message 64: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan (jonathan_maberry) | 1 comments I'm Jonathan Maberry,I’m a NY Times bestselling author and Marvel Comics writer. My first YA novel just hit the bookstores: ROT & RUIN (Simon & Schuster, hardcover).

ABOUT THE BOOKS: In the zombie-infested world Benny has grown up in, every teenager must work once they turn fifteen—or they'll lose their food rations. Benny isn't interested in taking on the family business, but he reluctantly agrees to train as a zombie killer with his boring big brother, Tom. He expects a dull job, whacking zombies for cash. What he discovers is a vocation that will teach him what it really means to be human.

As Benny's worldview is challenged again and again by the lessons he learns from Tom, he is forced to confront another horrifying reality: sometimes, the most terrible monsters are the human ones.

Critically acclaimed NY Times bestselling author Jonathan Maberry crafts a terrifying future vision of the zombie apocalypse, brought to life through the rich emotional struggles of a teenager trying to find his place in a tumultuous new world.

Praise for.. RUIN & RUIN:

"…an action-packed, thought-provoking look at life—and death." --Kirkus Book Review

"A thrilling triumph, full of action, gripping conflict, soul-fullness, gore, solemnity, and hope. A coming of age piece honed in the ashes of the apocalypse." ---Fiendishgly Bookish

"Thrilling, enticing, and surprisingly touching!" --Heather Brewer -Bestselling author of the Chronicles of Vlad

"This is a romping, stomping adventure. Anyone with a pulse will enjoy this novel, and anyone with a brain will find plenty of food for thought inside!" --Michael Northrop -bestselling author of Gentlemen

"George Romero meets The Catcher in the Rye in this poignant and moving coming of age novel set during zombie times." --Nancy Holder -NY Times bestselling author of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Pretty Little Devils

"Captured my heart from the first page and refused to let go!" --Maria V. Snyder -multi award-winner and bestselling author of Poison Study

Kristina (kristinalawhead) Hey everyone! I'm Kristina, I'm 23 and live in Saint Louis, I am a YA-aholic and I admit to still re-reading my old Baby-Sitters Club books :) I am an elementary school teacher so I am forever reading books for kids too!

Welcome Kristina! Someone in my other group has all of her old Babysitters Club books and re-reads them too, so you are not alone! I used to wish I was in the Babysitters Club - how cool would that have been? p.s. I live in central IL only about 2-3 hours away from St. Louie.

message 70: by Kristina (new)

Kristina (kristinalawhead) Heidi I actually recently moved here from central IL, I am from Champaign and I miss it SO MUCH. And I'm glad to hear I'm not the only BSC freak, I used to wish I was in it too!

Kristina (kristinalawhead) Oh yeah I've been to B-N tons of times! When i visit home from STL I have to take the train to the Bloomington depot. I'm sure you miss home, its tough being away from family :(

message 83: by mstan (new)

mstan Hi everyone! I am a high school teacher from Singapore. I recently got a little addicted to YA because I was looking for suitable books for my students (it was just an excuse to read a lot!). I have always been a voracious and omnivorous reader, and love all kinds of writing.

Hello mstan! So glad to meet you. I have a co-worker whose wife teaches 8th grade English and she never reads herself! It makes me sad :( So glad there are teachers out there that care about what their students read enough to read the books too.

message 86: by mstan (last edited Mar 16, 2011 08:25AM) (new)

mstan Thank you for the warm welcome! I teach 10th grade English and Literature (here, English is viewed as English language, and is more skills-based, and is separate from Literature, so I teach two subjects). It's true that not all language teachers read, unfortunately. It's really interesting for me to read all the recommendations I've gotten from goodreads, and try to filter them through my own cultural lenses, because we're also a lot more conservative about certain issues here (e.g adolescent sex).

I'm looking forward to participating in the discussions here!

Jaimie (jaimier) | 123 comments Hey all - I know some of you from YA for Adults. I am 27 and live in the mountains of ColoRADo where it snows 8 months of the year, giving me plently of reasons to stay inside curled up with a book. I read a pretty wide range in genres but love me some YA. Through goodreads I have found so many new authors and great recommendations.

Michelle Isenhoff (michelleisenhoff) Hi all! I'm Michelle. I'll be 38 next week and I've never outgrown kids books. So I went into teaching. When I'm not reading (or teaching) I'm writing in the high-middle/teen genre. Or blogging - where I review, you guessed it, kids books. I decided to go indie this year and put my five novels in print and ebook format on my own. (Websites on profile). I love talking kids books!
