despite that weird author hand placement thing i've been seriously obsessing over all these author photos of morrison's huge lion's head on the back of the her books--i look for some external indication of all the furious demented & psychotic shit on the inside but by all appearances she's a lovely woman. it's gotten to the point where i've gotta stick duct tape over the author photo so that everytime i read some crazyass shit and my OCD flares up i can't flip to the back cover to stare some more.

again with the hands.

Ademption I've similarly wondered why she isn't batshit crazy looking. The wear and tear of excess should appear on her face like the lines of the faces of Burroughs, Will Self, and Martin Amis. But she is a lioness in dreadlocks. Her work has surreal nuttiness that eclipses the work of these gentlemen, and yet also manages to soar above the ghetto of self-conscious experimentalism.

Though in the first pic, if her eyes were shaded a solid color (dark red, black, white) that would be more representative of the voice I know from her novels.

yup.

creepy and evil.

Jessica I heard an interview with her in which she basically said she's a fabulous reader of people..what she does is just look at their eyes..so if there's a photo, she covers up everything else to focus on and read the person's eyes.
Perhaps you should do the same with her, brian...

brian i find that the more people claim to be good readers of people, the worse they actually are! but in her case, i'm pretty certain it's true. i think toni morrison should've been the new judge on American Idol rather than kara whatshername...

and that'd be even worse jessica! those soul-piercing eyes staring me down through the whole reading experience? shit, i might as well be one of those hollywood movie serial killers and paste cut-outs of her eyes all over my bedroom!
(you do know, of course, that david did that with my eyes. sicko.)

Matthieu You watch American Idol, Brian? My sympathies.

brian greatest show on television, my friend.

message 7: by Matthieu (new)

Matthieu Haha, I was kidding. I've been known to watch a few episodes now and again...

message 8: by David (new)

David Tool Academy is the best show on television, hands down.

brian haven't heard of it.
what is it?

message 10: by Kristine (new)

Kristine Best Toni Morrison thread evah!

I've only seen clips of Tool Academy on The Soup. I believe it's a reality show where they try to refine "Tools" as in jerks.

message 11: by Noran (new)

Noran Miss Pumkin oh, David i am so with you on the Tool show. Celebrity being kicked to the curb was rich-proving he was a huge tool! Still cannot believe the guy the switched girls is still in the house. Can't wait for the reunion show all ready. As for Brain, great review with pics, never read her stuff, not my cup of tea, but your review is cool and thoughtful.

message 13: by Jessica (new)

message 14: by Noran (new)

Noran Miss Pumkin I am NOT calling him a tool in any sense!!!!! I was just discussing the show, that no one watches at work-that is all-just excited to share it with someone!
He is my friend, and i would not do that to him ever! You mihgt, but i am a lady! :)

message 19: by Matt (new)

Matt Huh...never noticed this before, but I think her hair once had a distinguished career of its own in the mid-90's...

guiltlessreader oh this thread is waaay too funny!

Rebecca Scaglione Came across this review while reading Sula (Kindle version so no fear of hands here!) and just thought it was awesome!

Muthu Indian What a review - red herring, positively useless, distracting and a waste of time.

brian you are such a cutie, ether!

Ademption In "Public Speaking" (Martin Scorsese's documentary and ode to Fran Lebowitz, a Warhol-era anti-writer writer), Morrison interviews Lebowitz and seems rather awkward about hand placement in a few scenes. Maybe Morrison doesn't know what to do with her hands when being photographed or her body language is naturally a bit awkward.

cardulelia carduelis She's gorgeous!

message 26: by Sam (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sam this review should be deleted or at least dropped way down. imagine the only thing one can say about this novel being some asinine joke about the author's picture. i know it is almost 10 years old, but to still have it up after all this time is embarrassing.

message 27: by Ademption (last edited Nov 08, 2018 06:36AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ademption I thought it was a keen, but minor social observation about hand placement that I could not subsequently unsee. That wasn't his only point, Brian from a decade ago also said:

and as i plow through her body of work i stare at her face for some external indication of all the furious demented & psychotic shit she flings at us. by all appearances she's a lovely woman. & i just don't get it.

While that was a general statement, it resounded strongly with what I felt when I read her work. I found it genuinely surprising that her books were full of experimentalism and horror. Interviews and pictures of her telegraph none of this.

I don't understand why you are embarrassed. Why are you embarrassed?
