“I missed him with an intensity that made his absence painful and his return a celebration. In the dark or the light, in the great hall or in our bedchamber, he was gruff but gentle, arrogant yet attentive, and he made love with a ferocity and focus that made it impossible not to bend myself to his will, even as I found ways to challenge and defy him.”

“A lark, caught in a hunter鈥檚 net
Sang sweeter then than ever,
As if the falling melody
Might wing and net dissever
At dusk the hunter took his prey,
The lark his freedom never.
All birds and men are sure to die
But songs may live forever.”

“A lark began to sing in the tree above her. Dortchen opened her eyes and looked up. It was such a small, plain, grey thing, yet its song was so full of joy. She could see its breast swell, its thin throat tremble. It lifted its wings, as if seeking to draw more air into its lungs. Song-notes were flung into the air, like golden coins thrown by a generous hand. All the lark's strength was poured into its music, all its joy.
Dortchen took a deep breath, so deep that she felt her lungs expand and the muscles of her chest crack. She wanted to live like the lark did, filled with rapture. She stood up, looking up at the bird through the sunlit leaves. It flung its wings wide and soared away into the sky. She wanted to fly with it.”

Lark, also called early chronotype, is someone who does usually wake up very early. They are most active during morning around 6:00 am. Approximately 10% of people are larks.
Owl, also called late chronotype, is someome who does usually wake up very late. They are most active in the evening around 6:00 pm. They usually drink a lot of coffee and accumulate a massive sleep debt as they go through life. Approximately 10% of people are owls.
The rest, around 80% of people, are hummingbirds. Some hummingbirds are more larkish, some more owlish and some are in between.”

“Lark wrapped an arm around me and started to speak until Bailey鈥檚 startled voice interrupted us. A huge football player had her pinned against the wall and she was yelling for him to back off. Instead, he crowded her more while playing with her blonde hair.
鈥淗ey!鈥 I yelled as Lark and I rushed over.
Six four and wide shouldered, the guy was wasted and angry at the interruption. 鈥淔uck off, bitches,鈥 he muttered.
Bailey clawed at his neck, but he had her pinned in a weird way, so she couldn鈥檛 get any leverage.
While I was ready to jump on him in a weak attempt to save my friend, someone shoved the football player off Bailey. I hadn鈥檛 even seen the guy appear, but he stood between Bailey and the pissed jerk.
鈥淔uck off, man,鈥 the asshole said. 鈥淪he鈥檚 mine.鈥
鈥淣ick,鈥 Bailey mumbled, looking ready to cry. 鈥淗e humped my leg. Crush his skull, will ya?鈥
Nick frowned at Bailey who was leaning on him now.
The football player was an inch or two bigger than Nick and outweighed him by probably fifty pounds. Feeling the fight would be short, the asshole reached for Bailey鈥檚 arm and Nick nailed the guy in the face. To my shock, the giant asshole collapsed on the ground.
鈥淢y hero,鈥 Bailey said, looking ready to puke. She caressed Nick鈥檚 biceps and asked, 鈥淒o you work out?鈥
Running his hands through his dark wavy hair, Nick laughed. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e so wasted.鈥
鈥淎nd you鈥檙e like the Energizer Bunny,鈥 she cooed. 鈥淢y bro said you took a punch, yet kept on ticking.鈥
Nick started to speak then heard the asshole鈥檚 friends riled up.
I was too drunk to know if everything happened really quickly or if my brain just took awhile to catch up.
The guys rushed Nick who dodged most of them and hit another. The room emptied out except for Nick, the guys, and us. I grabbed a beer bottle and threw it at one of the guys shoving Nick.
When the bottle hit him in the back, the bastard glared at me. 鈥淵ou want to fight, bitch?鈥
鈥淟eave her alone,鈥 Nick said, kicking one guy into the jerk looking to hit me.
As impressive as Nick was against six guys, he was just one guy against six. A losing bet, he took a shot to the face then the gut. Lark grabbed a folding chair and went WWE on one guy. I was tossing beers in the roundabout direction of the other guys. Yet, Bailey was the one who ended the fight by pulling out a gun.
鈥淏ack the fuck off or I鈥檒l burn this motherfucking house to the ground!鈥 she screamed then fired at a lamp. Everyone stopped and stared at her. When she noticed me wide-eyed, Bailey frowned. 鈥淭oo much?鈥
Grinning, I followed Lark to the door. Nick followed us while the assholes seemed ready to piss themselves. Well, except for an idiot who looked ready to go for Bailey鈥檚 gun.
"Dude,鈥 Nick muttered, 鈥渢hat鈥檚 Bailey Fucking Johansson. Unless you want to end up in a shallow grave, back the fuck off.鈥
鈥淲hat he said!鈥 Bailey yelled, waving her gun around before I hurried her out of the door. The cold air sobered up Bailey enough for her to return the gun to her purse. She was still drunk enough to laugh hysterically as we reached the SUV.
鈥淒id you see me kill that lamp?鈥
鈥淵ou did good,鈥 I said, groggy as my adrenaline shifted to nausea and the alcohol threatened to come back up on me.
Nick walked us to the SUV. 鈥淣ext time, you might want to wave the gun around before you get drunk and dance.鈥
鈥淒on鈥檛 tell me what to do,鈥 Bailey growled, crawling into the backseat. Then, realizing he saved her, she crawled back to face him. 鈥淵ou were so brave. I should totally get you off as a thank you."
鈥淢aybe another time,鈥 he said, laughing as she batted her eyes at him. 鈥淎re you guys safe to drive?鈥
Lark nodded. 鈥淚鈥檓 sober enough to remember everything tomorrow. Trust me that there鈥檒l be mocking.”

