There's nothing I dislike more than a book that's just downright boring with less than intriguing characters. Oh wait, silly me, yes there is! I can't stand this new trend of shoving shallow storylines into needless series and trying to hook the reader with an annoying cliffhanger. Not right IMHO. This book came across as an incomplete story, where there were many questions left unanswered, and done so in such a sloppy manner that they came across as plot holes. For me, this book was a mental equivalent of a migraine, sound familiar? Sorry, but that's how I felt.
The mysterious, supposedly good looking Daniel wasn't squee-worthy or engaging enough to hook me for another few books. Can't quite pinpoint it, maybe it was his hostile behavior for more than half the book that I just couldn't get over. He flipped off Luce when he first saw her? Did I read that right? Why? So contrived. He ran brrrrrr.... too cold for my taste.
I think the main issue I had with this book were the outstanding questions I have. For example, can someone please tell me what the heck these shadows, errrr wait, announcers, whatevs... What are those? What purpose do they serve? Were they there to protect or harm Luce? What's the difference between the dark and silver/grey shadows? What is up with Roland? The fires?? What caused them? How come no one cared that Todd died in the fire? What really went down the night Trevor died? What was the purpose of introducing over a dozen characters in the first three chapters when a majority didn't even play a part in the rest of the story? What are the angels/demons fighting for and why do they fight when they know neither side will ever be victorious, according to Daniel? How could finding out the truth physically kill Luce? WT?? My list can go on.
This is the second book I've read on fallen angels and maybe it's just not my cup of tea, but I didn't find the concept engaging enough to carry me through for another couple of books. But most importantly, I think regardless of this book being set up as a series, it should still be able to stand on its own and provide the reader a conclusive ending, with just enough intrigue to whet your appetite for more, not have you looking in the back cover for missing pages. Not interested in continuing with this series and I'm surprised I finished this book.

Gonna take a peak at your book shelves so see what you've read and liked recently. Happy reading!

Thanks A. I completely agree with you. I could understand infusing intrigue into a novel, but it was so sloppily done in this case I just got a headache too. I felt the same about Cam, I liked him so much more than the other characters and then the annoying plot twist occured and there was no one left for me to connect with. Good question about the angels ending up at the school. Hmmmm????
Happy reading!
arlene....

Agreed, some concepts were good, others not so much. Sorry you didn't care for the book Dorothy, I'm right there with ya. :)

How did Luce and Daniel first meet? What made them fall in love with each other?
What exactly is the point of Gabbe, Roland, Arianne and Molly? Why are they at the school? How did they get to the school? - if they're enemies then why are they there together?!?!
What happened to the angel statue? How did that fall? Who made it fall?
Mr Cole?!
Why did Miss Sophie have that sheet of paper with everyones names on it?
So was it Cam who killed Trevor? What really happened to Trevor?
Why are people out to get Luce? Why do they wanna kill her?
Etc, etc, etc...
Sorry about the question overload...I just finished the book and i've got to agree with you, definetly not going to bother with the sequel.
:)

Sorry you didn't like the book. :( And, I agree with you, as much as was left untold, I'm really not that curious to continue reading. Oh well, not all books can be hits.

Arlene, this wasn't my cup of tea either, I honestly don't know how I made it to the final page. But I do want to read Torment. Slap me.

Yeah, I have it out from the library. I think I just like writing ranting reviews on Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. But the danger is that reading this shit is making me stupider.

"
Yeah, I know what you mean, I really love writing those ^^ I don't think it's making us more stupid, these type of books definitely bring more... color... to my vocabulary ;)

