May Read-a-Thon!

How-to's and Rules, in brief (see link for more details)
Participants should avoid tagging any books the 2 hours prior the start of the read-a-thon and the 2 hours after the end of the read-a-thon.
Be realistic. If you are only capable of reading one/two books a week, unless we're talking about Les Miserables or The Game of Thrones, don't set a 1000 pages goal. On the other hand, if you are a speed reader a 500 pages goal seems rather low.
Only pages from books marked as read count.
â— Mini-Challenges & Games
*Only one Mini-Challenge & Game allowed per team so give us your best shot
*Team's Mini-Challenge & Game suggestion must be posted by one of the Team Captains/Co-Captains till the beginning of the Read-a-Thon May 1st PDT 8:00 AM (BST 4PM). After that it will not be rewarded with the 5 points even if the mods decided to use it during the event
*When creating a Mini-Challenge & Game:
- It has to be fun and quick. We want to take a break of reading BUT we don't want to keep people from reading
- No aditional reading implied.
*Acceptable Ideas:(These are just an example, feel free to think of anything else to suggest!)
*Mini-Challenge #1: Over the Rainbow (*This is choose-a-book only, no reading included)
Build a rainbow with book covers.
Optional: build a rainbow with book covers from your actual bookshelf, then take a picture and post it on the thread.
*Mini-Challenge #2: Leave your Mark
What do you use for bookmarks (whether you use them at all). Take a picture of your bookmarks (or what you use) and post them.
*What NOT to Do: (Ideas that do not fit the fun, quick mini challenge ideal)
Mini-Challenge: What An Animal Book?
Read a book that:
- Has an animal in the title of the book.
- Has an animal on the cover of the book.
- An animal plays a major role in the book.
- A main character is (or turns into) an animal.
â— Participation
You can choose to participate and/or changing your goal anytime. However, we have points and prizes involved so to be fair the time limit to joining or change goal is May 8th PDT 8:00 AM (BST 4 PM).
No changes allowed passing the time limit.

The only real idea I have is to maybe take pictures of our favorite reading seats or our bookshelves. Don't know if the bookshelf one if feasible because some of us may only use ereaders.
I haven't looked at the other threads yet to see what ideas might be posted. I've been in a cleaning/purging mood and want to go with that while it's here.

Well, I can relate anything to reading. Cupcakes and cocktails I can consume while reading, right? LOL!

Also I think I will really simplify my May challenge since there is also this read-a-thon.

So I say we pick something that's easy to meet. I was thinking since we are Cadet Blue we could read a men (and/or women) in uniform as a theme. But I'd go for shifters, vamps, covers with flowers, covers with shirtless guys or whatever.

Mary -- I think those pics are fine! Since they're just graphics, I'd say we can be flexible on shades of blue. And I don't blame you for running with that urge to purge!
Mini challenge ideas -- I'm still thinking but I do love all of your ideas! I think I'm partial to the "snacks/drinks while reading one", though. They are all great but I wonder if the others will be suggested by a lot of teams. We could say that the colors of the snacks could match the team colors (but it wouldn't be required since the mini games are more for fun, no pressure).
(just a note of reference mostly for me heh) We get to submit ONE idea to the mods for them to CONSIDER:An extra 5 points can be earned by suggesting a mini-challenge & game. Only one Mini-Challenge & Game allowed per team so give us your best shot
*Team's Mini-Challenge & Game suggestion must be posted by one of the Team Captains/Co-Captains till the beginning of the Read-a-Thon May 1st PDT 8:00 AM (BST 4PM). After that it will not be rewarded with the 5 points even if the mods decided to use it during the event.
Theme:I don't believe we are rewarded points for our theme, no. I think that other team just wanted to keep their theme secret so nobody else would do it? Not sure! I could see being sneaky with mini challenges but not with themes, although I suppose if they think the theme will benefit their chances of winning...
I do like the uniform idea -- a uniform could represent just about ANYTHING. Doctor's uniform, medic, cop, military, forensic scientist wears lab coats, shifter uniform could be their animal form?, vampire hunter if they wear a specific everyday wardrobe?, etc. BUT, it'd be up to the group mods to decide if we're pushing it with some of our uniform choices, so let's keep discussing this one. If we use it, we could call the theme Books in Uniform, lol!
We only have 11 days to 'power read' so it's a balance between getting any personal reading done for May and helping our team with the RaT so I feel like the theme should be as universal and inclusive as possible. If people want, they could look over TBR lists and if they have a May reading plan, look at the covers and see if there are common themes to suggest, too.

My only reading plan for May so far is that I need to read 2 1000+ page books for another challenge. So I was going to listen to Atlas Shrugged during the read-a-thon. But I'd also be getting print reading in. My plan for the print books is to just get something blue read and then focus on whatever theme was picked, hopefully combining the color & theme.
From Sonia's R-a-T regarding theme:
I'm going to tentatively commit to 1,000 pages for the R-a-T.
â— Each team should choose a theme for the read-a-thon and read at least one book representing that theme.I like the uniform theme. I could read one book, for sure.
*1 point per book read
*30 points if 50% of team members read a book representing the theme
*50 points if all the team members read a book representing the theme
I'm going to tentatively commit to 1,000 pages for the R-a-T.

