It's always a tricky thing reviewing an Elmore Leonard novel. His writing is usually so efficient and effortless that it doesn't seem like he's doing much but his stories sneak up on you anyway. I always struggle to go into detail about why I like the books, other than to say that I really enjoyed the story. He was able to buff and polish his style until the form became invisible and only story shined through. Donald Westlake was the same way in his work. Although there haven't been any Leonard books so far that have blown me away, I can definitely say I've enjoyed the five that I've read. Hombre, considered one of Leonard's classics, is no different. It's a simple plot, about a group of travelers in a mud wagon stagecoach who are stalked by road agents after a satchel of stolen money. Leonard's spare style and his use of first-person (his only novel to use that POV), is effective at lending the story it's mythic tone. It's deceptively uncomplicated and well-paced, right up to it's great final act.

Still Well, you know I love Elmore Leonard and this is one of his best early novels but that was as great a review of this book as I'm likely to find.
Great review, Richard!

William I have seen EL movies, but not read any of his books (I don't think). Perhaps I will.

Thanks Still! Glad you thought I did the book justice.

Terrific review, Richard. I think you articulated the appeal of Elmore Leonard very well; his novels sneak up on me. Quentin Tarantino may have mentioned this already but I just enjoy hanging out with Leonard's characters and then all of a sudden, a story happens.

I've read nine of his novels so far and agree that none blow me away, but the volume and enjoyment of most brooks respect. Stick is my favorite so far.

Richard I went on a paperback binge of Leonard's books a few years ago, but I've gotten sidetracked by other authors. Ive got to read more. So you'd recommend Stick. Anything else? I've so far read Get Shorty, Swag, 52 Pickup, this book, and Valdez is Coming

Matthew Abel I just finished "Riding the Rap" and it was very good - though I feel the same about Leonard - always enjoyable, but not mind-blowing.

Highly recommend that you try Unknown Man #89

I also loved Mr. Paradise and Cuba Libre

But ...seriously -almost anything from his early Westerns to his Crime-Thrillers from 80s-90s is a thrill ride.
He's my go-to guy when things get a bit tiresome in real-life.