“Fly away,鈥 sang little lark to the crow,
鈥淭here is no home for you
Among the broken promises and empty hearts. We drew
the life we never mourned, away with fading dark.
Your wings are fashioned from the cold, mindless lies
of feathers tarred with pitch!”

“Ignoring all the whispering couples around him, Vaughn taught me to bowl while I faked like I cared. We were both on the outs and I suspected he wanted to find a new buddy now that Judd was attached to his angel. Every time Tawny laughed, Vaughn鈥檚 frown darkened.
鈥淵ou should be happy for them,鈥 I said as he guided me towards the alley.
鈥淚 am. Fucking overwhelmed with happiness. Now, pay attention.鈥 When I flinched at his tone, Vaughn sighed. 鈥淚t gets boring when your best friend is busy mating like a rabbit.鈥
鈥淢y best friend ditched me too, so I found new friends. Maybe you should too.鈥
鈥淐rap no. Sounds like too much effort.鈥
I grinned. 鈥淵ou could play with Bailey. Here, she comes.鈥
Vaughn didn鈥檛 even glance at the arriving blonde who threw her hands in the air. 鈥淚 got dumped again! Men suck! I hate them all!鈥 she cried, enjoying a hug from Tawny. 鈥淲ho wants to set me up now?鈥
鈥淚 thought you hated men,鈥 Tucker mumbled with his mouth full of a hot dog.
鈥淚 do, but one of them has got to work, right? Everyone in the world gets someone good, but I get shit. It鈥檚 not fair. I鈥檓 nicer than anyone ever.鈥
This comment elicited laughter from the crew including Vaughn who took my bowling ball and rolled it for me.
鈥淟ook,鈥 he said,鈥 you got a strike. I鈥檓 an excellent teacher.鈥
鈥淏est ever.”

“Where did you get your tat?鈥
鈥淎aron鈥檚 shop. You want to get a tat?鈥 he asked, grinning as if this was hilarious.
鈥淚 have one,鈥 I said, rolling the ball into the gutter. 鈥淚t鈥檚 not finished though.鈥
鈥淗ow come?鈥
鈥淢y brother interrupted the tattoo and I never had the money to get it done again.鈥
鈥淣o, I meant how come you鈥檙e such a bad bowler? Is it genetic?鈥 he asked. 鈥淟ike do you come from a long line of people who can鈥檛 make a ball roll in a straight line?鈥

“What are we talking about?鈥 Tawny asked as Judd rolled a ball, knocked over a few pins, then frowned like he might knock the others over with his angry glare.
鈥淎aron鈥檚 going to fix her tat,鈥 Bailey explained while Cooper and Farah wandered off.
鈥淗e鈥檚 an artist,鈥 Tawny cooed. 鈥淗e made this angel on Judd.鈥
After Tawny showed me Judd鈥檚 arm, she put her hand back to where she had a gorgeous tattoo of a fallen angel. 鈥淗e鈥檚 very talented,鈥 she added.
鈥淚鈥檓 excited to get my butterfly finished.鈥
鈥淗e鈥檒l do a great job,鈥 Bailey reassured, taking a ball from Vaughn and rolling it into the wrong alley. 鈥淥ops.鈥
鈥泪诲颈辞迟.鈥
鈥淏e nice or I won鈥檛 be nice,鈥 Bailey warned, glaring up at him.
鈥淚 love feisty women,鈥 he said, smirking down at her.
鈥淣ot interested. Blond men are usually stupid. Just look at my brothers. Anyway, I don鈥檛 want a dumbass loser. I want a smartass winner.鈥
鈥淵ou deserve nothing less,鈥 I said and Bailey smiled at me like I was amazing.”

