(Book 70 from 1001 books) - Timbuktu, Paul Auster

Timbuktu is a 1999 novella by Paul Auster. It is about the life of a dog, Mr Bones, who is struggling to come to terms with the fact that his homeless master is dying. The story, set in the early 1990's, is told through the eyes of Mr Bones.

The story centers on his last journey with his ailing master, Willy G. Christmas, to Baltimore, but the details of both of their early lives are told in flashback.

The title of the book comes from the concept of the afterlife as proposed by Willy G. Christmas, a self-titled poet, who believed it was a beautiful place called Timbuktu.

A major running theme in the book is Mr Bones' worry that dogs will not go to Timbuktu, and he won't see Willy again after death.

Timbuktu is a somewhat atypical book in Paul Auster's bibliography since a dog speaks here. After years of living together with his faithful companion, Christmas, Mr Bones suddenly loses him when he collapses in the street.
He then takes us on his wandering journey, mixed with existentialist reflections on death and separation. This work is a supreme nightmare for this devoted animal known for its unwavering attachment.
This novel allowed me to re-enter Paul Auster's sphere, this time on the right side, before becoming an avid reader. I enjoyed it, but it did not profoundly mark me. I would also be interested to know what Paul Auster thinks about it. That said, it is a delightful, touching novel worth reading.

At its worst, this novella is a prolonged & sorrowful swan song. An existential meditation. At its peak however, it remains a radical exercise in stream-of-consciousness narration. Although reminiscent of Virginia Woolf at her most coherent, it's a relief to have a book that does not require trips to the ever-faithful dictionary. And gratefully, this work is not rife with pretensions-galore (a-la "Book of Illusions," which is thankfully newly off the '1001 Best Books' List) and has the amount of imagination and sense of wonderment/awe which a work like this demands.

The whole book in P.O.V. of a dog: there are moments when you think the author will absolutely fail, and the time seems impending... though it never really comes. Paul Auster succeeds in telling a sad, simple, organic tale of the universal connection that makes everyone part of the biological Brotherhood/Sisterhood/Universe. Even dogs with men connect; even a dog's innermost psyche has substantial clout in the actual, outside real world.

Mr. Bones is living a dog鈥檚 life. He is almost a peer to his master Willy G. Christmas. Willy is a kind-hearted, but damaged man, a child of holocaust survivors. Given to delusions, and writing poetry, he is homeless and in failing health. The road trip here is a walking journey to Baltimore, home to Bea Swanson, beloved high school teacher. He wants to offer to her his mass of unpublished writings, and to find Mr. Bones a home before his swan song. According to Willy, on the other side of death lies Timbuktu, a place where everything is wonderful.

The story is told in the third person omniscient, but really we are seeing the world through the eyes of Mr. Bones. Bones is not your typical dog. Although he lives in a world of scent and likes his bit of tail, he is a thoughtful critter. He is doggedly loyal to Willy, staying with him to the end. Auster takes things a bit beyond, as he likes to do. Bones not only thinks like a person, he dreams like one. Maybe his dreams are more like detailed premonitions. In one he transforms into an insect, then flies along with an ambulance to the hospital where Willy ultimately passes.

Willy does pass on, so Bones has to make his way in the world alone. He tries hunting with minimal success, finds a meal ticket via a lonely Chinese boy named Henry Chow. The boy is afflicted with a father who hates dogs, and, most unsettling to Bones, he lives above a Chinese restaurant. He heads for the hills after dad finds out, and finds his way into a nice suburban home. The mom, Polly, and her young daughter, Alice, love him, as does the little boy, Tiger. But the home is not entirely happy and dad, Dick, is not thrilled about having a hairy animal around his pristine home.

Even though his life has moved on, Bones is still visited in his dreams by the love of his life, Willy, and by the story鈥檚 end, he is facing his own demise. Can dogs be admitted to Timbuktu as well as people?

This may sound like a grim tale. It is not. It is a character portrait, of a dog and his man. A love story, with commentary on poetry, dreams, artistic ambitions, identity, what is important in life, with some observations about life in general and people in particular. I remain perplexed by the odd item or two, but this was an engaging, enjoyable read. Good book, good book, good.

Marvelous book. Look, if you are a dog owner, or have been or love dogs you have to read this book. I don't think dog books usually work, but this one does.

