Emily Eternal by M.G. Wheaton
I feel dumbener for having finished this even after I could see the downward slope it was skidding down midway through.

LOL Oh, man. That's harsh!

I finished listening to The King of Plagues and enjoyed the hell out of it.

Tyler Metcalfe I want to try to become an active member here if I can make the time.

All my books this year other than comics are all entered on here. I checked out a couple of horror authors I never had before.

1. Greg Gifune A Winter Sleep

He has a great, creepy style. The way the book began reminded me of the game Silent Hill for some reason. Very atmospheric and creepy. The flash back scenes and some of the endgame material brought it down a little for me, but I think it’s worth a read for anyone.

2. Jonathan Janz Savage Species

I have a few books of his on my shelf, but never read them. I read Savage Species last week, which is his throwback to Richard Laymon (Laymon writes great fast paced horror, and can get very graphic if you haven’t read him). This book was an absolutely carnage filled slaughter. A little too long of a book for what it is IMO, but I enjoyed every second (except one chapter looking inside a killers mind).

3. Currently reading The Dark Game by Jonathan Janz. I like his style so far.

The Dark Game

I read Sci Fi a lot and fantasy some as well, and manga, so I have to balance out my time with it all.

I really enjoyed it, more than I thought I would.

message 465: by Conor (new)

Conor McGreevy (daft_goose) | 17 comments I have read quite a lot of James Herbert this year, spurred on by finding an old copy of 'Ash' previously left in a drawer upon receipt.

Once I realized it was actually a trilogy I started from the beginning and I am so pleased to have found Mr Herbert. Whilst none of his stories could be called top literature, each story is engaging and entertaining. Some of the endings in his books feel rushed and often stretch the realms of possibility (even for books about the paranormal), but the journey to get to that point makes it all worthwhile.

Daniel James | 62 comments I’m deep into Nick Cutter’s The Troop and so far I’m loving it. Great body horror tale with interesting characters. Though I was reading it yesterday and it did kind of put me off the pad Thai I had for dinner. If you’ve read this book I’m sure you can understand.

This bums me out because I think I have a signed copy of it. :(

I finished reading Violet Violet by Scott Thomas by Scott Thomas. While I did enjoy it, it did not live up to my high hopes.

It was okay for a second book. Not as good as the first one in the series, in my opinion.

It was okay but I would read more from the author.

message 478: by Greg (new)

Greg | 1680 comments Finished reading The Midnight Gardener & The Well of Tears this morning. This is an omnibus of two books that form part of a trilogy - it think it would've been better if all three books had been combined instead.

However, overall, this was a nicely written fantasy quest-style YA (double-)novel with an LGBT angle to it. A deus ex-like solution (involving makeshift technology) to a problem in the second part of the book wasn't convincing to me and knocked one star off what would otherwise have been a five-star rating.

Frustrated now, as I don't have the third book in the trilogy to hand so that I can complete the tale!

Another one that was just in the "okay" category for me.

message 480: by Char (new)

Char | 17385 comments Aww, Erin, you're on a just okay run. Hope your next knocks your socks off!

I finished Wicked Weird: An Anthology of the New England Horror Writers Wicked Weird An Anthology of the New England Horror Writers by Amber Fallon .

This is one of a series put together, each starting with Wicked. They all have very cool covers and feature authors from New England. Here, Wicked is used as an adjective loosely meaning extraordinary. IE: That Dunkin coffee is WICKED good.

Anyway, I enjoyed it! I own the previous books in the series but haven't read them yet. I'm looking forward to that even more now.

Char | 17385 comments I finished listening to Assassin's Code by Jonathan Maberry. This is a very strange thing for me...I just don't care much for military/action books, even if there are horrific elements. (Books like The Fisherman are more up my alley.) However, when I gave this Joe Ledger series a second try on audio, I'm LOVING them. I think the narrator's delivery changed the entire tone of the book for me. I"m looking forward to reading #5 in the series.

Greg | 1680 comments Finished reading Lovecraftiana: Lammas Eve 2019 which I enjoyed overall, though I found two of the stories were in need of significant editing and concision. Therefore, it's a three-and-a-half star read for me, rounded up to four stars. I especially liked the stories by Ronald Linson, David Kenney, Dean Wirth and R. C. Mulhare, so I'll be keeping an eye out for other stories written by these authors.