“Stumbling to my feet, I glanced at my mom who still sat at the table. She looked at me then Larry then lowered her gaze and returned to her coupons. The logical choice for me was to run from the house. I was so much smaller than these three battling men and the smart thing was to run. Yet, Larry and his bullshit family were why Raven left. They were always telling me what to do and making me feel like shit. Now, he鈥檇 hit me and I wasn鈥檛 running.
Grabbing a chair from the table, I swung it at Glenn and hit him at the back of the neck. As he went flying forward, the bastard tripped over Dylan and toppled hard to the ground.
Before I could celebrate, Larry ripped the chair out of my hand then came at me. I backed away and grabbed one of the millions of bear figurines. Throwing it at him, I nailed Larry in the chest with the first one. The second one caught him over the eye, leaving a gash.
As Larry chased me around the room, I grabbed more bears and flung them over my shoulders at him. While most missed, a few made contact and he finally hollered in frustration.
Having recovered from the blow, Glenn tried to block me in. However, Dylan shoved the older man outside then locked the door. Unfortunately for Glenn, Larry鈥檚 stupid fluffy dog hated him and proceeded to attack his leg.
鈥淒ylan, this is your last chance,鈥 Larry said, his face red and blood dripping down his face. 鈥淕ive me that girl or you鈥檙e done.鈥
鈥淔uck you. I was done the minute you put your fucking hand on her.鈥
Watching the two men glare at one another, I exchanged the bears in my hands for heavier ones. 鈥淚鈥檓 leaving,鈥 I said more to Mom than Larry. 鈥淚f anyone messes with me, I鈥檓 cracking their heads open with Picnic Bear.”

“Bailey sat on the edge of the couch and fed Maddy grapes. The very swollen mommy-to-be initially complained about being fed like a pet. Eventually, she gave in and enjoyed the attention. Not to be outdone, Sawyer turned a fan towards Maddy and was painting her nails. I watched them baby her and wondered about when I would be that big and uncomfortable.
鈥淚鈥檓 in no hurry to have a baby,鈥 Tawny said, maybe for the tenth time since arriving. 鈥淣ot in any hurry at all.鈥
Farah grinned from where she was cutting carrots into little perfect sticks for dipping. 鈥淐oop is obsessed with getting me pregnant. First, his little brother is about to have a baby then his best friend. I swear whenever we鈥檙e alone, he鈥檚 inside me,鈥 she said then her smile grew. 鈥淚t鈥檚 awesome.鈥
鈥淗uh,鈥 Tawny muttered. 鈥淛udd is in me all the time too and not because he鈥檚 trying to plant his flag or lay his seed or whatever.鈥
鈥淛ealous?鈥 Farah asked and Tawny fake glared at her.
鈥淪ometimes, my sister irritates me too,鈥 I said and they both laughed.
鈥淚鈥檓 going to brush the baby鈥檚 hair,鈥 Bailey announced to no one in particular. 鈥淲hen she鈥檚 old enough, I鈥檓 going to put those little barrettes in her hair and make her wear headbands and turn her into a doll. Then when she cries, I鈥檓 giving her back to Maddy.鈥
鈥淵eah for me,鈥 Maddy whispered with her eyes closed.
鈥淎re you suffering?鈥 Bailey asked. 鈥淟ike should I do more for you to ease away the horror of how huge you鈥檝e become?鈥
Opening her eyes a crack, Maddy muttered, 鈥淪top charming me.鈥
Bailey grinned. 鈥淪eriously, you look pretty miserable today.鈥
鈥淚鈥檝e been having those Braxton Hicks contractions since yesterday.鈥
鈥淚s that bad?鈥 Sawyer asked, looking up from her meticulous work on Maddy鈥檚 toes. 鈥淚s it like hemorrhoids?鈥
When we laughed, Sawyer beamed, even though she likely had no idea what was funny.
鈥淭hey鈥檙e like practice contractions,鈥 Maddy explained. 鈥淭hey don鈥檛 hurt much, but they鈥檙e uncomfortable.鈥
Bailey frowned. 鈥淗ow do you know all this stuff?鈥
鈥淚 read a book.鈥
鈥淵eah, I did that once. Not a fan.鈥
鈥淵ou guys don鈥檛 have to hang out here,鈥 Maddy said. 鈥淭he guys are out having fun and you鈥檙e pampering me. You could go to the movies if you want.鈥
鈥淣o,鈥 Bailey said quickly. 鈥淚 need to be super nice because I had a dream that being nice will lead to a handsome awesome guy who is the fucker. I want that guy. He belongs to me and I鈥檓 sick of waiting, so shut up and let me be nice to you.鈥
鈥淪ure,鈥 Maddy said, sighing. 鈥淭his is nice, but I鈥檓 going to have to pee soon.鈥

“I remained with Lark in the hospital room until Aaron arrived out of breath from running.
鈥淢y muse,鈥 he said, taking her hand.
Leaving them alone to prepare for the surgery, I walked into the waiting room. Cooper patted the chair next to him and I joined him.
鈥淪he鈥檒l be okay,鈥 he said, sounding convincing.
I didn鈥檛 feel like talking, so I texted Dylan, Harlow, Mom, and Dad to let them know what was happening. Cooper spoke quietly on the phone with Farah who was on her way with Tawny.
First, Dick and Maryann arrived then Raven not long afterwards with Bailey.
鈥淲e were shopping when you called,鈥 Bailey announced as Raven hurried to Lark鈥檚 room.
Joining her brother, Bailey tapped her foot and stared at the door. 鈥淗ow long will it take?鈥
