it was ok
bookshelves: novels

Farty proto-fascist flapdoodle served up with a twist of hippy bollocks and garnished with enough of a patina of feminist sympathy for it to goosestep rapidly under some people's radar. Yes DH Lawrence could write. Somebody should have stopped him though.

message 1: by Michael (new)

Michael This I haven't read nor will I now. But in the end, it's all about individual tastes.....mgc

message 2: by Ruth (new)

Ruth I haven't read this, either. But I do love that review.

message 3: by Manny (new)

Manny The bit where the primary school teacher loses it and starts hitting her snotty pupils is good though.

message 4: by Ian (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ian "Marvin" Graye I could put up with Lawrence a lot better when I was in my early twenties. I'm sure it would just annoy me now. The Sex Pistols didn't just undermine my tolerance of Pink Floyd.

Paul Bryant Never thought Johnny Rotten could be so improving!

message 6: by Ian (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ian "Marvin" Graye Never Mind John Thomas, Here's the Sex Pistols.

Paul Bryant I still like Saucerful of Secrets

Ian "Marvin" Graye I still like "Careful with That Tax Regime".

Cecily "Yes DH Lawrence could write. Somebody should have stopped him though"

Well, that made me laugh (as did the rest of it), even though I'm very glad no one did!

message 10: by Paul (new) - rated it 2 stars

Paul Bryant I know he has his fans. His wife's old home is at the top of my street.

message 11: by Tanya (new)

Tanya Flapdoodle! lol Love your review! So entertaining. You have a grand mastery of words.

message 12: by Paul (new) - rated it 2 stars

Paul Bryant thanks Tanya!

Sylvia Wyllins DH Lawrence is NOT a MAN it's a WOMAN..Born in Manchester
England.. She is a very good Author.. But a bit too long on details.

message 14: by Paul (new) - rated it 2 stars

Paul Bryant well, I always thought DH stood for David Herbert. and I thought this author was born in Eastwood Nottingham which is a few miles from my home. But you say this is all wrong?

message 15: by Sud666 (new)

Sud666 I'm sorry but..what? D.H. Lawrence is a woman? I must have missed something.

message 16: by Paul (new) - rated it 2 stars

Paul Bryant yes, this surely calls for an explanation - it seems a great hoax has been perpetrated on the literary world.

message 17: by John (new)

John Farebrother Radical review

message 18: by Mike (new)

Mike Lambert A bit harsh.

message 19: by Paul (new) - rated it 2 stars

Paul Bryant yes, this one is too

message 20: by Mike (new)

Mike Lambert Well, I'm reading The Rainbow now, for the first time. I read Women in Love, what, 40 years ago (!), Sons and Lovers. Kangaroo. A few of his novellas/short stories. I'm more interested in the man himself rather than his work which, yes, can be a tad tedious. But there are descriptions and insights which have lingered for many years with me. With The Rainbow it strikes me that he's really trying very well to get to the nitty gritty when it comes to relationships between men and women. So much now is really blunt and lazy, reading D H now is almost refreshing. In a verbose way!

message 21: by Paul (new) - rated it 2 stars

Paul Bryant The Rainbow, as I remember it, is a real reading experience, nothing quite like it; I think DH was a bit mad really! It's a shame I'm not a big fan as he's the local literary hero where I live, in Nottingham, and I regularly walk down the street where Frieda used to live with her first husband.

message 22: by Mike (new)

Mike Lambert Hey..my goodness. I had a pal in Nottingham and he took me to the house in Eastwood. I'm also Australian, though live in the US, and Kangaroo has always been of interest to me largely because of the upset it dished out regarding Australia and in particular the little coastal town of Thirroul where he wrote all but the last chapter of that book. Which, incidentally, has some extremely insightful observations about the Australian landscape and its mysteries. So, a bit of a sage, a bit of a sex God, or wannabe one but always of some interest. After The Rainbow I think Ill visit The Plumed Serpent. About Mexico, another place I have come to love.

message 23: by Paul (new) - rated it 2 stars

Paul Bryant I have a recommendation - it's a book about how a guy didn't get to write a book about D H Lawrence. Very funny.

message 24: by Mike (new)

Mike Lambert Superb, thank you! I hadn't known about it but will make a point of reading it. Cheers, mate.

message 25: by Dave (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dave Schaafsma LOL. I disagree with you, but but appreciate everything you say here.

message 26: by Paul (new) - rated it 2 stars

Paul Bryant ha, one of my rudest ever reviews. He was a very extraordinary writer, for sure. By the bye, I regularly walk past the house where Frieda used to live, it's just a couple of streets away.

message 27: by Dave (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dave Schaafsma And do you spit as you pass by? :)

message 28: by Paul (new) - rated it 2 stars

Paul Bryant No, I doff my cap in reverence. Fair play to DH, he came from nothing and became a rock god of 20th c lit. The fact that I don't care for it is immaterial.

Nagia:') ;")Be BeAutiful and HaPpy ;) Hi Everyone

Paul Bryant thanks, will do

Paul wrote; "Yes DH Lawrence could write. Somebody should have stopped him though."

Unfortunately old DH preceded miniscule shit GR reviewers no one will ever hear of. If you ever take a break from your standard homo glorification, you might see.

Hope you never do.

Kallie aren't you clever.

message 33: by Robert (new)

Robert Cohen Paul, I'm just a short way into the book now, wondering what all the fuss is? Your review is one of the best I've read. I will continue to read this book to the end just to irritate you. Don't thank me, it's just the kind of guy I am.

Personaonthepodium Proto fascist? Don’t disrespect my boy David Herbert like that. The Rainbow is an almost sovietic read!

Arjun A 2/5, you wot m8?

message 36: by Mr (new)

Mr Leon i guess i got goosestepped then

message 37: by Kate (new) - rated it 2 stars

Kate Hamilton Yes. I was infuriated with his repetition, nonsensical descriptions, sudden contradictions and if I was his editor it would've been 10 pages. Gave up after 8 chapters. Time waster.