Arlene, first off, I must say, I’m sorry you didn’t like Fallen and I have to agree with you when you said “This book came across as an incomplete story, where there were many questions left unanswered, but this is a series. You can’t expect all the answers to be given in one book if the book is to have a sequel. Also I have to agree that Daniel wasn’t “squee-worthy or engaging enough, but that didn’t stop me from wanting to read on. I realized I’m not going to think the same thing the author wants me think about a character. For instance I found myself liking Cam & Roland instead of Daniel and Arriane instead of Luce. I don’t think Lauren meant for that to occur, but we’re all unique and will be attracted to different things for different reasons. When I read your review I was getting the sense that you didn’t like it because of all the unanswered questions, but I can assure you, the sequel, TORMENT, answers a lot of your questions.
Daniel’s reason for his hostile behavior and him flipping her off I believe was answered in FALLEN. I can’t be sure of that since I’ve read both FALLEN & TORMENT, but the reason he did it was to separate them. He didn’t want her attracted to him. He cares deeply for her even when he flipped her off, but knew if they had a relationship (even just as friends) it could kill her. So his way of stopping her death, was by avoiding and acting like a complete ass hole. Yes, Luce is dumb for still being attracted to him after all the things he says and does to her, but, I believe, that was Lauren’s way of showing us how attracted they are to one another.
You learn more about the shadows/announcers in TORMENT. I know this for a fact. The are actually portals into the past (Luce’s past). I know you know she has past lives. Well these portals are like windows into those lives. They’re not dangerous. They are actually helpful. In PASSION (Book 3) You actually get to go back in time and see those past lives. Perhaps then more answers will be reveled. I don’t remember the difference between the dark/silver/gray shadows/announcers, but I have a feeling it was answered in TORMENT. I remember reading it.
I don’t know what is up with Roland other than the fact that he is a demon. I don’t know what caused the fires and I don’t remember know one caring that Todd had died, because I think people did (could be wrong), but I absolutely don’t know what went down the night Trevor died (perhaps that answered will be reveled). I do know that those dozen characters you speak of (even though they didn’t play a big part in FALLEN) are brought back in TORMENT. They play a role.
Also I believe the angels/demons are fighting over Luce (I could be wrong). I don’t really remember why they are since neither side will ever be victorious, but I think It was mentioned in TORMENT and if not I believe it will be mentioned in PASSION. I also believe you find out why, finding out the truth would physically kill Luce, in PASSION. There is a secret Daniel isn’t telling her. A secret he desperately doesn’t want and hopes she never finds out.
I get the fact that you think this book could’ve survived on it’s own instead of being a series, but I don’t think that could’ve happened. There is always the possibility, but I think if that were the case, this book would be extremely long. There is so much your not seeing because you haven’t read TORMENT. In my opinion, If you combined all the important parts of FALLEN & TORMENT and, the upcoming book, PASSION I believe the book would be thicker than the last Harry Potter book.

I agree with you, David just didn't do it for me either; and yes, Cam was a lot more intriguing and captivating until that little twist that left me with no team to root for. Good point about why David fl!pped Luce off, but didn't you feel that was so contrived and unnecessary? If he didn't want to call attention to himself, fl!pp!ng someone off will do anything but that and it seems like his plan just backfired because their attraction seems inevitable. ^^
Also, thanks for shedding light on the shadows/portals and the other aspects of the book I was confused about. I didn't know that, but as you said it's revealed in the subsequent books.
I'm glad you enjoyed and continued with this series and your post might just have me picking up the next few books later in the future, but for now I think I'm going to hold off on continuing with the Fallen series. Books on fallen angels seem to be a miss for me. However, I've heard great things about Unearthly, so I might give that one a try first.
Happy reading!
a... :)

Ummm as someone who has read TORMENT, I say: Don't. You can read my review for the skinny. And I'm sorry, a book should be able to stand on its own, even as part of a series. I don't mean everything should be resolved, but it should still feel like a story. The sequel shouldn't be justified because you farted around for 300 pages before you got to the plot.

I tried to slog through Torment because I liked Cam and wanted to see where that went, but I couldn't drag myself to finish it. (I'm pretty much on Team Anybody-But-Daniel.)
I agree with you about all of the unanswered questions. Out of all the series I've read lately, Fallen is the worst about holding its cards too close and revealing way too little for being almost 1000 pages of reading. The whole mythology is confusing and unexplained.
I'd read Unearthly or Angelfire instead. Better characters, better plot development, better mythology, and some of the most squee-worthy guys all year.

Hush-Hush is just as bad, I remember feeling so disappointing it being the first Fallen Angel book I read. but at least I cared bit more to read the second book but vowed not to continue with the series.
Seriously, Both Novels bring a whole new meaning to the saying 'Don't judge a book by its cover'.

@Sandy, LOL about Daniel. I did not like him AT ALL. I will definitely give Unearthly a try. I need to check out Angelfire. Thanks for the rec!
@Mayomi, Hush, Hush was just as bad...agreed. I didn't like that one either. That's when I started to suspect maybe fallen angels aren't my preferred theme. What a waste of great art cover, huh? LOL
I went to Boarders recently, found UNEARTHLY, and almost picked it up. I’m guessing I should’ve since I’ve been hearing good things about it. I honestly can’t tell you why I left it. It looked interesting and sounded good, but I guess I was thinking more about my other books at home I need to finish.
I will defiantly pick UNEARTHLY up the next time I go out regardless of what I’m thinking. LOL!

But I guess it will get worse?
Cuz everyone seems to hate it.

Funny, that's what I call trolls that create fake profiles to hide behind. Seriously though, if you love the book so much, why the hell did you read my review? :/

Not sure how old you are, but typically GR is not a place for juvenile trolling on random people's reviews. If you loved it so much, feel free to post your raving review about it.
If you disagree, you can just say so without the insults.

Agreed I'm sure there's some raving reviews out there to enjoy ...somewhere...

A beautiful use of the English language and a masterful display of its grammar is showcased tonight by Abbie.
So glad to know there are still intellectual heavy weights like Abbie here-- inspiring all of us with their wordsmithing abilities.

@ Laura. Thank you! Yes, too many unanswered questions and I was left quite irritated with this book. Sorry you didn't care for it either.
Thank you! :)
