☁︎ ☾ 。⋆ morgan ⋆。☽ ☁︎ asdhgfjfg this seems like it's going to be like a Hallmark movie YA 2016 romance mix and I'm here for it being terribly good. Also? That cover? I love it so much!!

message 6: by Nivedita (new)

Nivedita ...
was the author trying to write a book or were they on a challenge to include all the pop culture references they could?

౨ৎ @nivedita tbh idek all ali hazelwood books are like this 😭

message 12: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Love corpse bride though but good lord that’s a LOT of references

Emma Griffioen i got annoyed at this book by just reading that list. i JUST wrote in my review of vera wong's unsolicited advice to murderers how much i hate pop culture references, when will authors learn!!

eliana_sophiaa babe you can just leave it @ that, no other thoughts necessary. will be steering clear 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀

✰⋆·˚ ༘ *lillyreads⋆·˚ ༘ *✰ i hate when books do that unless it’s taylor swift

message 24: by cayla ʚïɞ (new)

cayla ʚïɞ Not the BTS references

Jamie Perhaps you’re not the intended audience?

Milo (if lost, return to hot fictional character) the way i didn't use to hate little tidbits to the real world with references, but now i just wanna escape in a stupid romance, lemme do that without the mention of goddamn discord or riverdale :,)

message 27: by Fatima (new)

Fatima free jungkook and bts

message 28: by Grace (new) - added it

Grace Oh my god are you serious? That’s an unhealthy amount of pop culture references

message 29: by ʲٰí (new)

ʲٰí⁷ I'll read it just for the BTS and Jung Kook references xD

message 30: by len ❀ (new)

len ❀ this author doesn't learn

message 31: by M (new) - rated it 4 stars

M Yeah, authors, stop referencing relevant pop culture in your books! Especially when the characters can reasonably enjoy them! Y'all aren't cool for not liking that stuff and complaining about it.

message 32: by M (new) - rated it 4 stars

M emma griffioen! wrote: "i got annoyed at this book by just reading that list. i JUST wrote in my review of vera wong's unsolicited advice to murderers how much i hate pop culture references, when will authors learn!!"

you do realize you are not the sole audience for books, right? most people enjoy them, but if you want to be insufferable and complain anytime mainstream things are mentioned in a book I'm sure you can find other things to read.

౨ৎ @M it's fine to include them! it's just authors like ali hazelwood do it so constantly and awkwardly it's like an ad commercial within a book which makes the wide/general audience greatly dislike them - i personally have only heard ppl enjoying song references but everyone ik hates tiktok references

catastrophe (hiatus due to school) wow that's an unhealthy amount of pop culture references

tanya that... is an extremely concerning amount.

maya ⋆⭒˚。⋆ oh…that’s uhm…a lot 💀💀

message 37: by dani (new)

dani idk why ali hazelwood insists on inserting every possible ick into her books like ???

message 38: by M (new) - rated it 4 stars

M i haven't really noticed it being that prevalent in her books, to be honest, and not to this degree. and tiktok references are pretty popular in, like, everyday life so it's only natural that it bleeds into literary life too. if you don't like it, that's fine, but if you keep reading the author that you know does that it feels disingenuous when you review because you complain about things you knew were going to be there.

౨ৎ @M i mean ig we have different opinions...because if i screenshotted every reference i was doing it every other page (for this one and steminist#2) - and yes pop references are natural in all contemporaries but i just don't personally like it which is why i mentioned it. and i read this one bc i was excited to see her ya side and i like chess, not a hate read primarily!

message 40: by M (new) - rated it 4 stars

M ash ౨ৎ wrote: "@M i mean ig we have different opinions...because if i screenshotted every reference i was doing it every other page (for this one and steminist#2) - and yes pop references are natural in all conte..."

well yeah if this is a YA read there are going to be a lot more pop culture references because of the demographic it's geared toward lol like maybe you aren't the target audience if this is YA and she's putting in references the YA audience would get and like. because in her other books i've read there haven't been that many pop culture references. i never said it was a hate read, but if you're reading something in a younger genre, you're going to get younger references. and you not liking it isn't the author "not getting it" it's the author catering to an audience you aren't in.

౨ৎ @M lol i am young..? the author is Trying to cater but imo a few more beta reads (by young ppl) would be better served. as the primary audience (and even on online platforms of teens) many of us do hate these pop references when Done Badly.

message 42: by andrik loves (new)

✨ andrik loves radu dracul ✨ SCALP MASSAGE ASMR??? gurl references need to have limits and this has surpassed them

Shelby P This is the worst book I’ve ever read

message 44: by Mya (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mya Dahlen I didn’t think the pop culture references were overdone, she writes it so much better than other authors do

Regina when she inserted the mean girls "she doesn't even go here" ..

maddie!! and bill nye fanfiction!!

Teala Lue Seriously though, why do I have to look up all these references to make sense of what she’s saying? And I’m not even halfway through yet

message 49: by Avery (new)

Avery I don’t mind references but this is just yikes. It’s definitely giving millennial trying to relate to gen-z. Will not be reading this one lmao

message 50: by M (new) - rated it 4 stars

M the references were not that prevalent or obnoxious and matched the ages of the characters tbh esp the younger tween/teen sisters
