2.5 stars
Before this one I read four novels by Louise Erdrich and loved all of them . She’s a prolific writer and there are more I want to read . Because I’ve enjoyed her writing and storytelling, I’m sorry to say I was disappointed in this one . It took way too long to connect with the characters and the story . I didn’t like any of the characters for most of the story, except Crystal. While I believed there is something important, Erdrich has to say here, I wasn’t able to see it as I waded through the daily lives of these characters.

Maybe it’s because I was preoccupied this week or maybe it was just my mood. I’m not sure , but I do know that I was not engaged as I was with other novels I loved by Erdrich such as The Night Watchman and LaRose which is one I’ll never forget. I warmed up to some of the characters, but not until close to the end . I thought Gary was just weird, but by the end felt for him . There’s a lot to dislike about Martin, Crystal’s husband until there are some revelations. I’m going to round up to three stars because of the quality of the writing, the recognition of dangers to the environment and I appreciated the ending . I just wish I had been able to engage sooner. This will absolutely not keep me from reading Erdrich’s other books. I still believe she’s a literary treasure.

I’m thankful I read this with Diane, my book buddy and I’m glad that it wasn’t just me.

I received a digital copy of this from HarperCollins through Edelweiss.

Jodi I'm so excited that Erdrich has another novel on the way!!!

Sujoya - theoverbookedbibliophile Sorry this wasn't a better read, Angela! I was looking forward to reading this one, but will adjust my expectations now. Great review! Hope your next read is more satisfying!

message 3: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Even authors don't love all their books. I have read a lot by Erdrich and have not loved them all. I enjoyed your fair review, Angela.

message 4: by Rosh (new)

Rosh Sorry it didn't click, Angela. Better luck with the next one!

Thanks , Sujoya. I hope you can connect more than I did.

Thanks, Barbara. I’m always optimistic for new books by authors I love, but I guess you’re right. We can’t love them all.

Thanks, Rosh. Me, too.

Donna Davis Great review, Angela, but oh so sad! I've requested this one; we'll see if it comes through. If I am declined, I'll let your review console me.

Angela M Donna, thanks very much for. It pained me to say I was disappointed. There aren’t a lot of reviews out there yet , so I’ll be interested in seeing where I fall .

message 12: by Julie (last edited Jul 15, 2024 06:56PM) (new)

Julie I've loved some of her novels to distraction, others I couldn't get much past the opening pages. I'm sorry this one didn't engage you, but I understand the ambivalence.

Angela M Julie, thanks for your thoughts . I always want to love everything by an author I admire as much as I do Erdrich , but I know that’s not a realistic expectation!

Phyllis Runyan A, I just won this one in a GR giveaway. My daughter is a big fan so maybe I will have her read it first.

Angela M Phyllis, I’ll be interested in her thoughts as well as yours .

message 16: by Antoinette (new)

Antoinette Sadly, every book even one by a favourite author, is not always going to be perfect. I appreciate your honest review, Angela.

Linda An honest review, Angela. Like you, I'm a hardcore fan of Louise Erdrich. Will still reach for this one. I guess even our favorites have a few novels that fly too close to the ground. It happens.

message 18: by Carmel (new)

Carmel Hanes That's disappointing for you. Hopefully your next one will be more engaging.

Lisa (NY) I was really looking forward to this novel because like you I am a big Erdrich fan. I will now temper my expectations.

message 20: by Canadian Jen (new)

Canadian Jen Oh good grief! If neither of you enjoyed it I know I won’t either. What a shame. Let’s hope her next one is stronger. Appreciate the thoughts, Angela.

Jen, who knows ? You might connect more than we did ! Thanks !

message 25: by Laysee (new)

Laysee It’s hard to enjoy a book when characters somehow fail to engage us. Thanks for an honest review, Angela.

message 26: by Jodi (new) - added it

Jodi Oh no. Yikes! I'm sorry you weren't too pleased with this one, Angela, and it's pretty likely I won't be either. But at least I found out well in advance (thank you), so there's no need to wait on pins and needles this time.😉 Your review explains WHY you weren't thrilled, and that is great!👍

message 27: by Bianca (new)

Bianca I appreciate your honesty, Angela. I'm yet to read Erdrich, I know many love her writing.

Angela M Thanks so much , Laysee !

Angela M Jodi, thanks. Either we love them or we don’t!

Angela M Thanks, Bianca. I am one who does love her writing and story telling, but just didn’t click with this one.

Jennifer ~ TarHeelReader Sorry to hear this one didn’t work out better, Angela, but, as ever, you write the most thoughtful and well-balanced reviews. I hope you enjoy your summer break. ♥️

message 32: by Sue (new)

Sue Sorry this didn’t work for you, Angela. It’s hard when a new work from an author you like just doesn’t measure up. But you certainly explained yourself well in this review.

Lisa Canadian Jen wrote: "Oh good grief! If neither of you enjoyed it I know I won’t either. What a shame. Let’s hope her next one is stronger. Appreciate the thoughts, Angela."

I'll just echo what Jen said. How disappointing!
I still have a lot of her back catalog to read, so I won't feel like I'm missing out.

message 34: by Debra (new) - added it

Debra Great review, Angela! A=Shae it wasn't more enjoyable.

message 35: by Cheri (new) - added it

Cheri An excellent and honest review, Angela. I know how much you have enjoyed her others, while I've only read a few of hers, but this one sounds disappointing.

Dorie - Cats&Books :) Great review, I love Erdrich but I'm seeing very mixed reviews on this one. I think I'll wait on this one

message 37: by Harlow (new)

Harlow Reading reviews. . .

New to me author

message 38: by Dona (new)

Dona Dinkler Isn’t a 2.5 rating really a 3 star rating? 🤔

message 39: by R L HERSKOWITZ (new)

R L HERSKOWITZ Wonderful review, Angela!
I’m sorry this book didn’t work out well for you. Hopefully, Erdrich’s next novel will be better.

message 40: by Heidi (new)

Heidi Burkhart I don’t think that readers need to apologize for a book that didn’t click. That is, after all, why we share our thoughts. If we are Pollyanna types then what is the point? Thank you for sharing your feelings and thoughts.

Lauren Z Your book reviews are always spot on and resonate with my reading soul. Thanks for making me feel better about not loving this (by page 60) and for encouraging me to still give her other great books a chance. I guess there’s a reader for this popular fiction, but it isn’t me.

Dorie - Cats&Books :) Thanks for the great honest review. I have loved previous novels but this sounds a bit like trying to address too many issues in one book!

message 43: by Lynda (new)

Lynda Archer Thank you. I hear you. And I understand the phenomenon of which you speak. I have noticed in other books I've read. I've yet to read this one of Erdrich's, but like you have valued others. And yes La Rose, will be long remembered.

Laurie Conney I appreciate your review. I’m also encouraged to know that my feelings about this book are validated by another Louise Erdrich reader. Thank you.

Susan I'm about 1/4 of the way through and feeling ambivalent about continuing, feeling much like you described.

Lacey Byrne I’ve got 90 pages to go. What am I missing here? Your review describes how I feel about this book. I do t really care about these people, except Crystal.

Marilyn Corbett Thank you. You captured my thoughts exactly.

Roland Huston I felt the same about this book. I read three other novels before this one and really enjoyed them but could never really connect with this one.

message 49: by Rainer (new)

Rainer F DNFed it for the reasons you mentioned. Life s too short to read books that don t inmerse you

message 50: by Becky (new) - added it

Becky I’m having a really hard time with this one myself and am considering abandoning it. I usually can’t put an Erdrich book down, but this one feels like a slog!
