I’m baffled! Why would Mr. Toibin leave us hanging like this? All I can say is, He’d better be planning a third book in this Eilis Lacey series!

Without a doubt, Long Island is another Colm Toibin masterpiece! The characters he invented for this series are absolutely spectacular! What a bunch of very interesting characters they are!! Although (view spoiler) Whew!😮‍ For me, that's a huge relief!!! But still, I wish Toibin would give us something—anything! And, please sir, don’t make us wait another 15 years to find out!!!🙏

Very highly recommended, with the caveat that Brooklyn is a must-read first!!

Alan (the Consulting Librarian) Teder Jodi, your hint makes it sound like this one has the makings of an Unsatisfactory Ending Alert 🫤

YES - it left us hanging on a precipice, once again!😧

Jillian You are so right about Jim and Eillis, their relationship actually frustrated the proverbial out of me. It felt too much like insta-love to me.

Jillian And don't get me started on that ending!!!!!!

message 5: by Kerry (new)

Kerry I read Brooklyn so long ago I have only the vaguest memories of the story so I hesitate about reading this. Love your review so I am tempted.

Angela M I’m hoping for another in the series , too, Jodi. Love your spoiler!

Canadian Jen I already have this on my list but man, I'm not a fan of cliffhangers either, Jodi. Maybe I will wait and see if a sequel comes out....eek! Love seeing all those stars!

Thanks Kerry! I'd encourage you to read it. I think Brooklyn will come back to you as soon as you start Long Island. It's really worth it!!

Ah, thank you, sweet Angela! I can't help venting now and then, and I hope I didn't sound too ridiculous.😟

Thanks Jen! I understand your reluctance, but if you wait for a sequel, you could be waiting a VERY long time! I read an interview with Toibin the other day where he said he hates sequels and never planned to write one. Fortunately, "the baby idea" came to him quite suddenly, and planted the seed for Long Island. He sounded extremely anti-sequel, although when asked if there might be a third book on the horizon, he said something like "Never say never". So, I really hope it happens, but somehow I doubt it ever will.😢

Seriously??? If there is never a sequel the way that the book ends is ridiculous.

message 17: by Carole (new)

Carole Excellent review, Jodi. I like cliffhangers because it becomes another book to look forward to. However there were many years between Brooklyn and Long Island. The author is not young and neither are we so he’d better start writing now.

Thanks so much, Carole! Toibin may look older but, in fact, he's only 68 (same as me)! However, I have a sinking feeling he's not going to write another sequel.😟 That would be a huge shame and would disappoint thousands of readers. I hope I'm wrong.😕

K Love your review! I 100% agree with everything you wrote! I'm a sucker for endings and they can make or break a novel for me, so I deducted a star because this was not an ending. Toibin cannot leave us hanging! Your spoiler is spot-on! I seriously thought something was wrong with me because of how I felt about Jim. :)

Thank you, K!! I'm so glad you agree with me about Jim!😂 And OMG, I really hope Toibin wrote Jim's character that way intentionally and not because he thinks that's what men are really like!!😝

Rowan MacDonald Excellent review, Jodi! I love that it was a five star read for you - I've only seen the film "Brooklyn" but it left me wanting to read the books. I hope he gives you a third one!

Thanks so much, Rowan!!😊 If you enjoyed Brooklyn, you should definitely read Long Island. The life of Eilis Lacey gets so much more interesting as she ages and matures. I'm sure you'd love it!
Yes... we're all practically desperate for another sequel!🥺