You are in the head of a dog, Mr. Bones. You say, 鈥淚t just cannot be good!鈥 but I swear it is. Mr. Bones is a scruffy dog. He has a hard life, all sorts of different owners. His first owner was Willy, a bit of a tramp but he had hard times, and then he died. Seven "good" years with Willy, but life goes on.....unless, unless he can get back to Willy!

What makes this book special is that Paul Auster knows how dogs think. Yeah sure, a dog can get confused, but who doesn't?! Secondly, it is so damn funny. And sad....because sadness is tied to good memories. Love and happiness, hard times and good times and sadness, well, they all go together. Don鈥檛 they?

One thought of Mr. Bones: "Just turn around the letters of dog and what do you have?"

The narration by Joe Barrett was superb. Couldn't be improved. He just reads the lines, adds only a bit of inflection just when needed. He knows when to pause.

Tell me, does a book have to be serious to be considered worthy of four stars? I don't think so. Read this. It is LOTS of fun.......and sad.

I have bought another book by this talented author. I cannot stop here!

Sweet, tender, surprising, lovely voice of the dog, Mr. Bones, but don't read if you love animals, too, too sad.

Who saw "Old Yeller?" Who cried when Old Yeller got shot at the end?

Nobody cried when Old Yeller got shot? I cried my eyes out.
*

----- ----- ----- ----- -----

And you will fall for Mr. Bones too, as you see the world through his eyes. Or maybe his snout. There is, indeed, a Symphony of Smells within, and other assorted delights. (Some plot spoiling follows.)

Mr. Bones is smart, as dogs go. He knows what you're saying and is frustrated that he can't speak back. Wo贸f! Wo贸f! Wo贸f! He is loyal, and cautious. He is not bitter about his dog's life. That's just how it is, you know. He had a ten-day affair with Greta, a malamute from Iowa City; other romances had been brief, impetuous.

He learned most of what he knows from his first master, Willy G. Christmas, a promising young poet until college happened and Willy's mind followed the drugs. "We're talking about highly combustible materials here, aren't we? You walk around with nitroglycerin in your brain, and sooner or later you're going to bump into something." But Mr. Bones learned some dog tricks and some human tricks too.

He would have a short stay with Henry, a Chinese-American boy who hides Mr. Bones from his restaurant-owning father and re-names him 'Cal'. See, Henry is a Baltimore Orioles baseball fan. Mr. Bones has to flee to avoid being the 'Chicken' with broccoli and rice entr茅e, or so he imagines.

His next stop is a family of four. He is found by daughter Alice. Auster tells us that Alice is no ordinary person -- and isn't it nice that he only tells us that much? Alice's mother, Polly, is whom Mr. Bones falls for though. We do too. Her husband is appropriately named. Dick is the one who insists on getting Mr. Bones fixed.

It is Polly who says, "You understand what we're saying, don't you, old dog? ... You're a special one, aren't you? And you're tired and beat-up, and you need something to put in your belly. That's it, old-timer, isn't is? You're lost and alone, and every inch of you is tuckered out."

You got that right, Polly.

I really liked this. Chien 脿 tout faire. Recommended for mutts.

I may be biased as an animal lover but the picture of the sad-eyed, shaggy dog on the cover had me sucked in from the start, and the down-on-his-luck Mr Bones & Paul Auster didn鈥檛 let me down.

鈥淭hat's all I've ever dreamed of, Mr. Bones. To make the world a better place. To bring some beauty to the drab humdrum corners of the soul. You can do it with a toaster, you can do it with a poem, you can do it by reaching out your hand to a stranger. It doesn't matter what form it takes. To leave the world a little better than you found it. That's the best a man can ever do.鈥

I guess I'm a little tough on this one, giving it ***. I am a sucker for a story about a dog, but, I am not so fond of the story being told by the dog, as if it's a human in a dog body. That said, this is a moving story of a homeless man and his dog. When the man realizes he is dying--and the dog realizes that as well-- he tries to find someone to take his dog. It's always a desperate time for a dog when he/she loses his "master." That comes across strongly in this story, especially as the dog is on his own looking for someone to take care of him. Sad? Yes, but at least he did have that wonderful relationship with the man....for a time....

