Can someone explain why book 3 is so much better than 1 and 2? It's literally the same story formula in every book. Is it because he has a sidekick and girlfriend now, so he's more relatable?

Jim Butcher's author's note about people saying book 3 is where the series takes off and that being true made me chuckle. Why was that necessary?
