“The closer you looked at Los Angeles, the less sense the place made. Living here was like living inside a confusing dream that threatened to plunge into a nightmare at any moment. Richie viewed LA as their salvation, but Alabama saw the truth: It wanted to consume them.”
Philip Elliott, Porno Valley

Kristian Ventura
“Freedom sounds phenomenal to the preoccupied young. But when one is an adult and has 鈥渇ree days鈥 there is simply not much to do. Even in Los Angeles, where everything was. There was an unspoken spell of solitude cast on the city. Once one has been to the main parts of town, and had their fair share at the beach, Los Angeles turned unbreathably lonely. The biggest risks took place in grocery stores where a quiet shopper chose to switch to multi-grain bread after two years on sourdough. One could use their afternoons to create art鈥 maybe writing a poem or painting a picture鈥攁ll of which pass time but are isolating activities in and of themselves. The child begs for freedom and the adult wants to be told what to do.”
Karl Kristian Flores, A Happy Ghost

Matt Haig
“Dac膬 urm膬re葯ti s膬 devii ceva ce nu e葯ti, vei da gre葯 卯ntotdeauna. Fii tu 卯nsu葲i. Arat膬, comport膬-te natural 葯i g芒nde葯te cu mintea ta. Fii cea mai sincer膬 variant膬 a ta. Accept膬-葲i eul. Sus葲ine-l. Iube葯te-l. Str膬duie葯te-te pentru el. Nu te abate atunci c芒nd oamenii 卯l iau 卯n r芒s sau 卯l batjocoresc. Cele mai multe b芒rfe ascund invidii. 葰ine capul aplecat. P膬streaz膬-葲i energia.”
Matt Haig, The Midnight Library

Philip Elliott
“Most men think the most difficult part of being a porn star is having sex for so long without ejaculating. They鈥檙e right but for the wrong reason. It鈥檚 having sex for so long and then ejaculating that鈥檚 the problem. Porn becomes a job like any other pretty quick. Then it鈥檚 all about maintaining the erection and being ready to fire on command. It鈥檚 not easy, believe me.”
Philip Elliott, Porno Valley

Philip Elliott
“Hollywood Boulevard at night was a dream in neon. Mickey cruised along the strip, colorful lights blurring by like hallucinations. On his right, the El Capitan Theatre lured customers in like a Vegas casino, while the Walk of Fame preserved stardom on his left. Tourists bustled beneath the blinking signs like extras in the giant story of this land of stories, hoping for a real-life glimpse of that other world just behind the veneer of this place. In the 鈥50s, Hollywood Boulevard had looked different鈥攍ess buildings, less vehicles, less pedestrians鈥攂ut the aura of the strip, the energy, hadn鈥檛 changed at all.”
Philip Elliott, Porno Valley

Philip Elliott
“Cruising down Compton Boulevard in the Catalina, Mickey sensed the charged atmosphere of the place, an energy that said anything could happen. Young men loitered in groups on the sidewalks in baggy T-shirts and bandannas while young women strolled up and down, smirking at the men hollering after them and whistling. When traffic lights turned red, blank-faced children appeared out of the darkness under overpasses like wraiths to sell drugs to drivers. Prostitutes wobbled along the streets on high heels, many of them with the vacant gaze of the addicted, while men with hard hearts and a lust for blood watched their every move. All the while well-intentioned families who called Compton home got ground up in the giant machine of this nation, slipping further toward poverty and the tragic moment when pressing need overtakes good intentions.

Even still, Compton was no longer what it once was. Ten years ago, Mickey might not have driven through it, and certainly wouldn鈥檛 have stopped and wandered around. But the homicide rate had decreased steadily since 鈥94, down to forty-eight murders in 鈥98 from a peak of eighty-seven in 鈥91, and small businesses were slowly but surely returning to the city. It bothered Mickey deeply that the state of California, with an economy greater than that of most countries, wouldn鈥檛 help these people, or that the federal government of the United States, the richest country in the history of the world, wouldn鈥檛 help them either, instead spending hundreds of billions of dollars per year on warfare and destruction. The people of Compton could be lifted from poverty with the signing of a bill, and it was no wonder, when you got right down to it, why so many had resorted to crime.”
Philip Elliott, Porno Valley

Philip Elliott
“Nobody knows Los Angeles until they鈥檝e been entranced by it, corrupted by it, cast out from it, and returned to it on their knees begging it to save them, and Richie knew Los Angeles. He knew it better than anyone. This time he would tame the beast and make it his own鈥攖his time he would win.”
Philip Elliott, Porno Valley

Tony Horwitz
“For [Beth] Davis, Fitzgerald's [Louisiana] story carried another, broader message for Americans. 'If veterans could come together so soon after the War and forgive and forget, then surely we can overcome our differences,' she said. 'Old wounds were healed here, old barriers overcome. Seems like we should be able to do the same.”
Tony Horwitz

“I never thought about a job in astronomy until I saw a job advert advertising one. It was in the Canary Islands, working for the UK Government鈥檚 Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC). Wow! That sounded so cool! I applied, got flown out for an interview on the island and took the job. I felt like I had won the lottery, as I was being paid to do something I was interested in and living on the beautiful island of La Palma. I started my career fixing broken vacuum cleaners at the city hospital, it was quite a change!”
Steven Magee, Magee鈥檚 Disease

Steven Magee
“If you want to make the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT) management team uncomfortable, you ask this question: Could you direct me to the medical research papers that document the long term illnesses, diseases, and deaths in all of the La Palma and Mauna Kea summit staff (current and past employees) since they started operation?”
Steven Magee

Steven Magee
“A lot of people in La Palma live thousands of feet above sea level and regularly altitude commute daily.”

“The island of La Palma in the Canary Islands is really steep.”

Kristian Ventura
“Why are you leaving Los Angeles?' asked Andrei.

'Something about the city. People don鈥檛 want to see each other. Everything鈥檚 too far away. A bunch of reasons. On sidewalks everyone avoids each other; it鈥檚 weird to go up to someone. Most of all, the weather鈥檚 a lie. Too much sun, and then everyone acts like the sun. You know what I mean? There鈥檚 so much to do, but no one to do it with.”
Karl Kristian Flores, A Happy Ghost

Daniel Ruczko
“LA, the city where everyone鈥檚 constantly waiting for their phone to ring, and I鈥檓 part of it.”

“Molt sovint sembla que les situacions d'un mateix signe s'ajuntin; vull dir que, quan comences a tenir mala sort i comencen a passar-te coses dolentes, et fa l'efecte que tot plegat no s'ha d'acabar mai i que, facis el que facis, qualsevol cosa t'hagi de sortir malament. I, un bon dia, les circumst脿ncies canvien sense que et puguis explicar com. A partir d'aquell moment, tot comen莽a a rutllar i sembla que el vent et vagi a favor.”
Gemma Lienas, As铆 es la vida, Carlota

“La vida, de fet, ens er aun circ permanent.”
Manuel Joan i Ariny贸

“This jury told the world that what we all saw with our own eyes wasn鈥檛 a crime. Today, that jury asked us to accept the senseless and brutal beating of a helpless man. Today, that same jury said that we should tolerate such conduct by those who are sworn to protect and serve. My friends, I鈥檓 here to tell this jury: No. No, our eyes did not deceive us. We saw what we saw, and what we saw was a crime.”
Tom Bradley
