Not a bad sci-fi story. A little like the Twilight series - some of the formula poured over into here. I feel like the creativity level was a lot higher as Meyer was working with an alien species of her own creation and not necessarily the myths and legends of the vampires and werewolves.
My only issue is that it seemed to drag on a bit at times. This was only compounded by its length. This is one of those books that I think could have benefited with a trimming.
I think this book was advertised as Meyer getting away from YA, but it is pretty much YA. This is an interesting place to bring up the argument about what makes a book YA? I have seen some books designated YA and it seemed to be only because one of the main characters is a teenagers. Other times, there are books where all the characters are adults that feel so YA it's not even funny! Thoughts?
I don't think you can go wrong with this one if you are looking for a thrilling, sci-fi, YA novel - if you don't mind a bit of filler!

I would agree with that - and it did have a cliffhanger so it could continue. I think I would have liked a sequel better than The Chemist.

I hope you enjoy!

If she ever does a sequel, I will definitely need a re-read or a refresher!

A sequel would be awesome!!! 😊

Yes - those were the types of things that could have been cut back for sure!

Interesting idea on the book being a bit better when she had to develop her own monster... And I wonder if this works the other way, in that the gender swap of book one was really difficult for me to get into and I still haven't gotten around to reading it.
I believe that this was advertised locally (in Aus) as being a departure from supernatural, as opposed to YA.
The Chemist is the one I remember being advertised as a departure from YA.

Thanks, Figgy! And I think you may be right that it was the Chemist that was advertised as being a departure from YA. However, I do stand by my statement about begging confused about what truly constitutes YA. Some books definitely stretch the definition (if there even is one!)

Afterall, the premise is indeed fresh and thrilling. But, ah *that* ending ><

Do you mean tying things up a little too cleanly?
If so - that is what I am thinking a sequel could address. I have read books in the middle of a series before where everything seems perfect at the end and then you open the next book and all hell breaks loose again.

Thanks, Carol! 😁

You know, from what I remember it was actually pretty similar.
