Here we can chat about anything and everything!

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 382 comments Sounds good! These are always the some of the funnest threads!

Anyone do anything fun or exciting for Easter? If you do or don't celebrate it.

My mom and I traveled down to my sister's and went Easter egg hunting with my niece and nephew. It was a blast! Celebrated my B-day as well since it was the day before. Brownies!

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 382 comments Thanks guys!

Well at least I hope you enjoyed the weekend and did something fun for yourselves. We've had super cold weather and then out of no where it's 80 degrees! So intense.

Oh! Well, I have been busy lately and am stuck with assignment and exams, so haven't had any fun, on the contrary, the weather here has been hot, it's summertime here.

message 7: by Arundhati (new)

Arundhati | 1454 comments I had a busy and tiring weekend. Had to move to a new place due to work and spent the whole weekend setting up the place. But I have few leaves coming up next week so I am looking forward to catching up to my tbr as much as possible. Yeah it's summer here. It doesn't get that cold here at all. It's like varying degree of hot throughout the year.

Arundhati | 1454 comments Do you guys like retellings/ reimaginations of fairytales or classic stories? If yes then which one is your favorite?

We're just coming out of Winter and apparently this might be one of those Springs where it's just—BOOM!—hot and a early summer.

Fun stuff! Good luck with your studies! Is it end of the school year exams?! I always hated those!

Good luck with your moving! I hope you like the new place. That sounds like a good plan and I hope you get to use your leave how you want. ^_-

Ah, I always wonder if I'd miss the seasons if I lived in a climate like yours.

Yes, I do! Can never get enough of them. It's odd I never get bored of'em.

Beauty and the Beast is my favorite, but it always seems like I end up reading more Cinderella ones.

Even I love retellings. Just cannot get enough. I think beauty and the beast and cindrella retellings are the most popular ones. Even I love beauty and beast retellings. My favorite was A Curse So Dark and Lonely ( hated the other two books in the series though).

Recently I have been trying out some new and not so popular ones. The one I am currently reading is a Peter Pan retelling. Which is totally new to me.

Oh I have Cinderella Is Dead on my tbr. I am a big fan of the lunar chronicles. The whole series is such great set of retellings. Marissa Meyer definitely does some great retellings. Even Heartless which was based on the Red queen of Alice in the wonderland was so great.

Ya right? Heartless was very heart breaking. Villain back stories are tough. When you know there is no happy ending for them and still you keep on hoping throughout that maybe? Heartless made me cry. It's definitely worth a try :)

Oh, man! Peter Pan retellings have been some of the most creative and scariest ones I've read!

I just bought A Curse So Dark and Lonely and the second book. After hearing how it's the best "beauty and the beast retelling" and so unique.

To be honest Rosemund Hodge holds a special place in my heart for her BandB retelling, but her Romeo and Juliet retelling is EVERYTHING!

I love the Lunar books.

I keep putting of Heartless because everyone keeps saying how it will destroy you.

Ya the whole vibe is creepy and scary for Peter Pan.

A Curse So Dark and Lonely is really great. I hope you enjoy it.

I haven't tried anything from Rosemund Hodge. Which one will you suggest to start with?

I remember from the Once Upon a Time TV show that the Peter Pan story was the darkest and most intense. Too. There's just something about lost boys and stolen kids.

I hope so too! I hope I'll like the rest of the series.

I know Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge was her first book and many just say to start there. And I think you will get a taste for her writing style.

However, her Bright Smoke, Cold Fire (Bright Smoke, Cold Fire, #1) by Rosamund Hodge and Endless Water, Starless Sky (Bright Smoke, Cold Fire, #2) by Rosamund Hodge are her Romeo and Juliet retellings and I just wish I could get more people pumped about them as they are about her previous two works.

message 23: by Erica (new)

Erica | 1309 comments I've read a lot of retellings. I have a whole shelf for them. After the ones all ready mentioned The Girl in Red is a good option. It is a red riding hood retelling. It's more new adult horror and it is set in the US after a coughing plague has ruined society. I read last year and I didn't realize the whole plague thing so naturally it freaked me out, but it was still really good. The author Christina Henry has some other retelling that I have yet to read. Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan.

