it was amazing

⚔️ There are so many dark currents of betrayal and intrigue swirling around our rough-edged Englishman, much of which he is unaware of, it is imperative for the reader to move ahead into Part 2 to see how he fares. At least he has some romance in his life now. Yet I fear this too will be threatened in the days and weeks ahead.

John Blackthorne needs to learn how to use his katana and not just wear it on his belt. And he may need some help from a monastery too - I’d love to see some Zen. The novel steeps you in the ways of 1600s Japan to such an extent the return to the 21st century is somewhat dismaying.

I’ve never seen the earlier made-for-version either. In fact I know next to nothing about the story. So I’m going to rectify that with a read. Then I’ll watch the film version. With my interest in the samurai I ought to have read it long ago.,"

Now there are other Japanese in play, and they are in opposition to the first Japanese we were introduced to. I guess a conflict is in the making. I wonder on which side Blackthorne will land?"

I hope, at this point, we are through with Blackthorn being put in yet another prison. No more of this plot device, please, Clavell-san. And perhaps we’ll see a lightening of lengthy monologues as well. Otherwise, a thrilling immersion into 1600s Japan."

There is a lot of criss-cross-double-cross and intrigue going on and I really can’t imagine what’s next - except an eventual romance between Blackthorne and his interpreter. Meanwhile we’ve had our first great sword battles. So when are they going to teach him to wield a katana?"

I'm still thinking about giving the new movie a try.

Murray There are so many special channels now. I have a few but I’m pretty sure the new film version isn’t on any of them.

Lorna A great review, Murray. Thanks for the reminder that I need to read this.

Murray Cheers Lorna 👋🏼 it’s a good read but the movie adds things the book should have. I’ve only watched the trailer but there you see him being trained to use the samurai sword 🗡
