asked:
I saw 'Animal abuse' in the content warning. Is it just one sentence or one page? Or, a complete paragraph, chapter or recurring theme that I would not be able to skip? No details please :) just trying to decide whether to read this one or not. It looks like a good book, but I can't bear to read about animal abuse. Thanks in advance to anyone with the answer.

Just because someone asks about animal abuse doesn't mean they think human abuse is fine, I'm not sure why people **ALWAYS** comment this!! Some of us have trauma specifically related to animal abuse - please consider this before commenting something sarcastic, good grief.
Rachel Kohlbrenner
The animal abuse that definitely will be a trigger for many is in chapter 26. You can skip that chapter and you will be fine with not really missing anything. It is an incredible book worth reading!

This book is so beautifully written. And there are some seriously brutal scenes that caused me to pause and wonder if I should go on. Just REALLY rough stuff. But then I got to page 261. And I've decided I'm done. She's incredibly talented, her writing is poetic, but I just can't push forward through some of the traumatic content.

I had to quit the book because there are multiple instances of innocent animals dying (some of the other comments seem to be forgetting the dog poisoned near the beginning of the book). That, with the horrible things that happen to the people, made me quit the book, and it takes a lot for me to quit a book.

No I would not read this part. I had to skip. Too much

I've never skipped part of a novel before but I had to forward through the kitten scene, it was unbearable for me. It comes up later in the story but you'll have the gist and don't need to read awful details. Overall all it is incredible writing and story telling. I think Manu's words, "brutal and beautiful" perfectly describe it.
Manu
This book partly deals with HUMAN abuse so excuse me, Allison, but if you think the abuse suffered by human beings in this book (or in real life for that matter) is more tolerable than any form of animal abuse, indeed, I would strongly advise against you reading one page of this brutal and beautiful book!!! It's definitely not for you... As far as I'm concerned, I'm so glad I have it on my bedside table. I'm so happy to start 2021 with it!

There is a LOT of animal abuse and multiple instances. I would avoid if I were you.

This chapter was really difficult to read for me. I was haunted by it for a little while... Skip it, for sure. And I don't agree with people comparing the human and animal abuse because for me the animal abuse was worse (just in the raw circumstances) sorry.
Taryn Boyd
If you skip chapter 26 you get the gist without the graphic details. Once I realized what I was in to I skipped the chapter and felt like I missed nothing

If you find reading about animal abuse hard avoid this book like the plague as it occurs throughout. The cat scene is horrific and I wish I’d never read it. The whole book is bleak and the lyrical writing doesn’t make up for the trauma throughout, it’s not worth the sadness.
Rosemary Beau
There was a fairly short episode with animal abuse. Always very difficult but it's a novel. There are other more abusive events happening on a human level.
Kathy Ross
I just skipped over the kitten scene. Simply too brutal for me to read.
Linda
I very nearly quit reading after one of the human abuse scenes, but persevered hoping the perpetrator would get his comeuppance. After more awful human abuse and then the cat situation, I bailed. I could tell that there was more to come.
