Review
My review following a re-reading is here:
http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
I originally rated the novel as four stars on the basis of my first reading.
Earlier Place Holder
This novel inspired Mick Jagger to write "Sympathy for the Devil" from the album "Beggars Banquet".
Jagger's lyrics adopt the character of the Satanic Professor Woland.
My recollection of the novel is that its tone is much more diverse, almost magic realist in parts.

They were produced by Jimmy Miller, who also produced Primal Scream's "Screamadelica".

It is peak era Stones for me.
From memory, I had to get it down to 80 minutes (to get it on a disc) and I think I had to omit one song (can't remember which one).
I'm keen to re-read this novel as well.

Reading the book made me so happy and so excited about reading for many years thereafter. I still smile at my teenage excitement reading this book. It's truly a spectacular piece of writing.

I made an 80 minute compilation of those two albums once and had to drop off a few of the weaker songs. Mind you, the rest of the comp was bliss.

BTW, the Ginsburg translation is really beautifully written. It's a shame it's based on the censored version -- 12% or so removed.

Yes, will do. I think I am going to do a comparison of translations under Ginsburg, but it will take me a while to get that up and ready.
I can't sleep. :(
