Samantha I haven't read this, but I read some samples and a lot of reviews and it seems to be poetry for people who don't like poetry and who have a lot of feelings about relationships.

I don't have any feelings about relationships. I liked the bits about feminism and body positivity though.

Ty Brown Read it out loud. I wasn't getting the full impact until I read every single poem out loud. Some of them I read over and over again.

message 4: by Kim (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kim I liked this book much more than you did, but regardless I love this review.

message 5: by Alysia (new)

Alysia HAHAHHAA I LOVE YOUR REVIEW

Roxie OH MY GOD HOW CAN YOU NOT GET FREE VERSE????!! Jk, this review was the best :D

Jack Blashchishen yes, you got it perfectly.

Paula Nuguid I think you're just too white for her poetry to resonate with you

Sheri lol

Charlee Remitz I agree. These poems were more like statements. Some resonated, some didn't. That's not a fault of your skin color, it's a fault of life, I can only relate to what I know intimately.

message 11: by Ayesha (new)

Ayesha Omg, that cracked my up! Amazing review. I read some of the quotes and your review sums them up perfectly. But I guess most poetry is like that nowadays

message 12: by Ayesha (new)

Ayesha me*

message 13: by Lyssa (new) - rated it 1 star

Lyssa Paula are you really trying to say rape can only happen to other non whites? I know your not but it's disgusting either way just like your personality

message 14: by Kyle (new) - rated it 2 stars

Kyle MacDonald This is how I feel about this book as I'm trying to read it right now! It doesn't feel like poetry at points, just randomly scattered statements ripped straight from Tumblr. I....I mean I am enjoying some parts, but when it jumps to three line pages about that screams "Super cheesy cliche sentences about a man or love" I just start drifting. Ugh. I'll finish it. I'll try.

Olivia I DO get poetry but your review still made me LOL

Olivia Re: Paula's comment
Someone always has to make it about race

Megan Mills Poetry is just as much about the words as it is the form of the poem. The lines are meant to stand alone as well as stand in the poem as a whole. She chose to break the lines where they do to convey the meaning of the poem more clearly.

Laura This is exactly how i felt about thr book...

message 19: by Tala (new) - rated it 5 stars

Allison i am

jess ~has abandoned GR~ I haven't started this book yet, but I love this review. Modern poetry is so hit or miss these days -- a lot of times it's just prose interspersed with random line breaks.

Missy MacDonald or maybe it's just not very good

message 27: by Soren (new) - rated it 1 star

Soren SERIOUSLY

Bridget It's called free verse, but nevertheless I like your review.

Tonya this is just modern "poetry", you may need to come back to the roots and read some poetry classics.

Michelle I have to agree with you on this. Although they call this "modern" poetry and many, MANY do these it's kind of annoying if doesn't for the story they try to tell.

message 31: by poisona (new)

poisona I like this format of modern poetry and think it can be done well, while this book is not the case.

Marion Although many of the poems are quite short, several of her poems seriously touched me. She reminds me of early Rod McKuen in the 1970's. It's awesome when any poet hits bestseller status and brings poetry to the masses. The world needs more poetry, short or otherwise!

message 33: by Sarah (new) - rated it 1 star

Sarah Omg this review is exactly how I feel about this book!

message 34: by Sarah (new) - rated it 1 star

Sarah Omg this review is exactly how I feel about this book!

message 35: by Izah (new) - rated it 1 star

Izah Ahmad What the heckk hahahha this is soo on point

message 36: by Sarai (new)

Sarai I'm in a poetry class and we actually discussed the necessity of purposefulness in line breaks. Arbitrary line breaks mean nothing except to signify 'look I wrote a poem'. To me, most poems that I've read by Rupi Kaur so indeed read like the enter button was hit when it just felt right, instead of being truly purposeful.

message 37: by Isabella (new)

Isabella Exactly my thoughts. If people consider this poetry, I don't know what we have come to.

Denisa Axhami I love poetry, but I was extremely disconnected to this book.

message 39: by Sofie (new)

Sofie i was thinking the same thing looool

message 40: by DesireeT (new)

DesireeT Love this review.

joie de livre Exactly.

Crystal Bearr Yep! This book hurt my brain. I just don't get it.

Crystal Bearr Paula, that's a really prejudiced thing to say. Many of us white girls were raped and molested. The book was stupid, had nothing to do with color. And you're part of the problem.

yiwern69 yes! u got it right. 🤣

زكرياء NO !! here there no metaphors or poetic way to describe things.

message 46: by Cyang (last edited Jun 04, 2018 06:40PM) (new) - rated it 1 star

Cyang Paula wrote: "I think you're just too white for her poetry to resonate with you"
I'm asian and immigrated from the east but I didn't like it one bit. Being white doesn't equal being tasteless and saying such a thing goes against Rupi Kaur's motion towards unity does it not?

Sarah Geno bahahha lol!

message 48: by Regina (new)

Regina Ibrahim i would love to read intimately Rupi's work. all these while i been browsing only on the net.

Somantika Nothing could describe how I felt about this book better than your review. Perfect!
