bookshelves: agatha-christie, mystery, audio, crime, hoopla, read-in-2022

A courtroom drama told in flashbacks, mostly through the eyes of the accused.

description

Elinor Carlisle hated Mary Gerrard.
Why?
Because the love of her (entire) life, Roddy Welman, took one look at Mary's beautiful face and broke off his engagement to her.
Ouch. My goodness, that stings.
So when her aunt dies after telling her that she wanted Mary provided for, but legally leaves everything to Elinor, what's a girl to do?
If you're Elinor, you grit your teeth, give her £2,000, and hope she hits the road.
OR!
Maybe you hand her a plate of poisoned sandwiches.

description

I'll bet you can guess what Elinor is on trial for, right?

description

Fortunately, the village doctor is in love with her, and so he begs Poirot to find evidence to prove her innocence. Now, he's personally willing to lie and doesn't really care if she offed poor Mary or not.
But Poirot does.

description

Unfortunately, every bit of evidence Poirot uncovers seems to point right back to Elinor as the most likely killer. And as a reader, Elinor's inner monologue doesn't do much to convince you one way or the other as to whether or not she did it.
But if Elinor isn't a cold blooded murderer, then who is?

description

No worries, random Goodreader.
As always, Hercule Poirot will defend the innocent and shine a light on the guilty.

description

Without giving spoilers, all I can say is that I did not see the bad guy coming. Another excellent, if not very well known, story by the Queen of Mystery.

Cindy I always liked this one. Solidly on Elinor's side here.

Sarah Such a good one, one of my favorite Christie mysteries!

This was my first time reading this one and I was very pleasantly surprised at how good it was!

Erica Once again, I applaud your stellar thematic use of gifs in this fabulous review.

Anne Well, I've almost completely used up every actually Poirot gif out there. Like, there's NONE left.
It's time to branch out!

message 7: by Erica (new)

Erica You could contact the BBC and ask them to hurry up and make new Poirots.

Anne Yes. I just need to find the number of that BBC executive I met last weekend...

Kaitlan Interesting premise. This sounds much different from other Christie novels I've read!

Anne It is! She tried out a lot more ways to tell her mysteries than I originally thought.

Rae I'm working my way through all the Poirots in order, but it truly sucks how many of them I remember the culprit for! One time they even used a Poirot story for a (Margaret Rutherford) Miss Marple episode, but I rumbled them! I wish I could have more of that "she got me!" feeling, like I had with Roger Ackroyd.

Anne Oh! They really mixed and matched with the Miss Marple episodes, didn’t they?!
I will say reading some of the lesser known stories has given me a few gotcha moments, though.

message 13: by Rae (new)

Rae They tried... but I caught them! Haha. My plan is to read everything she's ever written so surely there'll be a few tucked away that I've forgotten. I remember this one because Mary was so irritating and Roddy such a cad! Also Poirot's reaction to the paste sarnies made me giggle

Anne Mine too!! It’s harder than I thought to track them all down!
