The authors that have inspired me the most are John Fowles, John LeCarre, and A.S. Byatt. I have specific favorites among their books. For Fowles it's The Magus and The French Lieutenant's Woman; for LeCarre, it's Little Drummer Girl, The Constant Gardener, and The Perfect Spy. For A.S. Byatt it's Possession. I've written 5 Young Adult novels, a book of short stories, and two non-fiction books on writing. I love to read good non-fiction (Erik Larson, David Grann, Daniel James Brown), but I also read memoirs and fiction as well. I pick things off the bookstore shelves, I read reviews and become intrigued by a book, I read the recommendations that bookstore employees write on cards beneath books.

Yes, his speaking part is larger. Getting it right is tricky, though.

I shall do my best although the location makes it more likely that they won't, unless they put in an appearance in the end.
Elizabeth George
I don't know when, actually, but it was never my intention to write any of them out of the seri3es.

Whenever a writer sells her work to a production company, she has to allow the company a lot of leeway when it comes to what they eventually do with the adaptation. Having said that, I like the choices they have made with regard to casting as I've seen the screen tests of both actors singly and together, and they "get" the nuances of the two main characters. I think one of the reasons they chose young actors is that they don't want them to age out of the parts. If the series is successful and the BBC and Britbox want to renew it, it's important that the characters aren't too old to play Lynley and Havers in future episodes. The original Lynley and Havers, for example, couldn't play the roles now as it's been nearly 30 years since the first series was filmed.

I haven't, actually. He's brilliant, though, isn't he? He never rested on his laurels. Always something new. "The Magus" is my favorite. He revised it and republished it, but I've only read the original, which I loved.

Lots of traveling in England, lots of interviews on the ground in England, and lots of preliminary and secondary research. I'm in England even as I answer this, doing the preliminary research for the 23rd Lynley novel.

It's great to know there will be a 23rd. When you were in Cornwall, I thought maybe Lynley was going to retire! That would be horrible! We need more Lynley and Havers and I hope we'll see Azar and Haddyah again. And Inspector Lo Bianoco!

I haven't read them, I'm afraid.

The new Lynley series is being filmed in Ireland even as I write this. I must say that the productions are only loosely based on the novels. The shows will have the same titles, the victims will be the same, but I'm afraid that's about it. I will say, however, that I've seen the screen tests for the two actors playing Lynley and Havers, and they're very good. There will be a lot of swooning over Lynley.

The 22nd Lynley novel "A Slowly Dying Cause" will be published in September 2025.

Thanks so much. I wanted to write a novel in which a young boy makes all the wrong decisions for all the right reasons. I wanted readers to care as much about him as they cared about Helen, who was murdered. I also wanted to challenge myself with an omniscient narration.

Fascinating. I don't see Lynley at all similar to P.D. James's detective. Lynley has a rich and complicated personal life while Dalg has virtually no life outside of policing. We learn that he is a poet and that his wife died in childbirth (I think) but that's the extent of it. He has no friends, only associates. Lynley has friends as well as associates.

Yes. "A Slowly Dying Cause" will be published next September.

(view spoiler)[Hmmm. I haven't considered that. But of course as it stands, Lynley doesn't know who really killed his wife, does he? (hide spoiler)]

I'm so glad someone besides me brought up Lynley. Don't want to nag by any means, but really hankering for another of these great books! Have been following them since they first came out. I admire your consistently great output! It looks like I better read the Whidby books now.

Book Number 4 is a prequel to the other books. One can read it first or read it in the order in which the books were published. Essentially it shows "how we got to where we are today." I might do another prequel later on.
