Hello and welcome to Uno 2018!

I am your captain for this year's trip out of this world. Keep your belongings safely stored so they do not shift while we're journeying through outer space.

Please make sure your Uno shelves are correctly named and link it here in chat, thanks! I will link them in one of my reserved spots for easy access.

Please only put books onto your Uno shelf once they are read. It makes it easier for captains to check if we didn't forget to put a book onto the spreadsheet, verify read dates etc.

For those of you who are new to this challenge, or team challenges in general, please make sure you understood the rules. If you still have questions, feel free to ask away! Either here, or feel free to pm me. I don't bite ;-)

I hope we're going to have a lot of fun! Enjoy the challenge! :-)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments Hello all! looking forward to this trip; hope I don't get space sick!

This is my second Uno, so I think I know what I'm letting myself in for!

message 10: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5001 comments Just a note to the returning players: reread the rules for Wild & Wild Draw 4 cards - there have been some interesting changes ;-)

It'll be fun *grin*

That being said, I've played Uno since the first time the challenge was created by the awesome Karen. I think this is the fourth time now. I lost count.

Helloooo :-)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments Wild Draw Four - so, for the Feb hand four, we'd have to read two books meeting Yellow 1 criteria??
Gah!
Have I mentioned that I hate yellow cards??! Could be worse, I guess, could be a Yellow 5 or 8.

And how does the WD4 work in Feb hand 5, which doesn't have any colours? Does it just act as a Wild card?

message 13: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5001 comments The Wild Draw 4 doesn't have to be matched to a coloured card in the same hand. It can be any of the coloured cards we have that month.

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments ah! thanks :)

I really must get better at reading rules!

Welcome!

message 16: by Louise (new)

Louise | 1282 comments Hi everyone, I think this is my 3rd outing in UNO, will need to go re-read the rules. I also hate yellow cards🙁

My uno shelf 2018-UNO
Very original!

message 18: by Savana (new)

Savana Connett Hi guys!!!! ☺️☺️
This is my first time playing Uno as well. I’m pumped!!
My shelf is Uno 2018

message 19: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5001 comments Good to see the excitement! :-)

message 20: by Savana (new)

Savana Connett I have a quick question, if you don't mind!
How is it that we will determine who will be reading what? Or I guess my question could be, how did you determine last time? Just curious!!!

message 21: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5001 comments Basically, you just pick a book you want to read and see which cards it could work for, and then we'll fit it where it works best.

It's easier to get the harder cards done first - which is the Reverse cards, the coloured cards and the Wild Draw 4 in this case.

Other cards that are a little trickier are 5 and 7 - I and V.

message 22: by Savana (new)

Savana Connett Thanks so much! ☺️☺️

message 28: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5001 comments Good morning everyone!

I've messaged the two remaining members of the team and hopefully they're going to check in over the course of the day :-)

What are your plans for this Sunday? Which is promising to be gray and blergh here in Luxembourg..

For now, I'm going to go read a little bit as I want to finish Reap the Wind (Cassandra Palmer, #7) by Karen Chance (a red cover... I could kick myself now for having read it before Uno started haha). I really enjoy this series and while this one could have used a little bit more editing, it's full o action again as per usual.

Later I'm going to bake some cookies, the dough was prepared yesterday and needed to rest for at least 12 hours.

Kelly (louloo) | 313 comments Hi All

This is my first Uno challenge so be gentle...

Happy Sunday!

Eldarwen | 5001 comments Welcome to the team, Kelly :-)

message 31: by Ashlee (new)

Ashlee | 370 comments Hi all! I didn't realize teams had already been assigned. Exciting! This is my 3rd Uno challenge. It always turns out to be a fuun challenge because I clear a lot from my TBR and get new suggestions.

message 32: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5001 comments Hello hello Ashlee!

That's the plan this year - clear some stuff from my TBR, especially the books that have been sitting around for a while, but preferably without adding too many new books. We'll see how that goes ;-)

message 33: by Louise (new)

Louise | 1282 comments Hi Ashlee and Kelly,
My plan also is to clear a lot off my TBR. Currently getting over a bad throats infection. Curled up on sofa with a blanket, and The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

message 34: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5001 comments That sucks! Hopefully you'll feel better soon!! I've never read The Hobbit but love the movies, though apparently they embellished and added a lot. Are you enjoying it?

message 35: by Louise (new)

Louise | 1282 comments Thanks E I'm enjoying The Hobbit, I first "read " It as a class read back in primary school. I've tried watching the films but I can't get past the first half hour, although I love the LOTR films.

message 36: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5001 comments Ah but that's when it starts getting good. Sweet Kili and then Legolas pops in, and that super awesome dragon even if he's evil.

Maybe next time try starting at the half hour mark where you usually stop and see if you can continue?

message 37: by Katie (new)

Katie | 230 comments Hope you're feeling better soon, Louise!

That sounds like a pretty perfect Sunday, Eldarwen.

It was freezing cold yesterday, so we didn't take the kids out. That means that all errands are being run today. We have to hit the grocery store, book store (not a bad thing...), and Target. Then it's as much cleaning as we can squeeze in and also prevent the kids from undoing... :) Don't worry, Cat, I also hope to squeeze in some reading, too!!!! :P

message 38: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (louloo) | 313 comments Hope you feel better soon Louise. I’ve just taken my 1 year old out for a walk in the hope it might tire him out - not sign of that yet! Managed to finish my current read however and due to start a new book tonight. It’s needed as my TBR pile is huge.

message 39: by Savana (new)

Savana Connett It’s nice and dreary and cold here too, in Arkansas USA. We are supposed to get rain today, making it more cold. I’m planning on making a blanket nest, drinking tea, and reading/watching movies with my husband all day.
Where is everyone from?

message 40: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5001 comments Lol, yes the undoing of the cleaning/tidying.... ;-)

Sounds like you're all having a good time though!

message 41: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5001 comments Savana wrote: "Where is everyone from?"

I'm from Luxembourg :-)
Hasn't rained today but it hasn't really gotten light either unfortunately.

message 42: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (louloo) | 313 comments Hi Savana
I’m from the UK. 😊

message 43: by Katie (new)

Katie | 230 comments I'm in Pittsburgh. :)

message 44: by Savana (new)

Savana Connett It’s so fun to meet new people, and I see that we are all over the world!

message 45: by Ashlee (new)

Ashlee | 370 comments Interesting, Katie. I'm about an hour east of Pittsburgh. I feel your pain with the cold. It has been a perfect weekend to read.

message 46: by Ashlee (last edited Jan 07, 2018 09:54AM) (new)

Ashlee | 370 comments Just out of curiosity, how many of us are doing the cutthroat challenge in NBRC?

message 47: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5001 comments Not me. I decided to stay away from the big challenge this time. I wasn't in the mood for lots of strategy and Cutthroat seemed to require that.

message 48: by Cat (new)

Cat (cat_uk) | 2147 comments Katie & I are in Cutthroat - team Oathbringer :)

braced for the sabotages...

so my plan for Uno is to take it easy!

yeah, I know - we'll see how long that lasts! ;-)