Stop Press!
This is not your typical Paul Auster book. This is what Paul Auster books would be like if he suddenly decided the murky world of convoluted, maze-like po-mo literature was not for him and thought "I know, I'll write a nice book for children." Except this is a nice a book for adults.

I was suckered in by the picture of the moist-eyed dog on the cover and the fact that this is on the 1001 books to read before you die list meant that of course I was going to read it. I'm pretty sure this comes under the Marmite book category (vegemite if you live in the upside down part of the world) where you either love it or hate it. In fact the only way to make it more of a Marmite read would be to toast it, smear the cover in butter and then apply a generous lashing of the aforementioned brewer's yeast by-product.

This book is written from a dogs perspective and the narrative voice is that of a dog. I'm definitely a dog person so loved the idea of a book written through a canine perception of the world. Sadly this view point is given minus the cat chasing, butt licking and rolling in other dogs poop (why do dogs do that?) which whilst slightly more sanitary, does seem like a glaring omission. Mr Bones is the loving side-kick of urban camper Willy G Christmas. Willy G is not long for the world and Mr Bones soon finds himself alone on the mean streets of... well the mean streets - I'm pretty sure dogs are not bothered about geography given that they use their noses as sat-navs and different kinds of other dog pee as road signs. A dog-day musing on life, death, friendship, suicide and whether or not we ever get to see our loveable pooches again once we kick the bucket. Personally I hope we do, although in heaven I am anticipating that my deceased capering canine (who in life went by the name of Buster or The Pog) will have been provided with Sminty fresh breath and a drool-control mechanism.

CRITIQUE:

The Call of Domesticity

When Dad was a little boy, he loved a book called "The Call of the Wild". It was about a dog called Buck that was taken away from his home and sold to strangers. The author, apparently, was protesting against the "humanisation" of animals. In the author's mind, the dog did not think about doing any of the things he wrote about in the book, he merely did them. It wasn't directed by abstract reasoning, but by instinct, sensation, and emotion, and by simple reasoning. (1) The dog was most at home, and most dignified, in the wild, not in domesticity, at the beck and call of humans.

Nevertheless, when he read the book, Dad started a life-long ambition: he wanted to have a dog, ironically, at home. Not through any sympathy with the plight of dogs, Dad's parents never bought him a dog. They didn't want to be responsible for taking care of it.

When Dad got married to Mum, and they had two daughters, they, too, wanted to have a dog. But like his parents, Dad said no. Ironically, in the quest for a dog, Dad compromised little by little, first buying gold fish, then guinea pigs. They were no match for a dog, but, in a way, they were training, a kind of experiment to see whether Claudie and Lily could and would take care of their pets. The experiment didn't necessarily prove anything, but sooner or later, Mum and Dad went to a pet shop and bought me. They thought I was the cutest dog in the shop, and so did their daughters when they brought me home.

I was never a wild dog, I never bit anybody or anything, I soon learned all of my lessons, even though I continued to bark at anybody who passed our front gate. I always let Mum and Dad know if any robbers were near. They thought I was a good guard dog, but in reality I couldn't differentiate between the pedestrians who passed our home. Some were neighbours or lived in the street, and were just walking to the bus stop or the shops. Some had parked their car in the street, and were walking to the hospital where they worked. But the ones I barked loudest at, were the ones who had dogs of their own. I barked at them, and they barked back. Everybody thought we were mad dogs, but we were just playing a dog game with each other. Eventually, the other dogs' masters would take a different route and avoid our gate. I didn't have to bark as much, which was a relief.

Even so, a dog's life continued to be tiring, and I needed to sleep a lot, even during the day. I still needed to sleep at night, and Mum and Dad let me sleep at their feet, on the big bed. Although they think I'm pretty cute, I am a little lazy, and I'm always the last out of bed in the morning.

I might be lazy, but I still love it when Dad takes me for a walk in the afternoon. We used to start at 4pm, but bit by bit we've started earlier. Dad thinks it's because I love going for a walk with him, but it's really because I love the treats he gives me when we get home, so it's my way of getting to eat my treats earlier in the day.

The problem is that, if I have my treats early, I get hungry again the same day, and I need to have my dinner and my dinner treats. Mum gets annoyed with me, and won't let me have any more until an hour later. If I whimper enough, Dad will weaken and give me some more treats. It's not very noble of me, but I get what I need. Well, I get what I want, anyway.