OUAT is one of my fav shows and yes the peter pan arc was intense. Wow we have so much in common.

I have heard of cruel beauty a lot. I will bring it up on my tbr list. Romeo and Juliet is supposed to be tragedy right. Am I gonna get my heart totally shattered by the end of these? I would have to prep my heart before reading.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 382 comments I actually would like to see more Rumpelstiltskin retellings. There are some, but I think it's very underrated.

message 29: by Kay (new)

Kay I know, there are just retellings of the more popular faery tales, I think :(

What's a good "Rapunzel" retelling?

message 30: by Arundhati (new)

Arundhati | 1454 comments The only Rumpelstiltskin retelling I know is Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik. Which I haven't read so can't tell if it's any good. Honestly I wouldn't even know about Rumpelstiltskin if not for OUAT. It's such an underrated and underapreciated gem.

The only rapunzel retelling I have read is Cress from the Lunar chronicles series. Has anyone read any other than that?

I've been putting off Spinning Silver!! I really need too. Before OUaT there was a cartoon movie I group up on watching. I was obsessed. I wish a I could find it. There was a song and everything from it that I was obsessed with. So when Rumple was a villain in OUaT I was not surprised at all. Ha-ha!

Cress of course. Like Arundhati said. Some of the top books in the list I have read.

I have been dreading to read Spinning Silver. Naomi Novik is a completely hit or miss author for me. I hated Uprootedwhereas I liked her new novel A Deadly Education.

Woah there is a whole list of rapunzel retellings? I didn't know there are so many out there. Thanks for sharing Shera.

I own every Naomi Novik book, but I shamefully haven't read a single book by her!!!! I really mean too.

ŷ lists are awesome!!! Of course!

Erica | 1309 comments So I'm a big vote for reading Spinning Silver. I do love Uprooted but Spinning Silver was even better. I enjoyed A Deadly Education as well. Reading her dragon series is on the tbr.

I can't think of any other Rumpelstiltskin or Rapunzel retellings.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 382 comments It really is. But I have her other books to tide me over. I haven't read anything outside of her Lunar books.

I have tried almost everything she put out other than The Lunar Chronicles. I liked Heartless but dnfed her Renegades series. Recently she wrote a YA contemporary Instant Karma. Read that also found it to bd ok. I think she writes retellings the best.

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 382 comments I've been very curious to read her Renegade books. I don't have instant karma on my future purchases shelf. Part of me feels like contemporary isn't her thing. I do agree. She's got a gift for retellings. Even her shorts for the Lunar books.

message 45: by í (new)

í˛ oh I see some Marissa Meyer going on gotta join
The Lunar Chronicles are my absolute all time favorites and I just can't express how much I love every single word (Jacinter is otp hehe)
I personally liked Renegades, but didn't have a chance to read the second two books
I dnf'd Instant Karma... I'm gonna try again but meh. I'm really suffering with it :/

Shera (Book Whispers) (sherabookwhispers) | 382 comments Have you seen the new covers for the Lunar Chronicles!! The old ones are great, but those new ones are just stunning!!!
Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1) by Marissa Meyer Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles, #2) by Marissa Meyer Cress (The Lunar Chronicles, #3) by Marissa Meyer

message 47: by Arundhati (last edited Apr 08, 2021 09:18PM) (new)

Arundhati | 1454 comments Yeah I have seen the news ones. They are cool. Gives out the sci-fiesque feel which is fitting. But I think I liked the old ones much better. How every cover was had the significant object the retelling represented. I loved them.

Hi Mira welcome to the discussion. I love Lunar Chronicles too. My fav has to by Cress and Thorne. <3 Instant Karma was so tough to get into initially. The whole unlikable insufferable heroine thing going on and can't even say it gets a lot better or anything.

Way too many. Shipping. Let's see basically every book by Nalini Singh in her Psy-Changeling books. I don't know how she does it, but I live for each couple. Best part is she creates solid female leads that I'd love to be BFFs with, which only makes the shipping all the better because she creates some of my fave male hunks leads.