(from Wikipedia): A uniform is a type of clothing worn by members of an organization while participating in that organization's activity.
Uniform Ideas:
*Armed Forces/ROTC/Coast Guard
*Police/Detective
*Firemen
*Security Guards
*Doctor/Nurse/Anything medical, hospital, clinic/Forensic
*Prison guards/Wardens/Prisoners
*UPS delivery person/Postman
*Restaurant employees/Fast food employees/Hotel employees
*Lifeguard
*Personal trainer in health club
*Mechanic or anything similar
*School uniforms (private school, boarding school, some public schools)
*Sports teams/Sports players
*Scouts (boy scouts, girl scouts, etc)
*Vampire Hunter (or similar in a paranormal/urban fantasy type book) if they wear a specific outfit to go hunting (even if it's a trench coat that they grab on the way out the door, hehe)
*Armor (knights, etc)
*Robes and hats and whatever else they'd wear (Witches, Wizards, etc)
Sound good? Anyone else have uniform ideas? Anyone against this as a theme?

Theme: The uniform could work fine as long as we're going that broad with it. I got a little worried that I would have to read a crime book or something with a cop/firefighter or something like that.
Mini Challenge: My favorite mini challenge is always the "Make a sentence out of books off your shelf and take a picture." If you didn't want to take a picture you could make it out of books off your virtual shelf on goodreads and piece them together. You can't add any words other then a, and, an, the, he, she, i, and other 3 letter or shorter words.
Participation: I'll be trying for 50 pages a day, so 600 pages total.
Was that all the things?

And yep, I think we should go as broad as we want on the theme, without resorting to some form of cheating.

Also, our theme will most likely be "Books in Uniform", which is explained/described HERE! If anyone really hates the idea of that theme, please speak up here.
If you have any mini challenge ideas, please suggest them in this thread, as well! The mini challenges are explained more in detail HERE.
Thanks!

**Mary Dresden: Take pictures of our favorite reading seats or our bookshelves. Don't know if the bookshelf one if feasible because some of us may only use ereaders.
**Mary Dresden: Bake or buy a blue cupcake or make blue cocktails and take pics? We could show pics of our favorite snack and/or beverage while reading.
**Teresa: I think I'm partial to the "snacks/drinks while reading one". We could say that the colors of the snacks could match the team colors (but it wouldn't be required since the mini games are more for fun, no pressure).
**Jex: My favorite mini challenge is always the "Make a sentence out of books off your shelf and take a picture." If you didn't want to take a picture you could make it out of books off your virtual shelf on goodreads and piece them together. You can't add any words other then a, and, an, the, he, she, i, and other 3 letter or shorter words.
**Lisa Kay: Super secret captains' eyes only!
Count me in for the R-a-T. I think I'm going with 1,000 pages. But I may increase it to 1,200 - if we get things a bit more settled here in the "sister group" and on the GS.

So is it cheating if I finish a book during the read a thon that I've been working on before hand? I guess I'm confused on the page number thing since it only counts completed books. I will most likely finish

Hi all! Work is being crazy lately. And my internet is not working...AGAIN... now is all, no internet, no phone, no TV.
I'm currently at a shopping center for the free wireless, and is packed with people - today is a Portuguese holiday - I'll probably will try the isp store to report the issue and the will to my sister's spend the afternoon.
Anyway, I'm in for the read-a-thon, will set the goal at 600, I wanted it to be 1000, but since I'm on read-a-thon duty, better to keep it real. I can always changed on the middle of the RaT.
I love the Books with Uniforms theme. I have The Golden Lily to read, and I think they used school uniforms on Bloodlines. And the last Sookie Stakhouse book is due in the middle of the RaT, so, that part is covered.
The mini-challenge ideas so far look really nice. I'll try to think of something to add, but those are great.

LOL! I can see how that would happen.

Plus, BLUE COVER! You're all set for your cover portion of the RaT! Hehehe.

I can dig up a book in uniform. I'll have to follow up on that though.

I'm worried that I took on too much 100 pages a day. But I'm pretty sure I can do it. I'm a high volume reader normally because of audiobooks. I'm also going through a decluttering project in preporation for a remodel and I'm finally getting around to landscaping my yard. So lots of audiobook time.

I like the uniform idea. Allows for a wide range of books when you expand it beyond military and police.
I will probably use this for my blue book:

Tee hee, for the longest time, I couldn't figure out what 'secret' anagram HDLS was...duhhhh! And sadly, even when I figured it out, I forgot for a day or so because just now I was thinking, "What does that mean?? I thought I figured it out...grrr..*bright light* Oh yeah! Duh" lol!

Okay, brain says it can't compute those letters at the moment. Not that I tried hard, lol. It's going to be obvious, isn't it??
"I Love Blue Guys"?? lol

I am an airhead, lol!
I figured it out. Ugh. I'm leaving up my prior post so you can all poke fun at my silliness, lol!!
Know how I figured it out? I compared it to how you write Mary: HDLS. Wow. I think it's time for lunch and plopping down with a book, lol. Brain need candy.
FOFLMBO! Oh, goodness, Teresa! Thanks for the laugh. Sorry... but it was funny. I can't tell you the number of times I've had to put the abbreviations in Google to see what someone meant.

ROFL! I almost did consult Google for that, hahaha! Glad I could give you a laugh. That's why I didn't even bother deleting that post or editing it. I'm sometimes a silly goofball and I am okay with that, hehe!
This is me not getting off my butt to go eat and veg out. Tsk... Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ is just too fun to walk away from sometimes.
