Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood

4 high stars. I had no idea who comedian Trevor Noah was, but there were enough rave reviews about his book Born a Crime to make me curious. I'm so glad I read it. Noah was born in South Africa just before the end of Apartheid. His mother is black and his father was white, and given the times in which he was born, he was literally "born a crime" as a mixed race kid. His book focuses on his early years growing up in South Africa. I'm not sure I can do justice to what makes this book so excellent. While Noah makes the underlying politics clear and doesn't downplay their impact, there's a lot of humour in his book. His life story could be dramatic, but it's oddly positive. He portrays contemporary South Africa as complex and difficult, but he does a great job celebrating the survival skills his mother gave him and the way in which he learned to navigate the complex situation he was born into. Perhaps more than anything, this is an ode to his mother. She is strong, fearless and unconventional, and she seems to have passed these traits on to Noah. There are some difficult scenes -- especially at the end in the chapter focusing on Noah's mother and stepfather. But mostly Noah tells his life stories with good humour, although without sugar coating. There are so many great anecdotes and stories of his early years. And the writing just flows. Lovely book. I would be happy to keep reading about Noah's life. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an opportunity to read an advance copy.

Thanks Julie. I thought this was great. Now I have to get to know Trevor Noah the comedian.

Thanks Jen. Even if you don't typically
read non fiction, I highly recommend this one.

Since Jon Stewart left, I no longer watch "The Daily Show" regularly but Noah is very smart & funny (my kids love him!)
I might try listening on audio later on, thank you for this nice summary :)

Thanks Iris. My guess is that the audio is fantastic. If your sons are readers, they might like the book too. He has a lot of personality

Thanks Bianca. It's definitely worth reading. It's a fast read.

I just came looking for your review after reading Margitte's and saw you read it too...

Cesar, my oldest is a history buff, in between school work he's now immerse in Ron Chernow's Alexander Hamilton. Actually my whole family seem to have caught the Hamilton fever these days, Christian the youngest is totally mesmerized by the play's soundtrack.
I think Christian is too young (13) for this one, but Cesar (20) will probably enjoy it.
Just got the audiobook, as you mentioned to Elyse earlier, I am also hearing lots of praise for Noah's memoir and his narration.

I love that your kids are into Hamilton. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on the audio. I might listen to it at some point.

Thanks Taryn. I'm pretty sure that it's your review that prompted me to get a copy from Netgalley. I've now ordered a copy for my 18 year old son for Christmas, although I can't claim to be anything like Noah's extraordinary mother :)

Thanks Jennifer. This is definitely going to be one of my favourites this year. I'm not sure why I didn't just give it 5 stars.
