liked it

Dear Max Porter,

I read your first novel, Grief Is the Thing with Feathers and really liked it. So I was eager to read your second book, Lanny, which unfortunately fell flat for me. Finding myself in an English bookstore in The Hague. I picked up your latest book, Shy. Your prose is eloquent, but over my head. There were too many voices other than the narrator, Shy’s competing in such a short book, left me feeling confused, at a loss for words, and frankly uncertain I will read more of your work. Luckily there are many who find your writing sensational, so don’t listen to me.

Sincerely,
Royce Houthuijzen

Bonnie G. Great review Royce! I have had Lanny on my tbr for years. Several IRL friends have suggested Lanny to me, but I never seem to be in the mood for it. I will read more about this, or maybe skip it. If it is above your head it is above my head. Would love to hear your Netherlands stories! Hope all the time with all the family turned out fun and not headache inducing :)

Royce Bonnie Thanks! I always struggle writing reviews about books I just don’t understand although the writing is so good. I can’t always articulate why I didn’t work for me. Writing him a letter felt like a proper way to do it, lol.
Our trip was very nice. We traveled there primarily to spend time with my mil, who suffers from (beginning stages) of dementia.
If you do want to read any Max Porter, I would recommend starting with Grief. Br warned it’s very sad and heartbreaking but it’s his one book I understand, lol.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try to remember to do that.

So sorry to hear about your MIL. That must be so hard, especially with the distance. Glad to hear you were able to spend good time with her.

Jennifer Welsh I didn’t even love Feathers, Royce. Enjoyed your expression of disappointment here, although sorry it didn’t bring you back to him.

Royce Bonnie Thanks! I am grateful we were able to spend some “quality time with her and she still recognizes us. Small but important things.

Royce Jennifer haha 😂 Thanks, Jennifer. He’s obviously brilliant. Just not for me.
