The new film adaptation was, for the most part, filmed on Vancouver Island, particularly Ucluelet, and Port Moody, on the mainland. I have no intention of watching it. I’ve never seen the earlier made-for-version either. In fact I know next to nothing about the story. So I’m going to rectify that with a read. Then I’ll watch the film version. With my interest in the samurai I ought to have read it long ago.,

At least Blackthorne has chosen sides now. Or sides have been chosen for him. There is a lot of criss-cross-double-cross and intrigue going on and I really can’t imagine what’s next - except an eventual romance between Blackthorne and his interpreter. Meanwhile we’ve had our first great sword battles. So when are they going to teach him to wield a katana?

I must commend the narrator on his ability with Japanese. I only know terms and phrases related to martial arts like judo and karate, but he sounds adept. I hope, at this point, we are through with Blackthorn being put in yet another prison. No more of this plot device, please, Clavell-san. And perhaps we’ll see a lightening of lengthy monologues as well. Otherwise, a thrilling immersion into 1600s Japan.

I did find it took a while to get underway, that is, for substantial interaction between the English captives and the Japanese to occur. A very nasty beginning it was too. Now there are other Japanese in play, and they are in opposition to the first Japanese we were introduced to. I guess a conflict is in the making. I wonder on which side Blackthorne will land?
