bookshelves: read-in-2012

I was a bit afraid of reading this book even though it had been sitting on my shelves for years, because I adored De Niro's 1994 movie adaptation and I didn't want to be disappointed by the novel.

I shouldn't have worried, as the movie is a faithful account of Mary Shelley's story and I enjoyed every page of the book as much as I enjoyed the movie.

Everybody knows about Frankenstein, but most people regard it as a horror story, whereas I think it's kind of a philosophical novel. The idea of preserving life, of recovering those long dead, the thrill and power of playing God and give life, all this issues are considered in Victor's character.

And then, one of the dilemmas of all times: are we born evil or are we corrupted by society?

Victor's creature becomes a vile monster, but what if somebody might have taken the pains to try to understand and accept him instead of being appalled by his hideous appearance?

In the end, a sad story beautifully told and with many subjects which can bring reflection long after the novel is finished.
Good quality reading.

Warwick Ah, so the De Niro film sticks quite close to the book, does it? That's good to know, I may try and check it out.

Yes, it does. I remember watching Frankenstein and "The Crow" (the film that killed Brandon Lee) on that same year. Both great productions. Gosh, I might be in the mood for a revival one of these days...
