SPOILERS - This review is for people who've read it.
At first I was mad, and depressed. But after a night's sleep, I think it was all worth it just to get to that last scene in Ethan's kitchen. It reminds me of the feeling I got in the Psycho movie when I saw that skeleton of the mother, with her wispy hair, all dressed. Creepy! There are TWO women! And you don't know at first who they are, but you think one of them is Mattie, but surely she's the one walking around, but NO! you can almost hear the Psycho music when you realize that the Querulous Droner is Mattie!!
So .... is Ethan going to fall in love with this new narrator? Is she going to end up the third woman in the kitchen? I want a sequel!!
The story was a bit unbelievable. Zenna being pure evil and Mattie being pure goodness, pew. Ethan being ... what ... mush? That night was the first time he and Zeena ever raised their voices to each other? He lived a year with this girl in his house and they loved each other the whole time and never spoke of it until this night? Then they run into a tree? He slams her into a tree. True love.
So many questions ... Zeena picks them up and cares for them the rest of their miserable lives? Wow, evil, psycho.
This book is said to be full of symbolism. I would love someone to explain to me how we know what the symbols are ... does the author say so in an essay or interview somewhere, or does everyone get to guess themselves at what they think the the symbols represent? I'm always confused about that, also about what the themes are. Wharton says in her introduction that she has themes, but does she ever say what they are? Sparknotes says the theme is social and moral constraints hindering fulfillment of desire. I'd love to know if this is her theme or someone's guess.
Anyway, the cat is an in-your-face symbol, even I got that one. Red is a blaring color. the broken dish, a wedding present, not touched since that day ... got it.

"Lovely writing. Don't know much about narrator, keeps her business to herself, focused on Ethan's story."

"Well, this is not what I expected. Very drawn out ... lots of blushing and lash-lowering. I keep wondering how Ethan can tell Mattie's blushing when they've only got a candle by which to work."
