A G rated gothic thriller.
I am absolutely GOBSMACKED by the high ŷ rating for this book!
Two gothic thriller covers caught my eye this year, Diavola and My Darling Dreadful Thing. They both feature a spooky female ghost-like character in the artwork and have identical 3.87 ŷ ratings.
If you decide to read one of these two books…pick My Darling Dreadful Thing (5 ⭐️!)
What went wrong in Diavola? Pretty much everything.
There was no plot. It was not scary or creepy. The characters are all unlikeable.
It read like a travel brochure for Italy that didn’t lead anywhere.
I listened to the audiobook which was read by Andi Arndt. She does a fantastic reading, but was unable to save this book from disaster.
Somehow, I made it to the end so I will add a star.
If you really enjoyed this book, please let me know why. I don’t get it.

Thank you for saving me from reading this! So many readers find books scary or creepy, and then when I read them I can’t figure out why (of course I’m referring to other books). I’m so sorry this book didn’t work out for you and ended up being a disappointment. Great and honest review, Jayme! Hope your next read is a winner!

Great review! You definitely have my vote with your rating. I tried to read this when it was released but it was just awful, except I had to DNF it altogether because I couldn't push through it. No, just no, in my opinion as well.
Brandi, so glad it’s not just me. I really don’t understand why this book is rated so high. I actually started it a while ago and didn’t finish it and then went back to it. Wish I didn’t!

Oh no, Jayme, I'm so sorry you didn't like this! It was one of my favorites this year. I agree with you that it's not really scary, in the traditional sense. I enjoyed how Jennifer Thorne made me question what was truly horrifying: the supernatural entity or the dysfunctional family, LOL. And I didn't predict the direction the plot would go which I found refreshing. It was definitely horror lite, but I thought that made it unique and approachable for readers who would typically find the genre too scary. On to better books! :)
Thanks Cassie! I just think the book was misrepresented. All of the characters were so awful to each other it made it difficult to root for anyone! I’m glad yo found something to enjoy about it. Unfortunately, it came off as super cheesy to me.
I genuinely hate this book. The way Anna's family treats her is so appalling and there is no reason for it. Even when she goes back into the haunted house to get their belongings, they treat her like garbage. I'm only still reading it because I had it on hold for so very long.
