I had a bit of a love/hate relationship with this novel. Unlike the previous one, which seemed slightly easy in comparison, this one had a lot of features that I've grown to hate over the years.

Such as? Action buildups that suddenly cut to long and unasked for history lessons and expositions that sometimes, eventually, bring out an aspect of the story that will, also eventually, fit right into the tale. Unfortunately for me, it kicks me right out of the telling and I've got to reign in all my enormous reserves of patience until the action starts back up again, which, unfortunately, takes a long ass time. And these were rather dull.

I won't say they were pointless, because we eventually get the wraparound and the bow on top, BUT at the time, I'm left wondering where the main characters are and what any of this has to do with the main story we've begun with. Which, by that point, I'd pretty much forgotten, anyway.

Sounds pretty damning, doesn't it?

Well wait a moment. I'd have perfectly loved the hell out of this book if all that extraneous stuff had been omitted or condensed into footnotes or incorporated in MUCH smaller or at least story-integrated ways, and not as hijackers on the plane of my enjoyment.

So honestly, whenever we got back to Myfanwy, Felicity, or Odette, I was fully enjoying the tale again. Hell, it was a very good tale, and not to give away story twists, it's very satisfying on the emotional, strategical, and diplomatic angles.

I really enjoyed learning all about the big bads of the previous book and enjoyed even more to sympathize and empathize with the Grafters. What first appeared to be a simple and weird exploration of biological scariness became a much more complicated and positive, if fantastic, set of expertise. I fully bought it by the end of the novel, which is great.

If it wasn't for the aspects of the writing that kept knocking me right out of my imagination, for all the times I discovered that I wished that I was doing just about anything else but reading, (which is freaking odd, for me,) or for the plain fact that the pacing was constantly in mortal jeopardy, I really would have given this book a five star rating. There's a ton to love, but the exposition WAS NOT IT.

(Even if what I'm calling exposition actually had a self-contained story or stories within it, that actually wrapped up like out-of-time tales, I'll be honest... they just didn't belong here. Maybe somewhere else as side short-stories for die-hard fans, or extras at the end of the novel. I know this is just my opinion, but cutting them right out of the main story would have made the book superior, if not quite as deep. We're not dealing with victorian classics, here. This has all the trappings of a modern UF save the crown secret organization of superheroes joining forces with masters of extreme and esoteric biology sciences, NOT an in-depth exploration of the histories of rather minor character parts that happen to have important but not large page-time.)

*sigh*

But again, I think the story was damn awesome if we got away from all that. :)

Hobart :( had high hopes for this one

Bradley If you don't mind long flashback-like scenes cutting up the main action, then go for it. The core story is worth it.

message 3: by Hobart (new)

Hobart will bear that in mind. Will go for it anyway -- it's sitting on my shelf, not-so-patiently waiting

Alexandra I hear ya. Reading it now. Like it ok, but so far not as much as the first one which was awesome. This one is a bit draggy in spots.

Suzanne I've been thinking the same thing - I love the core story but wow a lot of exposition/history in between!

MB (What she read) I agree. I am reading this a chapter at a time--separated by breaks. It's good but a very choppy read.

Bradley Edit! Edit! :) Let's hear it for free, online stories to supplement novels! :) I'd then have been happy as hell. Kinda like the Curran PoV wasn't put directly into the Kate Daniels novels, I'd only feel insanely pleased by the bonus, instead of annoyed with the interruption. :) *sigh*

Helen I liked it ;)

Bradley Oh, I did too, after a while. ;)

Scorkpr Allen Brad, I had the same reaction. I keep wondering if O'Malley's world just got away from him and required all this exposition, or if we're being set up for more sequels? For example...the metal woman at the end and the idea of the Checquey having to "do something" about those with powers who are never identified and channeled into service...

Bradley Well I think you've hit the nail on the head, obviously, and I tend to be perfectly fine with a certain amount of exposition. It's a nice break from having to work at a text. :) BUT too much is too much and if it doesn't serve the current tale, then it belongs in a different tale. :)

Scorkpr Allen I agree with you. There was simply too much exposition, and I found that the intervals of action became a bit predictable after awhile. The text felt a bit like the writer was struggling to fit too much into this sequel.

Bradley Yup!

Dee Ha!!! I just reviewed it and I pretty much felt the same - he could have done without all of the background history bits! Otherwise, it is a great story. He is still so imaginative with all of the different powers he has to create for the books. I wish the editors had said something... maybe he should get us to read the drafts. :)

Bradley Yes, indeed!

Janet Martin There was a lot of history included in this episode, but I actually enjoyed it and found that it added to my overall experience

Kristen I am SO GLAD that I am not the only one having this experience! I'm at chapter 18 and your review is EXACTLY the way I feel. I keep thinking: "GEEZ! Do we HAVE to have PAGES AND PAGES of the history stuff??!! Couldn't we just make brief mentions with what we really NEED to know to understand what/why things are happening the way they are??!!

Bradley Lol yeah! or push it off into a side novella or something, at the very least! More Story! Or push aside all of the Checquy and stick entirely to the other side! :) lol

Yeah, I'm still annoyed at how that turned out. lol

Carolyn Great review. I agree on all the extra stuff. I'd even go so far as to say that some of the action scenes could have been taken out. For instance, the scene where they are called to the church seemed like it was put in just to ramp things up a bit. It didn't feel like it fit with the rest of the storyline at all. I liked the book, and I loved how he expanded on the Grafters to make them believable and justifiable. But I also felt like a lot of my affection for the book was tied directly to my loyalty to Myfanwy and the original story.

Bradley Well, you're not alone, there. I thought the strength was in the original character we'd gotten to know and love, not the richness of the world-building. (And I'm not saying that all the history and expansion wasn't great, because it was.) :)

Josie Felt the same

Marcella Agree totally - hoping book 3 will be less of that and more of book one's awesomeness

Bradley Here's to hoping! :)

Shea This perfectly puts into words what I was trying to get across in my crappy review. Thank you!

Bradley LOL

Dee I just re-read the Rook and Stiletto and I have to say that Stiletto was much, much better this time around. I found it very funny and because I knew what he was trying to do with the grafters, it was easier to immerse myself this time.
I am stoked he is writing the third book.

Bradley Truly? You don't mind the swap of concerns and characters on a re-read?

message 29: by Alexandra (new) - added it

Alexandra I loved Rook, I DNF this one. Just wasn't the same, for me.

message 30: by Dee (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dee I know, right? But I did enjoy it so much more. I read them back to back, so I think that made a difference. 😁

message 31: by Peter (new) - added it

Peter Conway I felt the first one did exactly the same thing. Interesting story, but constantly being interrupted.

Bradley Alas! Pacing issues. ; ;

message 33: by Ted (new) - rated it 3 stars

Ted So true -- this is exactly my reaction (upon reaching page 142)!

Bradley Alas!

Paula Agree with Diana, what read back to back. It's not perfectly constructed but I like his exposition. Too much modern storytelling is like an action film.
