Well I’m not really finished with this book. I got to 40% and i am wiped out.
I’m done.. no enthusiasm to pick this up anymore, and I am so disappointed because when I saw that this author had a new book, I was very excited. I’m a huge fan of Cutting For Stone!
So, this was way too tedious and I just didn’t care about anyone but Big Amachi.. who in the beginning was married off at 12 yrs old too a much older widower with a young son.. this man ended up being a strong..big.. gentle giant and I only cared about them. My three stars are because of having their story in the book.
It went off in other directions .. many other characters and situations and SO MUCH detail..
I can’t go on
Don’t let me deter you.. there are many 5 star ratings!

Thanks to Netgalley and Grove Atlantic, Grove Press for the ARC!

It’s hard because I know we both had high expectations.

Susan Oh no! I saw the author and since Cutting for Stone is one of my favorite books I thought this had to be a sure thing. But maybe not?!? Oh what a bummer. So sorry it was a downer. I’ll have to sit on this for awhile.

Give it a try though it might br one for you :)

Antoinette Better to quit than endure when it comes to a book. I was interested based on author, but after many negative reviews, I’m not so sure.

Linda I love your honesty, Karen. You've fallen on the grenade for many of us. I've heard the same concerns by others as well. I'll pass. :D

Ann Thank you for the heads up. I'm bitterly disappointed. "Cutting" is a favorite. It inspired me to search for information about Addis Ababa, history, present day.. Verghese is getting so much press!

Well this book may work for you, Oprah named this one her new book pick.., I just couldn’t get through it.

Barb Karen, I stayed with it but it took me over a month to read but I totally agree with you. Just 3 stars for me. Just long & tedious and weighed down with way too much extraneous, unneeded stuff. So disappointed.

Ken Sometimes it's lonely to give up a 5-star favorite. I know the feeling, having shrugged after over 100 pp. of Demon Copperhead. And now a Pulitzer to further kick a man when he's down. Oh, well. We're not reading to please others. We're reading to entertain ourselves.

Ken See? To me it was an outstanding story but like a hollow man. No soul.

Kelly I'm disappointed with myself for finishing this. I should have stopped at 40% like you did.

Yes so many books to read that I didn’t want to waste any time once I began to not enjoy it!😉

Dianne Oh, craaap……I just bought this doorstop! Was so looking forward to it, but you and Elyse not being fans is very worrying. Glad you stopped when you realized it wasn’t working for you. Hope your next book is a winner!

Terry Karen, so sorry you didn’t care for this book that I so much loved. I do think it slowed a bit in the middle, but the ending had a lot of surprise for me.

Paula K Your review is spot on, Karen. I stopped after about 10% of the book. Way too detailed and verbose. The Cutting of Stone I loved also.

Karen I understand Karen. I almost did the same, but stuck with it to the end. It was daunting. But, I agree my favorite part of the story was her story. Wonderful and fair and honest review.

You made the right decision, Karen...loving it up until you stopped. And that makes the experience perfect. Right?

message 50: by Tina (new) - rated it 4 stars

Tina I agree with you Karen. Couldn’t wait to read it having enjoyed Cutting for Stone. All the hype with Oprah, not that it influenced me though. I did finish the book, took a long time. The ending kinda brought it all together but it was too dramatic and far fetched.
