence! I started "the historian" and could not finish it, same with this book LOL! It has some really great reviews maybe I should give it another chance at some point, after I've read several other books that are high on my list.

message 43: by seak (new) - rated it 1 star

seak Tamara wrote: "Wow! What a coincidence! I started "the historian" and could not finish it, same with this book LOL! It has some really great reviews maybe I should give it another chance at some point, after I've..."

There's way too much good stuff out there for this one to ever climb high enough. :)

Tammie Yes exactly! I said some of the same things in my review. It reminded me of the Historian too. So boring. And the yoga scene. I couldn't take it seriously after that.

message 45: by seak (new) - rated it 1 star

seak Hahaha right! So boring. Great to hear I'm not alone! Also, hopefully you didn't waste too much time

Tammie Oh I did. I ended up reading the whole book because it was for a book club I was in.

Francesca Finally someone else who thought it was boring!!