Sometimes, Mum and Dad go away in the car and leave me at home by myself. I don't know where they go, although sometimes Mum comes back with plastic bags. Some of the bags have my food in them, I know, because I can smell my food, even if it's still in cardboard packaging. My nose still works, as if I lived in the wild.

Dad likes to go for a long walk every morning. He doesn't take me, because that's when I'm still sleeping in bed. He takes some treats with him, which I assume he gives to other dogs he meets on the way. I can tell, because I can smell other dogs on his legs, but most of all I can smell where he has had the treats in a pouch around his stomach.

Dad also likes reading books. Until recently, none of these books had been about animals, but he has just read two animal books in a row, one was about cats, and this book was about a dog. The dog was called Mr. Bones (aka Cal and Sparky), and he seemed to think and talk like a human. He wasn't wild at all. I don't know why humans think a talking dog is special. All dogs can talk. It's just that not all humans can hear or understand us.

Mr Bones had a number of owners. The first was Willy G. Christmas, who ended up dying. Willy tried to take him to an old lady who used to teach English to him, so she could take care of him when he (Willy) died and went to Timbuktu (his name for Heavens above). Instead, a Chinese boy called Henry Chow found him on the street and took him home, although he didn't let his parents know that he had found a dog. He thought they would make him take it to the pound. I've never been to a pound, but the other dogs I've spoken to have always said, you don't want to end up in the pound. They don't give you all the food you need, like your home parents would. A pound is a bit like having a bad owner who won't take care of you properly. Some owners even hurt their dogs. Why would you hurt a dog, let alone your own dog?

Hold on, I think I smelled Dad coming in through the front gate. I have to go now. I'll try to meet him out the front. With any luck, he might have a treat left for me. Besides, I don't want him to find out that I've been typing on his computer. He thinks he's the one who writes all these reviews on GoodReads.

Ciao,
Charlie Gronson

鈥淭hat's all I've ever dreamed of, Mr. Bones. To make the world a better place. To bring some beauty to the drab, humdrum corners of the soul. You can do it with a toaster, you can do it with a poem, you can do it by reaching out your hand to a stranger. It doesn't matter what form it takes. To leave the world a little better than you found it. That's the best a man can ever do.鈥

鈥淗e slipped away slowly, withdrawing from this world by small, imperceptible degrees, and in the end it was as if he were a drop of water evaporating in the sun, shrinking and shrinking until at last he wasn鈥檛 there anymore.鈥

鈥... love was not a quantifiable substance. There was always more of it somewhere, and even after one love had been lost, it was by no means impossible to find another.鈥

听听

No he le铆do muchos libros del autor pero comparado con los otros, este es diferente. 听

Quiz谩 no sea el mejor libro del autor pues sigo viendo rese帽as muy favorables de otros que a煤n no he le铆do, pero desde luego me costar谩 olvidar a este can, lo vivido con 茅l y el final semiabierto del libro. 听

I have had this book on my shelves for a number of years, but despite being a fan of many of Auster's books, I had failed to read it due to the premise of it being written from the point of view of a dog-ludicrous surely? When I saw the book available as Audible's Daily Deal for $3 I thought it was worth checking to see if this was the case, and I'm pleased to say that it was quite the opposite.

As a massive dog lover, it quickly became apparent that I was going to empathise with the character of scruffy mongrel Mr Bones, and I quickly found myself relating my own wee dog's traits to his. When his original owner, Willy Christmas, an equally scruffy and mentally unstable character, passes away, we follow the dog as he wanders Baltimore's streets in search of a new owner, and interacts with a number of different humans.

Auster does a superb job in portraying canine characteristics from the point of view of Mr Bones' stream of consciousness, without being too fantastical or patronising. I was gripped by the story, and found myself laughing out loud at times, and at the edge of my seat at others, as the mutt went about his business. Of course, we find out about the human characters in the novel via their interactions with Mr Bones or their interactions with each other in his presence, but it's definitely the mongrel who is the star.

I couldn't stop myself listening on to finish this book in a couple of days. It's definitely one that I'll return to in future!

Paul: a sto鈥 giro non mi hai fatto impazzire, diciamocelo!
