This book threw me for a loop. I had no idea what I was reading. It plopped me down in some magical town and expected me to make sense of it all. The town is separate from all other civilization. Young mothers suffer from an “affliction which causes them to disappear. No one knows why it happens. Did the mother love her children too much? Too little? Were there signs that others should have noticed? Once the mother disappears, others in the village remove every trace of her. Pictures are burned, belongings are carted off to be sold.
The story is told from the perspective of Vera. Starting as a young girl when her own mother disappears, through to her own motherhood.
There’s a definite otherworldly feel to this, a fairy tale sort of story. I kept expecting the story to begin to make sense. I wanted answers, not just about the disappearances but also, what’s the deal with the silver pins? Everyone else loved this inventive, speculative story. But I just never connected with it.
My thanks to Celadon Books for a paper ARC of this story.

And everyone else seems to love it. I kept asking myself what I was missing.

Liz, I know how you feel, but sometimes you just don’t like what you don’t like. Strange, Speculative, Fantasy books really aren’t my thing exactly for the reason you state. You have to guess what is happening. Some more then others. I understand many love these, but I usually don’t. Your review is definitely keeping me away.

My feelings about this mirrored how I felt about Lincoln in the Bardo. Too dreamy and lacking a coherent plot.

I need to recognize fantasy and I aren’t a good match.

Thanks Pat.

Thanks ladies.

I’ll be curious to see your thoughts. I am in the minority. It seems to be almost universally loved.

Thanks Marilyn. Obviously, we’re both too pragmatic for this book.

I didn’t read the first one.

Glad we were of like minds.
