I have read most of the books in this series and reading this one clears up some questions about Will and his interaction with some of the other recurring characters.
This was a good suspenseful story of two young boys who make some horrible choices that change their life's path forever. One goes to jail for 20 years and the other one eventually becomes a police detective. When a murder that fits an old serial killers MO happens, Will is put on the case. The current murder is of a prostitute and Angie, (Will's childhood cohort and adult on and off girlfriend), is working in Vice and knows the victim. Will and Angie keep their relationship a secret in order to keep their seperate investigations running parallel.
I liked how this story moved along quickly and how well the characters were developed. Twists and turns kept it interesting and exciting. I recommend any of the books in this series.

Debby If you had it to do over again, would you begin with Triptych (book 1) and read the series in the order the books were written b/c of the characters being developed and carried through from the beginning? The holes or questions in the storyline would drive menuts if I didn't red them in order. Just wondering?
This book sounds really familiar to me, as if I started it, but gave up on it for being REALLY descriptive of torture. Would you agree? Or, perhaps I'm thinking of another book/author.

✨S³Ü²õ²¹²Ô✨ I would start with this one. Not only is it a suspencful read it took me in so many directions that I couldn't wait to get back to it. No, the torture is minimally described just to establish an MO. I think you maybe talking about "Undone". I just started it and it is pretty bad but I can get past a lot of it because I know how bad Will feels and will not stop until he stops him/it. Learning the background of Will and Angie I think is substantial to the rest of the series and if I had to do over again I would start with this one. Hope this helps.

Debby Thanks! The "descriptive" issue is b/c I listen to all fiction and often @ night when I can't sleep. Most often with a series, I'm drawn to the main character(s) and if the violence isn't simply gratuitous for shock value, then, like you implied, the story carries you through the details.
Have you ever read anything by Cody McFadyen (I think that's how it's spelled). HIs first book Face of Evil blew me away! I've never read a book that gave such insight into the mind of an evil man; howver, the character & background story of Smokey Barrett (female) who hunts him down was phenomenal. I've read 3 of the books in the series. They have each been captivated and at the same time appalled. Kind of interesting how that happens. If you like this Will Trent series, I bet you'd like Cody McFadyen's novels. Check out fantasticfiction for the order in which he wrote the books.
This is what I love about GR; interaction with GR friends about the books we read!

✨S³Ü²õ²¹²Ô✨ Thanks Debby, I will definitely take a look at that author. You and i have similar tastes so I bet I will really like him.

Debby I was wrong. The title of McFadyen's first book Is The Face of Death.

Betsy Smokey Barrett books are AWESOME!!!!!! He just needs to wrote more of them.

✨S³Ü²õ²¹²Ô✨ Looks good Deb. I will put it on the list.

Mary Beth I just finished this tonight and loved it. The ending was scary good.

✨S³Ü²õ²¹²Ô✨ Soooo glad.
I'm up to book 7 and trying to put off reading it because it is the last so far in the series. I'll miss my Will Trent fix.

Mary Beth I can see why! I have the book Broken and I'm going to the library and getting the second and third book. So that I don't have to stop reading them.

✨S³Ü²õ²¹²Ô✨ Oh good. I jumped around when I started the series but would have read them in order if I knew how much I was going to like this series.

Debby I think I may have already recommended this author to you Susan, but if not...since you and Mary like Karin Slaughter, I'd HIGHLY recommend you read Cody McFadyen. His novels are:
1. Shadow Man
2. The Face of Death
3. The Darker Side
4. Abandoned

I've read 1-3 and have been blown away by his writing of sociopaths and psychopaths and how they became so twisted. Kind of like watching a horrific train wreck but you can't stop looking. He's a great writeer. I'm just wondering why he hasn't written anything else since 2009.

I've only read the first book in this series by Slaughter. You have nudged me to check out the othes and in order too!

I can't believe this is coming from you lol! Is this Susan? Hehehe! You're the one that got me to read a series in order because of the character development.
I'm happy you taught me that though because it makes a series so much better.

Mary Beth Debbie thanks for the recommendation. This series looks good and added Shadow Man to my tbr.

Debby HAHa! Mary, I'm a big stickler on reading books in a series in order; however, somehow I read The Face of Death by McFadyen first, then went back to Shadow Man. It would have been best to read Shadow Man first. But, the plot of The Face of Death was SO creepy and McFadyen writes with such an understanding of pure evil, it compelled me to go back and start at the beginning. The main character, Smoky Barrett is AMAZING!
Plus, I went back and checked. I've read the first book in Slaughter's Grant County series, not the Will Trent series.

I know, right? I was first introduced to her through a daily deal on Audible and then another daily deal the following month..so.. I went with the $ savings. But I did go back and start from the beginning and so glad I did. It was hard to put the 2&3 in the series down.

Hey Deb, I have Shadow Man on my short list. Going to look for it at our used book store.
Sarah from the Grant County series was just crossed over into the Will Trent series in the 3rd book.
