This rates possibly as my favorite novel. It has no down side. Wonderfully written, amazing characters (based on reality), and marvelously readable.
A side issue, I can at times hate preachy, self righteous, or PC books. This book carries it’s moral compass proudly and does it well. Atticus Finch, is in many ways the man I wish I was.
I love this book and could not tell you how many times I’ve read it. Don't miss this book...for whatever reason. This is THE AMERICAN NOVEL.

Read and reread this novel succeeds and needs to be recommended on so many levels that it's hard to limit anything said in specifics to a manageable size for a review. Above I simply said great, don't miss it.
From the relationship of child to child to the relationship of child to father this is a stunning read. Of course the matters of racial hate will be front and center to any reader who picks the novel up. It gives a look at the world as it was in America not so very long ago. It gives us a picture of those who actually do view all people as equals and how this inspires hostility, anger, acrimony and (as noted) hatred from the people too weak, stupid and ignorant to understand this.
Scout's experience in school reminds me a bit of the way school was when I began. I grew up on a farm and we had for a long time very little money, yet still it wasn't like the depression. This book is great on so many levels it must rank as one of the best even greatest novels of all time.
Again I recommend, don't miss it, revel in it. Take time to absorb it, experience it. Five stars + and the highest recommendation I can give.

Great review, Mike. I love Atticus Finch. One of the best characters ever written, IMHO.
I'm gonna openly admit that somewhere during my education in literature, there was a failing... this is one of those books that never made it through the void. I've added it to my to read list - I do try to through in an old classic every now and then. Both of you commenting on such a great character, is just more than I can miss! =)

You can. At the bottom of the comment is an edit tag... But I screw up that way a lot. For some reason when I'm typing quickly I tend to type "know" for "no". You'd think my brain would go the other way... Don't worry about it.
Great review, Mike. I had to read this novel in high school (Grade 9 I think), and I loved it. I liked the film with Gregory Peck too.
When I was in the 9th grade it was 1966. The book was a Pulitzer winner, but we weren't reading it in school yet. I read it about then though. Probably was more likely to read it because it wasn't required. LOL
Mike... loved this one too. Definite 5 stars. Just read it this year!
An incredible book. And Harper Lee wrote only this one book, as far as I know. It can be read and re-read and is still enjoyable.Btw, Mike, have you seen the movie with Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch? Really captures the flavor of the novel. However, the book is better as it contains more.
Yes. It's one of the few movies that gets close to the book. They leave out very little (Scout and Jem's aunt doesn't show up or the episode with Atticus' brother, several things like that, Christmas and so on). It does capture the feel.Lee actually did quite a bit of work on In Cold Blood as I understand it though she didn't get any special recognition by Truman Capote.
You are aware that Dil is based on Truman Capote who Lee knew as a child, right?
She also did some work on a follow up to TKaMb but apparently was never satisfied with it or something. I need to find a GOOD biography I guess.
I totally agree. One of the best books I ever read.
I've always said that if I was put in a corner and forced to pick one favorite novel this would be it.
Probably my favorite book of all time as well. I was startled recently when I read that many consider it to be a YA novel. Maybe that is the charm of the book, it speaks to everyone of all ages, as it speaks to the child in us and well as the man one wants to be...
I suspect that comes largely from the from the fact of a child narrator. I read it first when I was around 15 or 16 (of course in my case that is only a few years after it's publication LOL) and love it as much now as I did upon first reading.
