THE WORST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ.
The writing is stilted, the story is dull, it doesn't make sense. The main character is a complete waste of space - I didn't like him at all, and was glad when bad things happened to him. There is no explanation for anything, and things happen for no reason at all; nothing is ever explained, or acknowledged. Things just happen, and are put across in this terrible attempt-funny style of writing that's just disjointed and lazy. Not to mention that the protag's condition and continual sympathy-seeking is shocking. OK, we get it, your mum's an exotic dancer, you live in a run-down house, you're some child prodigy scholarship kid, yet you talk like an idiot and don't have a grain of intelligence or sympathy. We don't need to hear, every second line, that you're poor and you've never had this much before - we don't need to hear constantly that you're hard done by, and then see you sabotage EVERYTHING your mother has worked for so you can feel like a tough guy. You are a lame, lame character. You have no admirable traits.
Phew.
Glad I got that off my chest. Do not read this book. It is a waste of time and brain cells. I'm surprised Kenyon even managed to get it published.

RAIN have you read anything else by Sherrilyn Kenyon?

river I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

From what I've read you need to have read the "dark hunter" series in order to really "get it". Which it pretty stupid considering it was written for different audience. I am about 2/3s of the way through this novel and not impressed. Mostly because, like you said, it doesn't make a ton of sense.

river the writing is so choppy!!

Julie I completely agree. NOTHING made sense, and there were like 20 characters!!!! I hated this book! Never judge a book by it's cover because this one had an awesome cover but seriously was soooooooooooo terrible! Never read!

river that's how i felt too!!! I saw the cover and i was just in awe. Then you go to read it and it's so. bad. How is she a New York Times bestselling author??

Becca I just referred to your post in my review. You summed it up perfectly.

message 8: by Meg (new) - rated it 1 star

Meg Totally agree!

Ella McReynolds Okay, first of all, he wouldn't be a scholarship student if he wasn't smart or intelligent. If you read the second one, you would know that he got a 100 on his exam to get into St. Peters High School, plus he aced all of the bonus questions. Please tell me if you don't think that's smart because I do and I'm not some person who thinks everyone else is smart. I'm the smartest person in my class and get all A's. Also, I bet you have never read a book you even so much as like. Why don't you read something like Divergent or Percy Jackson if you haven't already and hate it too.

Georgia Hi Ella! I wrote this review a few years ago so I'm afraid I don't remember much about it. It's very possible to be smart at school but not be a smart person. I don't think he made choices that were intelligent. For the record, I love Percy Jackson (I thought he was smart, even though he wasn't a scholarship student) but couldn't get behind Divergent. Hope you have a good day and happy reading :)

Jessi I have to disagree, this character was funny and relatable (as a "scholarship kid" myself). I really feel that, to a computer/gaming/zombie nerd such as I, Nick was great and quite hillarious. I agree that he did some stupid things to his mother, but it all came down to the fact that he was internally battling his evil nature throughout the book. I thought that the author created an amazing set of characters(as I agree that there was a lot of them) and I'm excited for more. I will say, the one thing that was a little off putting, was Nicks age. Every time that it was mentioned that he was only 14 I kind of gagged, but that could have been on purpose.

Samantha I listened to the audio version of this book and absolutely LOVED IT! I also love Percy Jackson but couldn't get into divergent because the main character made me extremely angry. I read this series before I read the dark hunter series and I could see where all the characters could get confusing. After reading the dark hunter series I am re-listening to the chronicles of Nick and am enjoying it more the 2nd time around! I think the audio version of this book adds a lot to the main character and makes the book even better!

message 14: by Katelyn (new)

Katelyn There is a difference between academic intelligence and common sense. It's not that Nick is lacking common sense but rather he has a big mouth that tends to get away with him sometimes. Furthermore the Chronicles of Nick is easier to understand if you've read the Dark Hunter books. But regardless of that she's an internationally best selling author because she has other books that are much much better than this one. Once you have the label of internationally best selling author you can pretty much stick it on all your newest series as advertising propaganda. I love the Chronicles of Nick, because it starts off meh, but it gets better and better each book. I think if you look at the ratings you'll notice each book has a higher rating than the last.

Fiondra disagree

Darius Green I am sorry but anyone who honestly thinks this book sucks is a complete idiot.

Emmie Eklund I, for instance, LOVED this series! I read very fast, and I also started off with book number six, so I got stuck. Let me just tell you all this; because of my starting with the wrong book, I kind of loved it from the beginning, but I can agree with you on the fact that you don't understand from the start. I think that this is done on purpose, 'cause the more of these books you read, the more you understand. And you also want to know why something happened, so you keep on reading. Since Nick is very ironical, as a protection against his situation, and the book is written from his perspective, it itself is also kind of ironic in the way of writing.
To all of you who hasn't read the book; don't hesitate, it grows on you.
Thanks!

