Hard to imagine a Frenchman throwing himself face down and lying in the mud for 30 minutes--all for love.

Feels a bit like a Dostoevsky novel at times. Main character goes into a field, distraught by his need to betray a perfectly good girl to return to his first love, and throws himself face down on the ground. He lies there for 30 minutes.

Liking this much more reading it as opposed to listening on tape. Lots of venom against Russia from Turgenev; clearly wants his country to reform. Interesting that many of his criticism could probably be made today.

Decided to reread this. I listened in the car and felt that perhaps I was too distracted at times. Now I've got the book-book, and lo and behold, I'm enjoying it more. A worrisome thought--audio books as a vastly inferior way to "read." Probably, but still the best use of commute time.

Wow. I didn't realize how awesome Turgenev was.
