I appreciated a lot of the points and how concisely they were made, but I'm tired of books that start each chapter with a anecdotal tale that somehow relates to whatever point they are trying to make that chapter. When really...do they?
Having listened to a lot of podcasts/YT segments on finance and coming from a minimalism mindset, none of these concepts were new to me. Although a reminder is always nice.
Essentially, I thought the last two chapters and the historical context segment after them were the most interesting. You could really just read those and get all the value the book has to offer. ...more
I had to read this for work. Nothing that original, which the author disclaims in the beginning…a lot of trite platitudes. Still, it was decent, with I had to read this for work. Reviewing this book in a way that seems appropriate feels like a heavy lift that I'm just not capable of doing right now...and it's been a minute since I've read this, so I just want to get something down before this turns into an "RTC" in perpetuity review. So off we go...I apologize in advance for how crappy I'm sure this will be.
I was excited to read this because - to be blunt - I basically wanted to be able to speak intelligently about something I already believe: that social media is evil.
And before I get slammed for the hypocrisy of posting this here, hold your horses.
I am aware that goodreads is technically a social media site. But it's not Tik Tok. It's not Instagram. It's not YouTube.
Can it be just as destructive as any of those if someone gets overly invested and attached? Sure.
But for the purposes of this review - and much like Haidt did in this book - when I reference social media, I am referring mainly to all the Tik Toks and Instagrams out there.
Cause they are the parasites that are truly contributing to the ever-increasing rotting of our society. And yes, I really believe that. Just like I believed giving everyone a participation trophy was a bad idea back in the early 2000s.
Do I think social media has its upsides? infinitesimally. And definitely not enough to offset the downsides. Cause our brains and minds were not meant to operate this way. It's just that simple.
I thought the way Haidt unpacked the critical milestones and transitions periods of childhood was very well said and well researched. And the way he compared pre-smart phone childhoods to post-smart phone childhoods was very interesting.
I very much enjoyed the earlier and middle portions of this book overall. As I stated above, everything was very well-stated and well-researched. I did think some parts were a bit redundant. And his solution plan...while admirable and logical...I just don't know how it would get it done, sadly.
Regardless, I think this is a must read, especially for parents.
Mental Illness, narcissism, and just an overall failure to launch has because an appropriate norm. And it's scary. Your friends and followers don't need to see every meal you ate on vacation or how many times you breathed in and out today. And they don't need a daily discourse about the status of your mental health. Stop navel-gazing. Seriously. It's ridiculous. We need to all get a grip and get the fuck off our phones....more

I was raised on standup comedy and have always loved Maria Bamford's quirky AF delivery/shtick.
If you love Bamford's comedy like I do, you will most likely enjoy this a lot. Conversely, if you are unfamiliar with Bamford and her comedic style, you might not. As I said, she is quirky AF.
I inhaled this via audio book, which again, if you are familiar with Bamford's style, you will agree with my belief that this is how this book will be most enjoyed as Bamford narrates herself. If you know, you know.
But I digress.
I enjoyed this a lot. Bamford tackles some tough subjects with her usual humor. Bamford fans will enjoy. ...more

I am almost the same exact age as Britney, so I feel like we grew up together. I was very much a fan of her, NSYNC, Christina Aguilera, Backstreet...basically ALL the chart topping pop performers and bands of that time and genre (among others too, mind you). I remember having so much teenage envy for her life and her romance with Justin Timberlake.
Obviously we all watched from the outside as her life has unfolded since that time, whatever our perceptions.
This book reminded me that fame and fortune are not all they are cracked up to be. Britney has been treated like a cash register show pony for so many years of her life. Like a commodity of the world. The way she was targeted and treated by the media was virtually criminal.
Shame on the paparazzi. Shame on people like Diane Sawyer. Shame on all of us for creating the demand that prompted this treatment of another human being.
Who knows what the truth of anything really is...but this book is Britney's perception of her life and the ways things played out. And based on this book and just watching her story in the media for many years, it definitely seems like Britney has never (or at least not for many years) really had anyone in her life who wasn't there for ulterior motives. And that makes me sad for her.
I'm really happy she finally got to tell her story. I hope she finds happiness. ...more

I love biographies/memoirs about musicians and have read some really good ones that made me love the artist even more...but I have also read a couple that turned me off so much, it tainted their previously loved music for me. Which is silly, but it is what it is...Regardless, it definitely makes me go into each biography with a small sense of trepidation now.
And this one was huge. Because, like many, I was a child of the 90's, I LOVED Nirvana, and I vividly remember when Kurt Cobain died. I also went on to love the Foo Fighters and just have a lot of respect for Dave Grohl as a musician. I'll never forget his Grammy award acceptance speech in 2012:
“To me this award means a lot because it shows that the human element of music is what’s important. Singing into a microphone and learning to play an instrument and learning to do your craft, that’s the most important thing for people to do It’s not about being perfect, it’s not about sounding absolutely correct, it’s not about what goes on in a computer. It’s about what goes on in here [your heart] and what goes on in here [your head].
I just loved everything about what he said.
So, as I said, I was nervous about reading this and it tainting Nirvana, Foo, and DG for me.
But I should have trusted in the Dave.
What an amazing human being. He just seems like such a great guy and I loved that he narrated this himself (thus my choice to consume this one via audio book).
He manages to talk about people with whom his had issue or who had demons and struggles without any negativity or judgment. And that's really a special skill and says a lot about him as person. I also really liked how this wasn't a strict chronological accounting of his life and experiences, but a collection of stories that showed rather than told.
