I just can't comprehend why so many people are rating this book 5 stars. Seriously, why? I understand we are in love with Twilight, but it's not a good enough reason to support this mediocrity.

I was extremely disappointed by Breaking Dawn, but decided not to be a hater and give SM another chance. So I opened The Host. I have to say, I have never had to put this much effort into reading a book in my life. If I didn't know who SM was, I wouldn't even bother to read after page 10, it was that boring and uninspired. But because of SM, I continued on, especially after some people told me that it would get better after about 250 pages. Oh boy, were they wrong! I was more like 500 pages. It took me 3 days to get through first 100 pages (to compare, it took me probably about 3 days to read Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse). After that I just skipped through the rest of the book within a couple of hours. You can literally read every 50th page and not miss anything! There is absolutely nothing going on in this book! Pages and pages of conversations between Wanda and Melanie. And both these characters are so undeveloped, it's hard to tell them apart. In fact, it's hard to get attached to any character in this book! They all are so flat and dull.

This book is marketed as sci-fi/romance novel. Trust me, it is neither. The sci-fi backdrop of this novel is laughable. Altruistic "souls" that save planets from cruel species, among these "cruel species," believe it or not, are: Flowers, See Weeds, Bats... It is just plain ridiculous!

There is very little romance in the book either. A couple of kisses between underage girls and older guys is all you get, in spite of the fact that this is SM's "first adult novel." "Adult" conversation goes as far as discussing that a couple of characters can't have sex because she is too young (of course!) and they don't have contraceptives. Give me a break!

So many reviewers say that this book has a deep meaning, that it shows "what it means to be human" and demonstrates that we can "extend the status of "human" to other entities," etc. I think these people have never read actually good books. In fact, I don't think they have ever read anything but Twilight before.

This is definitely the end of my love affair with SM's writing. I think she struck gold with Twilight, the rest of her creations are just plain bad. You may disagree with me, but this is the reality.

Tatiana Months pre-nervy b.:) Like 8 months ago

P.S. If I can say so myself: ouch!

Heather LOL, well hilariously snarky review! It seemed as though you were sending me a message :)

Megan "You may disagree with me, but this is the reality."

LOL! Tell it like it is! =)

Tatiana Oy, I really had a problem with it, didn't I?:o)

Megan That is where SM's true talent lies ~ bringing out the anger! :)

AH Oh, I hated this book so much when I read it. At first, I was "Where's Edward?" Then I just realized that this was really boring. You know, they are planning to make this into a movie, don't you?

Tatiana I know she had enough material for 2 sequels, but hope never to seem them in print and in any case, I won't be there to read another million pages of that borefest. Same goes for the movie adaptation.

Jessica I tried reading this a while ago but failed miserably. The story almost bored me to death.
I totally agree with what you said about the Host and Breaking Dawn.

Rosanne I so agree, I actually prefer BD to this.

Tatiana I do too, Roseanne. BD had at least some entertainment value.

message 13: by Beth (new)

Beth I - can't stand SMeyer, so I'm actively avoiding this one.

message 14: by Deepa (new) - rated it 1 star

Deepa totally agree with u.i hated this book and thought there was something wrong with me when everyone else was praising it.and i love the Twilight series including BD(at least some part of it):-))

Lisa I completely agree with your review.

message 16: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Thank god I read these reviews before wasting my time on this book. I was curious about reading this because I thought since Twilight was good (just Twilight and New Moon, not the last two) I thought maybe she does well with the beginning of series and sucks at the end but now I know that it would make me mad reading about another stupid love triangle and things that don't make sense. This review is awesome, it made me laugh

message 17: by Jen (new) - rated it 2 stars

Jen I, also tried sooo hard to like this book. I am on page 250 and am not sure I can even finish it. I loved the Twilight books but this book is sooo slow and boring! Your review is right on :)

message 18: by Jen (new) - rated it 2 stars

Jen I FINALLY finished this book and I must say I enjoyed the ending and the beginning but the middle, the middle was so BORING! She could have made this book into approximately 200 pages and it would have been alright, not good but not terribly boring either. You are spot on with the no romance not too much sci-fi either.!! This, IMO, should not be considered an ADULT book.

Cristina I really don't understand why reviewers need to demonstrate their arrogance by parading their 'reading talents' and profound knowledge of what makes a good book by criticizing the intelligence of other reviewers. Get some class, review the book after you've taken a Zanex to minimize your need for name calling, and keep your dominating opinion focused on the book!

message 20: by Lola (new) - rated it 1 star

Lola tqchokobon it's the first book i'm unable to finish. it's an ode to absurdity.

message 21: by Sarah (new) - rated it 1 star

Sarah I completely agree with you, 100%.

message 22: by Amy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Amy It's hard to tell Melanie and Wanda apart?! They are basically the same person/being!!! I mean, seriously! Wanda is the soul entering the hosts body!! Soooo, they are the same!!!!

message 23: by Amy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Amy Its reality?! I thought The Host was better than Twilight! I'm 13 and I've read a lot if books in this genre and this was one of the best!!

message 24: by Jessy (new)

Jessy Wan I totally agree with you! I bought this book for $1 in a local book fair and I thought, "Meyer wrote this, so I guess it'd have to be good. Besides, the book was a NYT bestseller so I'll just give it a go." When I got back, I read the first few pages and was like WTH? The story doesn't make sense to me. I forced a couple of my friends to read it and decipher it for me, but instead of trying to make out Meyer's writing, they bashed her for writing such a crappy novel. Twilight was okay and still bearable, but this was much, much worse compared to Edward Cullen's sparkling-in-the-sun idea.

Carlee Niemeyer I agree completely. This book was so terrible

Sergio I'm totally agree with you (¡in every point!). Love you review. Saludos.

message 27: by Krystal (new)

Krystal I am glad I'm not the only one to feel the way I do about this book. I can't get past the firt 30 pages
