The only incident around here is that I read this whole book. This is a very short read, and it took me forever to get through this. The choppy short sentences from eight year old Bela were painful to read, and this story was not creepy or scary to me at all! I kept waiting for something to happen, but it never did. I guess the ending is good, but if you can suffer through this to get there, then more power to you. This book is labeled as a horror novel, but I would label it as a children’s book.

There are many five star reviews for this book, and others are loving it. However, this book just didn’t work for me. I wanted to be scared, and I wasn’t at all. I would also read a few pages and doze off (which is not a good sign).

Super review, Rachel. You are right. Dozing off midread is a bad sign for a book that is supposed to be scary. 😬

I'm sorry this one wasn't amazing Rachel! Great and very thorough review! I've been wanting to read this one so now I know to keep my expectations in check. To be fair though, I do scare easily haha

Oh my! This looks so disappointing! A horror book that feels like a children's book is definitely doing something wrong. Thanks for your honest review, Rachel! As your next book, the dystopian one for the book club, is also a challenging one, I hope some great books come your way after that! ❤️

However, as you can see it didn’t do anything for me. Maybe I missed something? Either way, I don’t think my dystopian book club pick is going to get me out of my slump, although I’m hoping it does! 🤞

Is the entire book from the 8 year old perspective? That sounds like hell to read.

Well the idea of "other mother" sounds incredibly creepy but sounds like this one just didn't deliver the chills or thrills! I think I will pass based on your review!
Unfortunately several of Mr. Malerman's books just are not worth the paper they are printed on.

I loved the first sentence of your review also, Rachel! I'm sorry this book was so disappointing for you. It's funny how how so many readers can have completely different experiences with books. I couldn’t agree more! Definitely not scary and a lot of repetition in the writing. I recommend Hidden Pictures instead. I couldn’t put it down and thought this book would be the same but it took me forever to get through.
You summed it up perfectly! I can definitely see this as a movie with better dialogue . Has the potential to be so creepy. But I was like come on with what her mom and dad were telling her. And Bella herself seemed more like a four year old than an 8 year old. It also didn’t seem like it took place in 2024.