Emmie Eklund Oh, and also, Nick gets older in every book, so he kind of grows into himself. And if he's young, what was HP?! He was friggin' ELEVEN!!! But yeah, he's still young...

amina I thought this book was pretty funny. I get that there is a lot of unexplained stuff, but that's because she explains it in the next book. As for the things that happen for no reason? Well it's the same as I said before it leads to other events. Personally, I thought it was really funny. Expecially Nick and Caleb. I should seriously give this series another try, tho. Try enjoying the funnier parts next time.

Murrayolistudents.Dsbn.Org u have your opinion and we have ours
just saying u have good points and also it did get kind of boring in between the action or at least when he wasn't dying
but other than that it was really good and I agree that u should give it another try ;-)

Bonnie Tatum While i completely agree with you it is kinda hard to follow at the beginning it gets easier as time goes on. Once you get into the book it makes it impossible to put down

message 27: by Jadelyn (new)

Jadelyn thank you! I wanted to read this but then I read your comment and it saved me from a book that would just waste my time, thanks :)

message 28: by Zurikhamisi (new)

Zurikhamisi I'm listening to this book and I totally agree with you. the character is annoying. He's constantly questioning everything and being a skeptic regardless of everything that he's witnessing. I can't go any further in this book. It's not funny and its totally repetitive and irritating. I'll try another series.

message 29: by Wolfgarr (new)

Wolfgarr i thank you for the warning.. just have to say something though. The author was able to get a emotional response from you. Sure it was negative.. But maybe that is what he wanted.. Who knows. Will be avoiding this book like the plague myself. i can't stand idiot Main Characters.

message 30: by ellie (new) - added it

ellie Well, I haven't really read the book so I don't have an opinion yet. Except, maybe none of it made sense because it is a spinoff and you have to read the Dark Hunters series? But even as a spinoff, I still think that everything needs to be explained so I don't know.

message 31: by Karma (new)

Karma Read ALL the other books. Then you might get it. (It being the whole Nick series) mainly the dark hunter books. Not her other books that aren't related to the lovely, facinating, and very intracite dark hunter world. If you look at the bigger picture, you might find it pretty cool.

message 32: by John (new) - added it

John Belosic Read the next few books then you will understand how the story goes. And I do agree with you the first book did suck but after book 2 I fell in love with the series bc book one is always getting everything set up.

message 33: by muddy (new) - rated it 1 star

muddy i really hated reading this book and this review just about sums up why, i think it's a great book if you're in the fifth grade but other than that nope nope nope

message 34: by Jess (new)

Jess I'm twenty minutes in on the audiobook and so far you have aptly summarized the book. I've been debating continuing it as it's just so far fetched. Kenyon can't remotely write what 9th grader dialogue would be. I was cringing in embarrassment for her.

Justin Jenkins I would have to disagree with you. I mean I am not a true Dark-Hunters fan, but as a book this book was pretty good. It had a great plot that was easy to understand if you actually think instead relying on the author to write it before you. It showed good emotion and trials that should only be in movies, but that is what made this book so great. It put a struggling boy into a new world making him a hero, but also made him like a normal person instead of making him to great. He still hurt, hated, and loved like a normal person which is great character development.

message 36: by NE (new) - rated it 5 stars

NE I love ❤️ The Dark Hunter Series, The Chronicles of Nick is an off shoot. With that said, I'm perfectly happy with the series so far. I like the "back story" to the 20 some odd books SK has written so far. You've to see the entire picture, the entire DH world to appreciate Nick and the toned down writing.

Samantha DesForges Definitely not for anyone who isn't a fan of the Dark-hunter novels. If you haven't already read the Dark-hunter I wouldn't try to read this book! I love Nick so I have been excited to finally get to read the series.

message 38: by Ali (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ali I just started it and love it

Caleb Just because people have liked this book and given it good ratings does not mean they are idiots or of a lower IQ. People who suggest this should rethink their opinions and definitely think before they open their mouths. Liking something, no matter how stupid it may seem to others, does not make you an idiot. Thanks.

Sheryl Cruzan I agree its not good. Have enjoyed alot of her books. She can make the unbelievable believable. I found myself rolling my eyes! Waste of my money. Snd I won’t b wasting anymore on this series. !

message 41: by Matt (new) - rated it 5 stars

Matt Wrong wrong wrong wrong! Great book you are just wrong!

message 42: by Jon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jon If you read the book you would know hes actualy not looking for sympathy or hand outs and he only said how he never had this much before at the guy's huge mansion.

Hlezi Sy I liked the book and I haven’t yet read the dark hunter series. I listened to an audio version and really liked the characters.

message 46: by Tamika (new) - added it

Tamika I think it would be less confusing if you had read the dark hunter series before this one.

message 47: by Mari (new) - added it

Mari Agree with Tamika. The story makes sense if you read Dark Hunter books.
